From my hazy memory, I know that modern day Tunisia was the site of the ancient civilisation of Carthage. It was a relatively small collection of cities, but Carthage almost changed world history when Hannibal led the Carthaginian army around the Mediterranean through (modern day) Spain and France, over the Alps, down through (modern day) Italy and almost to the gates of Rome. They laid waste to every Roman army they met along the way, and won some epic battles, but gradual attrition meant they were unable to reach Rome itself. Some years later, after reforming their armies, Rome exacted one of history’s greatest (ie. most horrible) acts of revenge by capturing Carthage and massacring its entire population. They then proceeded to burn and pull down every building, tear up the foundations and destroy all artefacts and writing in an effort to totally erase the civilisation from the face of the Earth and from history. Thus, we know very little about Carthage compared to other civilisations of the era. Carthage was eventually re-built by the Romans but was destroyed again during the Muslim conquest of the region after the fall of the Roman Empire.
I don't think I've ever thought about Tunisia. I've learned about Carthage. That's about it. Maybe you could share what you know to further the discussion Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
I first heard of Tunisia when I learned Star Wars was shot there. Then I met Tunisians in Saudi Arabia and learned about their food and culture a little bit [they seemed very french to me]. I later heard about the Punic wars and when I looked at the map I realised Carthage was in Tunis. Its a very ancient and historically rich country.

you kicked the italians' asses, at some point you didn't allow people to pray in mosques unless with special cards, your government opposes the hijab, you're a bit more liberal than your neighbours, your country's landscape is nice, your infrastructure education and business wise is also better than your neighbours, you're a bit infested with European tourists, and you've got some very bright scientific minds there which you export all over the world.. you're also a bit less hot-headed than your close north african cousins..
. that's not truuee!! i went a few times to the mosuqe, during ramadhan, no cards are needed!!!! also, the hijab that cover all the face, like in saudi arabia is not liked or encouraged by goverment, that's why women don't wear that kind of hijab
