A long time ago i was watching a link to a video from a t.v show. the show had a well dressed, well paid host and the audience was laughing at the clips of people saying stupid things and the usual gratuitous BS people get off on.

But then as the camera panned the audience you could see they was average, some would call them simple people dressed in cheap clothes, bad haircuts and whatever. But the first thing that entered my mind was...'they are making fun of you only your too stupid to realize it'

Well, it was entertainment and singling out a specific group to make fun of is sometimes acceptable but i was just surprised that no in the audience recognized themselves and really though they were different...i found that to be somewhat perplexing.

There are virtually no rednecks left in USA. Originally, calling somebody a redneck implied certain measure of self-sufficiency and independence of that person from the "sophisticated" civilization and its ways. Modern "rednecks" are nothing like that, they are hooked on mass produced trailers, trucks, TVs, foods, NASCAR, sports, entertainment. They are true byproducts of modernity and free market mass economy, they are not rednecks.
* * * * NOTE FROM THE LINGUISTICS MODERATOR * * * *

The consensus of definitions of the word "redneck" is a person who has many or most of the following characteristics:
  • An American from the original eleven Confederate States or the Border States (Maryland, Kentucky and Missouri, the three slave states that remained in the Union, but generally extended to West Virginia, which seceded from Virginia in order to remain in the Union, and Oklahoma, which didn't exist at the time of the Civil War)
  • Northwestern European descent
  • Provincial
  • Poor
  • Uneducated
  • Unsophisticated
  • Agricultural worker
  • Politically conservative or even reactionary
  • Christian fundamentalist
  • Racist bigot
There are certainly people who qualify as rednecks in many Northern states and even in foreign countries, but a "redneck State" has to be one of the fifty United States and "the most redneck state" has to have both a majority of rednecks in its population and manifest a strong redneck culture. Suggesting Maine (one of the very few states whose people are entitled to be called "Yankees"), Illinois (the state that proclaims itself the "Land of Lincoln" on its license plate), or Montana (a Libertarian Party stronghold) is ridiculous, no matter how many rednecks you've run into there. And to suggest Alberta or Southwest Australia is to be unclear on the concept.

And Dixon is wrong: there are still plenty of them in the USA. Of course they're not the same as they were 150 years ago, but who is? These days the real rednecks self-identify, and the dictionary caveat that the word is considered offensive is a little out of date. Gretchen Wilson proudly proclaims herself a "Redneck Woman" in her hit song. Perhaps it's similar to the N-word; people can only use it on themselves.

I understand some of those states may be pretty redneck. but the list begins and ends with the deep south. georgia, alabama and mississippi.

that's what I would have thought as well.
What US state had the most lynchings? What state was the last to make black/white marriage legal?

There are virtually no rednecks left in USA.

...and there is always West Virginia. What is surprizingly not even a choice in the poll.

Let's throw in a little science:

"Possible American etymologies

Another possible contributing source of the term redneck comes from The West Virginia Coal Miners March or the Battle of Blair Mountain when coal miners wore red bandanas around their necks to identify themselves as seeking the opportunity to unionize."

There is the sort of OK redneck, a genuinely American type from the pioneer Presbyterian Scots-Irish stock, a people who came by their lack of culture naturally - their Celtic heritage had been ground out of them by English oppression and generations of extreme poverty, and nothing replaced it but what they invented in the New World. But there is another connotation sometimes, a reference to a type of willfully ignorant person who does not take a joke well, a yokel with a mean streak. The State I've been in with the most mean rural people was Ohio.

I would simplify this to "the Deep South and Appalachia," which have always been - hands down - the heartlands of redneckdom. No state in the west can ever hope to compete with those areas. 80% of the population of Nevada lives in the Las Vegas metro area, for example, which is not exactly my idea of "redneck."

Texas might be in the running for taking the most pride in being redneck (and just about anything else), but I think the actual demographics of the state reveal serious weaknesses in their claim to redneckdom: the research universities, the high-tech and aerospace industries, the thriving music scenes... shit, Austin is right up there with Boulder and Madison on the list of places for hip 20-somethings to go for grad school.

But really, I think of Texas (and believe that Texas thinks of itself) as more cowboy than redneck. Which is a very different matter.

You missed it. It's Michigan we're the only state that has a bowling alley with valet parking.....If you think I am kidding head the Traverse City and go to the Comedy Club ti's right there.

Montana,? Virginia? Maine? Kentucky? Nevada? Texas????????? HAHAHAHAHA

Take it from someone who lives in Nashville Tennessee - those places are too affluent and modern to be called redneck. You want to find REAL rednecks (compliant with all of Fraggle rocker's list), you gotta chose either one of three states:

Alabama
Mississippi
Arkansas

Visit either of these three states, and you'll meet uneducated hicks that put Jeff Foxworthy's jokes to shame.
Admittedly, Tennessee has its own massive amount of rednecks too......for example, Pulaski Tennessee was the birthplace of the KKK.

A brief word on Kentucky (don't mean to get preachy but c'mon, we gotta get something straight!).

Domesticated's right, my family moved to Kentucky a while back, and I didn't let up on the jokes one bit at first, but you'd be kind of amazed. I mean, you're talking about the state that hosts the Kentucky Derby, there are some looooaaaadddeeedddd people around there, specifically Lexington and Louisville. My family's discovered a neat byproduct of this: an unexpectedly rich arts culture in Louisville, with a full opera house and everything.

Now, when I had a summer job down there a while back (Walmart, night shift, weird shit went down man... lol), I was in a little crap town in central Kentucky that is home to more strip clubs then pickup trucks, and that's sayin alot down there (it appears the government standard-issues you an F-150 when you turn 16...). The folks there say it's the ones in the hills over in East Kentucky that you gotta watch out for.

The advice I got for that area: "If you're driving through there with a black friend, best leave him in the car at the gas stops, for his sake. Those people think people from THIS shit town are city-slickers!"

Ok, you know what, maybe Kentucky does belong on the list after all! :D

australia

why do you say australia? crocodile dundee? not that we dont have a surplus of bogans and westies. i guess the dinky di aussie culture so many people embrace is pretty redneck. drinkin beer, drivin utes and racism. shit we are rednecks. bugger.

Louisiana without a doubt... I hate this place... you can also have the the 6 months of humidity/mugginess... the stupid drivers.. the fire ant mounds and the ugly, swampy, spooky landscape. What an UGLY place, both the land AND it's people and thier attitude... Let me also mention this state is consistently voted the "most unhealthiest" state to live,(both physically and pscyhologically)... what a dump!!! I can't believe its not even on the poll.

Texas is a hopeless, irretrievable shithole. They also have the most Iraqi war supporters than anywhere else in the country.

Let's hope they do decide to secede. Then maybe we can invade them and steal their oil too.
