Louisiana without a doubt... I hate this place... you can also have the the 6 months of humidity/mugginess... the stupid drivers.. the fire ant mounds and the ugly, swampy, spooky landscape. What an UGLY place, both the land AND it's people and thier attitude... Let me also mention this state is consistently voted the "most unhealthiest" state to live,(both physically and pscyhologically)... what a dump!!! I can't believe its not even on the poll.

its not a redneck state. I agree its a dump but not a state. :D

I've been to all states on the list except Montana. And Texas is by far NOT the most redneck. I think the majority of people who voted for Texas have never actually been to Texas

Texas is a hopeless, irretrievable shithole. They also have the most Iraqi war supporters than anywhere else in the country.

Let's hope they do decide to secede. Then maybe we can invade them and steal their oil too.

stfu, I live in Texas.

We have the largest tech industry, if we were our own country we would produce around 6300 megawatts of power, most of that from the super massive wind farms we have, some have blades that are 800 feet long, and I mean the actual spinning blades, imagine how tall they are. If we were our own country we would be ranked 6th place in the world in the amount of energy produced by wind power.

UT is one of the top schools in the country.

Practically every major tech industry has a base here, there is literally a large AMD facility half a mile from my school.

Houston is the third largest city in the US I believe, and is about to overtake Chicago.

Do you honestly think we wanted to get into this assinine war with the Iraqis?

In Austin Texas we are the 2nd healthiest city in the US.

I would agree. I live in Texas, and have been to a lot more redneck places than the Lone Star State.

Hi, I live in New York. The most populous city in the country is here. It's called New York City. The second largest is Los Angeles, California, followed by Chicago, Illinois. Don't be worry, I'm sure you guys will catch up with the big boys some day. Also, the leading high tech export state is California, not Texas.

You forgot to mention that Texas is also the fattest state in the USA, officially speaking. I REPEAT: Texas is, per capita, home to the most fat slobs and slobettes in the entire country. Way to go. There's a real source of pride for ya.

Hahahahah.

I guess they don't have google in NYC:

The top 10 fattest states in America are:

Mississippi (32% of adults are obese)
Alabama (30.3%)
Tennessee (30.1%)
Louisiana (29.8%)
West Virginia (29.5%)
Arkansas (28.7%)
South Carolina (28.4%)
Georgia (28.2%)
Oklahoma (28.1%)
Texas (28.1%)

You're right... my info is dated. Texas is number 10 in that department and now instead, Texas has most of the fattest cities in the country, which might be somewhat better than flat-out having the most fat people in the country, as they did several years ago or so, when I last looked it up.

The point is still very clear: Texas is home to a disproportionate amount of gross, self-serving fatbodies.

And yet I live in the second healthiest city.

We have more fortune five hundred companies than any state.

With a growing base of industry, the state is a leader in many, including agriculture, petrochemicals, energy, computers and electronics, aerospace, and biomedical sciences. It leads the nation in export revenue and has the second-highest gross state product.

The state has the most cities with populations exceeding 1,000,000: Houston, San Antonio and Dallas.[118] These three rank among the 10 most populous cities of the United States. As of 2000, six Texas cities had populations greater than 500,000. Austin, Fort Worth, and El Paso are among the 25 largest U.S. cities

Texas has four metropolitan areas with populations greater than 1,000,000: Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio and Austin-Round Rock

We also are home to two global cities

Texas's economy is the third largest in the world of country subdivisions behind California and Tokyo Prefecture.

In 2004, Site Selection Magazine ranked Texas as the most business friendly state in the nation in part because of the state's three-billion-dollar Texas Enterprise Fund.[143] The state holds the most Fortune 500 company headquarters in the United States

The state is a leader in renewable energy sources; it produces the most wind power in the nation.[148][150] The Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center in Taylor and Nolan County, Texas, is the world's largest wind farm as of November 2008 with a 735.5 megawatt (MW) capacity.[151] The Energy Information Administration states that the state's large agriculture and forestry industries could give Texas an enormous amount biomass for use in biofuels. The state also has the highest solar power potential for development in the nation.[148]

With large universities systems coupled with initiatives like the Texas Enterprise Fund and the Texas Emerging Technology Fund, a wide array of different high tech industries have developed in Texas. The Austin area is nicknamed the "Silicon Hills" and the north Dallas area the "Silicon Prairie". Texas has the headquarters of many high technology companies, such as Dell, Inc., Texas Instruments, Perot Systems, AT&T and Electronic Data Systems (EDS).

Electronic Data Systems headquarters in PlanoThe National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center (NASA JSC) located in Southeast Houston, sits as the crown jewel of Texas's aeronautics industry. Fort Worth hosts both Lockheed Martin's Aeronautics division and Bell Helicopter Textron.[152][153] Lockheed builds the F-16 Fighting Falcon, the largest Western fighter program, and its successor, the F-35 Lightning II in Fort Worth.[

Texas has compensated by building both America's largest highway and railway systems in terms of mileage, as well as the largest number of airports.[158] The regulatory authority, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) maintains the state's immense highway system, regulates aviation,[159] and public transportation systems.[160] Located in centrally in North America, the state is an important transportation hub. From the Dallas/Fort Worth area, trucks can reach 93% of the nation's population within 48 hours, and 37% within 24 hours.[161] Texas has 33 foreign trade zones (FTZ), the most in the nation.[162] In 2004, a combined total of $298 billion of goods passed though Texas FTZs.[162]

Texas has the most airports of any state in the nation.[158] Largest of these is Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), the second largest in the United States, and fourth in the world.[167] In traffic, DFW is the busiest in the state, fourth in the United States,[168] and sixth worldwide.[169] AMR Corporation's American / American Eagle, the world's largest airline in total passengers-miles transported[170] and passenger fleet size,[171] uses DFW as its largest and main hub. Southwest Airlines, also headquartered in Dallas, began its operations at Dallas Love Field.[172] It ranks as the largest airline in the United States by number of passengers carried domestically per year and the largest airline in the world by number of passengers carried.[173]

Texas's second-largest air facility is Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). It serves as Houston based Continental Airlines's largest hub. IAH offers service to the most Mexican destinations of any U.S. airport.[174][175]

The Port of Houston today is the busiest port in the United States in foreign tonnage, second in overall tonnage, and tenth worldwide in tonnage.[178] The Houston Ship Channel currently spans 530 feet (160 m) wide by 45 feet (14 m) deep by 50 miles (80 km) long.[179]

It wasn't always a derogatory term (like many current slurs), in fact among some Canadian farmers it still retains it's original meaning:

A guy that works his ass off, farming in the field everyday, growing food/livestock. (For himself and ungrateful civilization).

Fedr, if you wiki *any* state, you'll find some list of esoteric accolades used by statist enthusiasts who want to grandstand.

I can't help but notice you having an irrational need to defend your horrible, hick state of Texas. Do you identify strongly with your state or something? Do you view an attack upon the hick state of Texas as an attack upon your personal values?

You aren't alone. Norsefire felt that way about the hick state of Texas too.

It's a derogatory term for certain white people.
I don't see a whole lot of people that have a problem with it though.

This is what dictionary.com says:

red⋅neck
/ˈrɛdˌnɛk/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [red-nek] Show IPA Informal: Often Disparaging.
–noun
1. an uneducated white farm laborer, esp. from the South.
2. a bigot or reactionary, esp. from the rural working class.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/redneck

Anyhow, you would have a good point if the word was used as a personal insult. I'll allow its general use.

Once upon a time, a lot of people didn't have a problem with the word "nigger". Does that mean a thread with "nigger" in the title is okay as long as it wasn't used as a personal insult?
