Does the possibility that life has no meaning, bother you?

Concur.
The link-to-post feature does not work.
If anyone wishes to reference a past link, they should do so by explicitly pasting the link.
Vociferous did post a link to my quote

Problem is the poster he directed his reply to I suspect is on my Iggy list so any inquiry directed to me from someone on my Iggy list is not going to reach me

Dead end

:)

Works fine for me. Both posting and clicking them in others' posts.
Interesting. Do you have anyone on Ignore?

The up-arrow feature seemed to stop working for me about the time I first put someone on Ignore - even though it seems to be broken in all cases. For example, even the arrow in the above quote of this post is broken.

I didn't, but I just tried it out on a likely candidate. Their quotes disappear in others' posts, but if you find a post of theirs and temporarily allow them to show, all the quotes show and links work.

If one believes in God, life has objective meaning....
The questionable assumptions there are (a) God exists, and (b) God gives life meaning.

... but if one doesn't believe in a god, then life only has subjective meaning, if at all.
I suppose so.

But this is all rather self-centred, don't you think?

There's the meaning we make for ourselves, then there's the meaning that others make of our lives. Most of the focus here seems to be on the former, to the exclusion of the latter - apart from the God botherers of course, who rely on God for the whole package.

I can’t speak for others, but for me, faith isn’t a self centered thing, although it can be, I guess. A reliance on God to steer the ship so to speak, doesn’t mean we don’t have free will. He’s the all-knowing One though, not me.

To me there is a near certainty that life has no inherent meaning and it does not bother me.

About 5 billion years from now the earth will be gone mankind will be gone and there will be essentially no trace (except for a few pieces of space junk outside of the solar system lost in interstellar space) that we ever existed. Meh...

Do you strive for anything in life, though? If you do, then why bother if there's no point? If what we do really doesn't matter much?

Nihilism is at best non-suffering, but it doesnt promise you will be happy. Even non-violence is a anti-Christ, while pacifism becomes a onomatopoeia for peace that creates safety and happiness simaltaeously with morality.

What an intriguing post. ''Nihilism is at best non-suffering.'' One of my Buddhist friends often says ''pain is inevitable but suffering is optional.'' So, in the end, if we wallow in self pity, we choose our lot in life, I guess.

I strive to be happy. I strive for the people I love to be happy. The point is being unhappy is unpleasant and being happy is pleasant.

Agree, but I don’t think one can exist without the other. Unhappy times make us appreciate happy ones, I think.

Striving for something, anything, within your own personal lifetime is totally different to striving for something unknowable

Life is a process and has no discernible endgame target

If you have any idea of what a target for life looks like please share

:)

I choose to be happy. Your own feelings are a result of your own actions. They can't hurt you unless you choose to suffer.

If you have to ask you really need to actually do something...why does it have to mean anything? Does anyone really think it could mean anything given the vastness of the universe and time...reflects a unhealthy preoccupation with ones self importance..trust me no one is important to the universe. You are here for a personal eternity why do you need more than that?
