Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally takes place today in front of the Lincoln Memorial. He is expecting 300,000 people to show up.

Fox News commentator Glenn Beck has a dream about the rally he and Tea Party heroine Sarah Palin plan in front of the Lincoln Memorial tomorrow in Washington: A crowd that organizers say could reach 300,000.

Beck insists that the assembly -- on the same steps where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech exactly 47 years earlier -- isn’t a political rally. Instead, it’s billed as a celebration of the military, patriotism and American heritage.

Organizers got a permit from the National Park Service that says they expect 300,000 people to attend, the Washington Post reported on its Web site. Beck, who will be joined at the event by Palin, the Republican former Alaska governor, sought to limit crowd expectations during his television show yesterday.

Restoring Honor’

Beck has said tomorrow’s event, titled “Restoring Honor,” isn’t designed to be political or to rally voters ahead of November’s congressional elections. Organizers are discouraging people from bringing signs, and no current officeholders are scheduled to speak.

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols is scheduled to be honored, and team manager Tony La Russa, who plans to introduce him, said they agreed to appear only after being assured the rally wouldn’t be a political event, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported today on its website.

Still, the rally has been surrounded by political activity.

Representative Jason Chaffetz, a Utah Republican, said he asked people to donate to the event, saying in an interview that it was a “good thing for our country.”

Americans for Prosperity, another Tea Party group, is holding its political action convention in Washington over the weekend and busing people to the rally.

I am a bit curious about what exactly he has planned. Despite his claims that this rally is not political, it will likely be seen as another test of the strenght of the "tea party movement" since he and Sara Palin are both going to appear at the event.

When you are rioting for these tickets, or these ATM cards, the second thing that came to mind was -- and this is horrible to say, and I wonder if I'm alone in this -- you know it took me about a year to start hating the 9-11 victims' families? Took me about a year. And I had such compassion for them, and I really wanted to help them, and I was behind, you know, "Let's give them money, let's get this started." All of this stuff. And I really didn't -- of the 3,000 victims' families, I don't hate all of them. Probably about 10 of them. And when I see a 9-11 victim family on television, or whatever, I'm just like, "Oh shut up!" I'm so sick of them because they're always complaining. And we did our best for them. And, again, it's only about 10.

Patriotism? Does he mean the OXYMORON Act?

I can't even guess what he means by "American heritage" but I'm convinced: Glenn Beck talks to God directly.

I reserve judgment until I hear what he actually says. He's not *always* wrong, though he does seem to be conspiracy minded to me.

I doubt Palin or Michelle Bachman will give non-political speeches, but I've heard him manage it, and I doubt that MLK's niece is going to be too political. Live in hope.

He also has a point about the date. No one owns the date or MLK's legacy, and no one has the right to approve who gets to speak on that date or bout that legacy. The left assumes he's anti-black, and so therefore his references to MLK are illegitimate, and admittedly he did say Obama was a racist...but he has said a lot about the importance of blacks in America too, so his problem with Obama seems to be specific to Obama.

He has also (suprisingly) asked the people who come to bring no signs or firearms, so he seems to be trying to keep the even on message.

The two champions of the tea party movement spoke from the very spot where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech 47 years ago. Some civil rights leaders who have denounced Beck's choice of a venue staged a rival rally to honor King.

Palin, the 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee who may make a White House run in 2012, said activists must honor King's legacy by paying tribute to the men and women who protect the United States in uniform.

Beck, pacing back and forth on the marble steps, said he was humbled by the size of the crowd, which stretched along the Washington Mall's long reflecting pool nearly all the way to the Washington Monument.

"Something beyond imagination is happening," he said. "America today begins to turn back to God."

"For too long, this country has wandered in darkness," said Beck, a Fox News host. He said it was now time to "concentrate on the good things in America, the things we have accomplished and the things we can do tomorrow."

Some comments from a blogger who attended the rally:

47 years to the day after participating in the great civil rights march on Washington, I returned to the same space for Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally. In 1963, a crowd of roughly 200,000 filled the "reflecting pool" area below the Lincoln Memorial. Today's crowd packed that area as well as adjacent areas on all three sides. In fact, the throng extended most of the way to the Washington Monument, where the 1963 march began. To me, it looked like there were at least three times as many people at this rally.

The crowd was extraordinarily courteous and polite. I saw virtually no signs except on the way the gathering. Once at the grounds of the rally, I saw only American flags, a few "Don't Tread on Me" flags, and one Israeli flag. There were plenty of conservative t-shirts, of course. However, in the hour to hour-and-a-half I spent walking the crowd, the only shirts I saw that I thought exceeded the limits of good taste were two that featured President Obama with a Hitler-style mustache.

The speakers referred pretty frequently to Martin Luther King and his 1963 speech. In addition, Dr. King's niece addressed the crowd. The crowd responded enthusiastically to each such reference and to the niece. It was, though, an almost entirely white crowd. With all of my walking, I saw only around two dozen African-Americans. One had a small poster that said "do I look racist?" Another was politely arguing with a few equally polite people about the Grand Zero Mosque (the black favored its construction and thought the opposition was anti-Islamic).

The speeches were not about politics, at least not in the usual sense. Instead, they were mostly about concepts -- honor, courage, charity, etc. -- and the need for a "national revival" centering around these virtues. The speakers did not praise or denounce specific policies or politicians. When they weren't praising the traditional virtues or private non-political figures who exemplify them, the speakers praised God and the U.S. military.

I didn't stay to the end and at times, as I walked the grounds, I couldn't hear the speakers clearly. That said, I did not hear any speaker mention Obama or a contemporary legislative or foreign policy issue. The theme, to the extent there was a political one, consisted of the very general view that American should be "restored" rather than "transformed." Beck's hope seemed to be to inspire members of the crowd to help spark such a restoration.

Sarah Palin spoke early in the event. She drew the most enthusiastic applause I heard all day, including Beck's.

By agreement with Beck, Palin spoke in her role as the mother of a soldier about the military. She honored three military heroes in very moving terms. One of them had been at the "Hanoi Hilton." Palin's gracious reference, in that connection, to John McCain drew only a smattering of tepid applause (at least where I was at the time).

In my view, Beck, his supporters, and the rest of the crowd deserve great credit for the positive tone of the event. This, I'm sure, was angry crowd, as it has every right to be. But it did not appear at all to be a hate-filled one. And it applauded the accomplishments of the civil rights movement as vigorously as it applauded America's other great triumphs.

I may not agree with all of the Beck/Tea Pary movement's positions, and certainly not with all aspects of the Tea Party's political strategy. But I agree with its values and admire its character and resolve. The politeness of the crowd did not mask its determination.
