What good are philosophers today?

Oh, and please, I would like to see a brilliant contemporary philosopher. I'm waiting...
Daniel Dennett. Gregory Bateson.

Philosophy is how science is put into context, made part of human life. Otherwise you may as well leave it inside the computer.

I agreed with that definition.:bugeye:
Look at post #75. :bugeye:
Well, I did see that. Only, if you agree, then why are you disputing the definition?
Why are you challenging that there is an inherent connection betweeen philosophy and physics.

And, "greatness' is very often posthumous.
Socrates probably wasn't considered great in his time.
"Cup of tea, anyone?"

That's not what I'm challenging. I'm challenging that physicist are philosophers!

The way I understand the story, Socrates was well known enough.
Gadflies are rarely well liked, even when the purpose they serve is acknowledged

We was well known in Greece, I think. Where else was he well known?

Bullshit!
He was well known with those who would be discussing such things.
The powers that be deemed he was a threat to young minds, so he was executed. A nobody or unknown would not have been such a threat.

"Socrates469–399 bc...Athenian philosopher. As represented in the writings of his disciple Plato, he engaged in dialogue with others in an attempt to reach understanding and ethical concepts by exposing and dispelling error (the Socratic method). Charged with introducing strange gods and corrupting the young, he committed suicide as required." Apple Dictionary 1.0.1

It's easy to discount anything by coming up with your own definitions, ain't it?

Try reading a book. One with documentation.

Hey Y'all, we need to move on, as TruthSeeker looks like he is now SquabbleSeeker.

Your obstructionism is killing this thread, dude.

Wtf? :bugeye:

The discussion was whether he was widely known around the world or not he obviously wasn't- not at that time. Therefore, your claim that he was widely known everywhere is wrong. :bugeye:
