What good are philosophers today?

Oh wait. Ooops... I meant Van Gogh. My memory is failing me...

WARNING! MEMORY OVERLOAD! MEMORY OVERLOAD! :D

(Oh, and it doesn't matter he's a painter. My point is that just because youa re recognize today doesn't mean you were recognized when you were alive. I'm sure there are many other examples of people who are widely recognized today but were not recognized during their lifetime.)

" 'Oh, and he was a painter...' " was my admonishment of your fatuousness. And off-topic-ness.

Picasso was a well known (and sucessful) painter in his own time. Which was not that long ago. He died in 1973.

"His prolific inventiveness and technical versatility made him the dominant figure in avant-garde art in the first half of the 20th century." Apple Dictionary 1.0.1

Why do you change my words? Cannot find a way to disprove my argument?

The fact that he is a painter is irrelevant to the discussion.

We are talking about whether someone can be well known after death without being during life. You claim that everyone that is well known was well known during their lifetime. I disagree and I gave Van Goh as an example.

Think, people, please....!

If he was not well known. It would be impossible for us to know about him today.
I disagree with that and gave Van Gogh as an example. Get it? Do you understand logic?

Bullshit! I said no such thing. In fact, I said, in another post, 'greatness is usually posthumous'.
What I said was, Socrates was in fact well known among those who would likely to be discussing such things, and not a good example. Picasso also was not a good example.
Van Gogh... don't know 'bout his rep during his life.

Here's one that might tho; Poe, E. A. Died in the gutter so to speak. His greatness was not recognized...til after his death.
Ok, the Poe thing is off topic. But I just love a good tangent! :m: :D
