The progression of science has been a gradual acceptance of things we formerly thought too wacky to be real---that an electron can be many places at the same time, that time is relative, that distant particles can be entangled in their spins, that there can be a hole in spacetime, that light can be a particle and a wave at the same time, or that everything exploded from a singularity the size of pea. This is not as much a comment on what is fact or fiction as it is on our arbitrary estimate of what is wacky and therefore impossible. We should probably just let that bias go and go where the evidence leads us.
