Is ESP real?

In my own experience esp is quite real yet unpredictable as to when and where it occurs. I've had dreams that forsaw events the next day. I've had synchronicities with words and the TV. I've done the old thinking of a song and the radio plays it. And I've heard numerous accounts of mothers knowing when one of their kids are injured or even killed. Have you had any esp experiences in your own life? Here's an 8 minute video of some studies conducted by researcher Marilyn Schlitz proving esp is real. Enjoy!

Here is my ESP experience. When I saw this post I knew you were the author even though I have you on ignore and could not see your name. This was only meant as a very small humor interlude - sorry for any derailing.

My wife believes this stuff. She absolutely believes that she and some friends / family have a 'connection' and she 'knows' or 'feels' when they are going to call her before the phone rings. She is an educated engineer and clearly smarter than me, but I still say it is all bullshit.

At what point do you delineate between ESP and mere coincidence?

Two questions.

1. Are you particularly good at assessing probabilities?

2. Regarding thinking about a song and then it's played on the radio...what kind of ESP is at work here?

I'm pretty reasonable about coincidences imo. As far as knowing what song you are about to hear, that would be precog. Any "coincidences" you have found remarkable in your life?

Think I was about 16 in London
Old black and white TV
Old TV show, ½ hour long, Pick a Box
Contestants would answer a question for a chance to Pick a Box with various valued prizes
I "guessed" every box the contestant would pick
I "guessed" every prize in the box for the whole show
I'd not had a perfect score prior or after
Didn't believe in ESP or precognition or UFOs then and all the associated clap trap then
Almost 60 years later still don't

:)

The other night the final Jeopardy category was titled "National Flags and the Bible". I immediately knew what the question would be. It would have something to do with the "cedars of Lebanon" mentioned in the Bible. Sure enough that was the question, and the answer was the flag of Lebanon. But this is really a case of synchronicity not esp as a few weeks earlier my Lebanese donut baker told me there was a picture of a cedar on the flag of Lebanon. What are the odds of that happening?

Me an a niece of mine email each other about 15 times a year wit no particular pattern on when we send 'em... an one time when it had been a couple of weeks sinse we had emailed each other i sent her a email... an befor she knew i had sent her a email she sent me one just a minute later... an then sent anuther one right after that about how we was writin our emails to each other at the same time an didnt even know it... so under those circumstances it did seem quite a "coincidence".!!!

So, when you are thinking about a song, and then it plays on the radio this is precognition on your part knowing that that particular radio station was going to play that song?

When you think about songs and they don't immediately play on the radio is that faulty precognition or do you sometimes just think about songs not expecting them to be played immediately? When they are played immediately were you thinking about them differently than when they don't play?

Probability is a ratio of favorable outcomes to total outcomes. When there are a lot of occurrences and just a few favorable outcomes, that's random and to be expected.

If you think of songs all day and eventually one comes on the radio but all the other songs you thought of didn't come on the radio, your track record is actually very low and therefore just a random occurrence.

There are a lot of coincidences in my life but nothing requiring ESP. Understanding probability is sufficient to understand anything that has occurred in my life. I don't need God to explain the unknown and it's the same with ESP.

Humans are much better with pattern recognition than with understand probability.

You claim synchronicity but clearly do not understand either synchronicity OR statistics enough since the question "What are the odds of that happening?" Is not in any way able to be calculated.
A "wild guess billion to one" is not a calculation while synchronicity requires more than one occurrence
Not sure even coincidence would fit the bill

:)

I've had my sister mention a song on Facebook I had heard in a movie just a day before. This has actually happened twice! And these songs weren't popular modern songs. They were rather old. Eddie Vedder and someone else..Am I underestimating the chances of this happening?

Someone mentioning a song you have recently heard is ESP to you? What isn't ESP to you?

I've experienced coincidences with things I dreamed about and then that topic coming up the next day. I feel like the amount of things we dream about randomly greatly exceeds our expectations, so a coincidence here and there is to be expected. OTOH, if a dream trope comes up like two or three more times the next day in unrelated instances, that's when I suspect synchronicity. What does it mean? I don't know. It's just interesting that some tropes tend to recur and happen in temporal clusters.

Do you know what synchronicity is?
It's just mumbo jumbo in reality and it's looking for meaning where none exists.

I once flew 7,000 miles to go on vacation and an acquaintance happened to walk in large hall in Thailand at a kickboxing match with a prostitute and sat in front of my wife and I.

It was certainly a coincidence but no other meaning was involved.

"In 1974, Hopkins starred in a film called 'The Girl from Petrovka,' based on the book by George Feifer. Not long after signing on to the film, Hopkins went to London to try to track down a copy of the book. After canvasing several bookshops, however, he couldn't find one. Frustrated and defeated, Hopkins entered the Leicester Square stop to board a train home when all of a sudden he spotted a copy of 'The Girl from Petrovka' that appeared to have been discarded on a nearby bench. Naturally he swiped it, and if the story ended there it'd be a pretty funny coincidence.

But the story doesn't end there. Two years later while filming in Vienna, author George Feifer visited the set. During a conversation with Hopkins, Feifer mentioned that he didn't even have a copy of his own book -- that he'd lent his last one (complete with his own annotations) to a friend who had lost it somewhere in London. Hopkins, puzzled, then fetched his copy, which also had notes in the margins. When he showed it to Feifer, the author confirmed that, amazingly, it was the same book."----https://www.moviefone.com/2011/01/28/anthony-hopkins-coincidence/

Once I had a dictionary opened in my lap with the TV going on in the background. I read the definition I was looking for and then when my eyes went to the other open page I saw the name of some obscure city in Puerto Rico. At that moment the TV mentions this city! Quite a coincidence eh?

Yes, those are coincidences. You are supplying the meaning (if you are even doing that).

I went from Phoenix to San Diego with my girlfriend and was walking down the sidewalk at La Jolla beach when I ran into a friend from school in Phoenix who had lent me a sleeping bag to use on spring break. He didn't know I was going to San Diego nor did I know he was going there.

We past each other at the same time. It's a coincidence.

It has an impact on you when something like that happens and all the other times when something like that doesn't happen you don't remember it. Since it's a rare event it's just a coincidence. There is no causality or anything else going on.
