Trump 2.0

I am a monoglot in a family of polyglots. My beloved spouse is fluent in three languages(english, spanish, and italian), one of my sons also has three languages(english, spanish and quechua). Both are also musically gifted---I suspect that these gifts utilize the same portions of the brain(justaguess).
After 76 years of learning, I have yet to fully master the one language.
My partner was Hungarian descent. Her father and sisters taught me.
When I went over we could understand each other if everyone spoke slowly.
It is practice with natives that matters.

Something I've just found out: Trump made himself Chairman of the Kennedy Center. He gutted the Trustees of all/many of Democrats, and had their places filled with his sycophants, such as JD Vance's wife, and others.

Trump had previously boasted that he had never been to the KC, and even became the first President, during his first term, not to attend the Kennedy Honors. He has overturned the tradition of bipartisanship among the trustees, and his first act was to ensure that a performance by a drag queen did not go ahead.

I mean, the list of rulers who tried to dictate what Arts were considered "degenerate" (I'm not sure if Trump has used that exact phrase) is probably not huge, and there is one name from the early-mid 20th century that springs to mind.

Did this get much attention in the US??
Yes I was aware of this. I think there were at least two c.20th authoritarians that dictated what art was acceptable.

And like at least one of those guys, Trump plainly doesn't even remotely comprehend the stuff he deems to be "good". (Stalin just had bad taste--I don't think he was an idiot.) Trump clearly doesn't get the "gay" implications in "YMCA", and I seriously doubt that any Republican has ever paid attention to the lyrics of Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA".

Sculptor never bothered to register a land record, and he threw away the house deeds, because a house is just walls.
Man-made things.
Let's see, who was it that said "Property is theft"? A c.19th French anarchist, I believe.

I never had sculptor down as an anarchist. But then, it's true Bannon and Musk are sort of anarchists in their different ways, so maybe that now appeals to sculptor too, these days?

Pierre-Joseph Proudhon.

He also said,

"I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, de-briefed, or
numbered!"

later to be adapted by Patrick McGoohan for The Prisoner.

Oh I recognise that from "The Prisoner" instantly. Was it really Proudhon who originally said it? How interesting.

Be seeing you. ;)

He forgot to say "or hung by the chads"

I liked that "Droigt de la Paresse" book ,written by Paul Lafargue who was Marx's son in law.

"Sir Keir Starmer has firmly rejected claims that the United States is an unreliable ally.

He said: “I do not accept that the US is an unreliable ally. The US has been a reliable ally to the UK for many, many decades, and continues to be. There are no two countries as closely aligned as our two countries and our defence, our security and intelligence is intertwined in a way no two other countries are.”

He also confirmed that he spoke with President Trump last night, but declined to disclose the details of their conversation."

That is good to know because from here right now, the US with Trump is not looking like an ally.

I wonder how the conversation went?

Unfortunately these things are forgotten as the generations die off.

The end of the war was 80 years ago, kids from war may still be alive and have memories but all those politicians and soldiers from the 19430s/40s, soldiers parents, and wives are dead.

A good thing is that enemies can forget feuds and wars also. England has been at war with pretty much everyone at some point. We even went to war over pastry with Mexico.
We have calmed down a bit now.

Just to clarify, Mexico and France went to war with each other. Britain supported Mexico (it was our "Anyone But France" phase, I guess, that some say has been going on since 1066) although we never actually got phyiscal, and we helped broker a peace (reparations paid by Mexico to France). It wasn't ostensibly over pastries, either, but because French property and businesses in Mexico were damaged during a turbulent political time (1830-40s). The owner of one such business happened to be the pastry-chef to the President. Hence the nickname for the war. There could have been worse names, I guess. ;)

Starmer is a top lawyer and must know to only say things that can be defended for truthfulness when they are parsed .

He does us all a favour by arguably "lying for his country" but it is probably best yo see this as a delaying tactic as America's position is fairly transparent.(very much "take it or leave it" and "precious us" )
Perhaps Europe can be criticized gor relying on a country whose character was pretty obvious long before Trump came to power.

Look forward to Trump's "panty war" with Mexico ...

Завтра Трамп выступает перед конгрессом. Он уже пообещал сообщить "нечто грандиозное". Надеюсь, на этот раз его покормят перед выступлением.

Now your name is being translated as "George" when I use chrome translate for Olga's posts. I sometimes wonder when this shift in American character - really, a shift in the Republican Party in its core goals and beliefs - happened. Seeds were planted in the 90s, perhaps, with Gingrich's "Republican Revolution." There were already people in the party then who were comfortable with moving away from fealty to the Constitution. For me, the machinery really fired up in 2013, when the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act in its ruling on Shelby County v. Holder. Sadly I can remember the sixties and seventies, when Republicans were mostly just fiscal conservatives who could still rally around Democrat Lyndon Johnson when he pushed for the Voting Rights Act in 1965 - i.e. almost everyone was (at least publicly) for fair play in electoral politics.

When that bloody Ayn Rand became all the rage. Newt Gingrich's era, was it?

In Rand, they found a conveniently self-serving justification for selfishness and lack of consideration for the less fortunate. It turned the previous Christian idea of social obligation, derived from the teaching of Christ in the gospels, on its head. It became OK to be an arsehole, basically, and they embraced the new doctrine with relish. The ensuing moral collapse has brought us to this point.

The irony is that they have nevertheless managed to appeal to the American Religious Right. One wonders whether these self-appointed Baptist ministers ever read the gospels. Perhaps too busy scouring the Old Testament for verses they can use to condemn homosexuality.

Never could tell what he was saying until I checked out the lyrics on line.
I was amused by the push to make "Born to Run" the official song of New Jersey. And those lyrics are easier to understand.

I heard a comedian's take on that once who went through it line by line.

"In the day we sweat it out on the streets of a runaway American dream" - OK. So far, so good.

"At night we ride through the mansions of glory In suicide machines" - First red flag. Don't want a state song to mention suicide.

"Sprung from cages on Highway 9 Chrome wheeled, fuel injected, and steppin' out over the line" - OK again not too bad

"Oh, baby this town rips the bones from your back" - Now there's some imagery you might not want associated with your state. "Come to New Jersey! We'll rip the bones from your back!"

"It's a death trap, it's a suicide rap" - It should probably be a law that no song that mentions suicide twice in the very first verse can be a state song

"We gotta get out while we're young" - So no "come to New Jersey, the Garden State!" here. More like "for God's sake, get out of this hellhole state before it's too late!"
