My favorite was Gallaga.

The great thing is, that while my kids can kick my ass at Halo 1, 2, and 3; I can still kick their asses at Galaga.

Old schoolers know about trying to get the most out of a quarter LOL.
I miss the 80s/early 90s. You don't see nearly as many arcade machines around nowadays as back then (besides "Golden Tee" at random bars).

I went to a movie theater a few months ago, and they had a retro styled arcade machine which featured Galaga + a few other classics. It was 75 cents to play!

Anyone every play a PD game on ST/amiga/pc called grav2. I LOVED that game but cannot find it on any abandonware site. It was pure pixel perfect good physics rotate and thrust. Now I would still play that.

Omega Race! I had to type in the program from a book for the Commodore Vic20, and upload the game from a cassette tape every time.

I don't miss the days of waiting for my cassettes to load on my dragon32 or spectrum48. I thought they were amazing at the time hahaha what a fool. I spent days typing in code to make games which basically ended up as a load of crap boxes, I though they were great (a space invaders one I got from a book was actually quite good at the time).

My st wasn't bad since I loaded disks into ram drive (I added a load of mem upgrades, had to solder the aries upgrades in back then) so was quick access. Floppies were not to slow though unlike cassette, I could never afford a zip drive :(

Please, just refer to my avatar! :) (Super Metroid!) The best Super Nintendo Game... right up there with Zelda a Link to the Past.

Whats funny is, I thought that after a while of having not played the Super Nintendo that some of my hand eye coordination skills would have diminished.... and none such thing has happened. I guess even when I'm an old man I'll still be pro at those games, what a waste of time lol

X-Com series.

Yes Yes Yes YES!

I still have it on my pooter today and it still gets the occasional play - in fact I was playing it last night.

You do know that Xcom EU, Xcom TFTD, and Xcom Apocalypse are now available as abaondoware (i.e. freedownload) and all run native on XP ?

Greatest arcade game of all time:

Defender - no fucking contest

Even Apoc? Geez. *stares forlornly at purchased disk*

I want to play it on mine but have a) no time and b) my bloody graphics card is so fast it jumps everywhere. :(

PS: nice sig, BTW - I heard about that group the other day. Cheeky. Need their CD.

Go to http://www.abandonia.com - and get a dos emulator like dosbox - dosbox allows you to compensate for running it on newer faster hardware.

If you are still having probs - maybe an older dos native version might help:

There's oodles of other classic games on those two sites if you are into that sort of thing

for other techie tips if you still have problems, go to the forums on www.xcomufo.com

I got dosbox but it's still hugely fast. I'm trying to find a "slowage" program; saw something about some mod in a forum once. Man, I really wish they'd add more in that series. Can't tell me there wouldn't be a big return on that. They did Defender, didn't they? But I heard it sucked.

I'm sure there is a way to reduce virtual cpu cycles in dosbox - been ages since I used it tho so cant remember.

I think there's another app called Smoke which can be used to slowdown old dos apps.

There were some fairly recent XCOM sequels

Not played them - or even seen them yet - but I heard they were rubbish

Yeah! I think Smoke the one. Hmmm...maybe I should give that a crack. Thanks for the tip!

There is only one futuristic sports game that was ever worth a toss - but that turned out to be one of the greatest games of all time.
