can we we do a comparison?
do the aboriginal people of oz show similar symptoms of maladjustment to colonization?
are there common policies in the respective govt's that result in these outcomes?

is poverty the primary and perhaps the only cause of these pathologies or are there wider issues?
can we contrast by examining a few tribes that have money?

    heh
turns out that determining a tribe's "extinct" status is not solely a decision made by scientists qualified to do so.

politicians render the judgment as well

What about emigration? Do any native Americans just leave and start over elsewhere? Or is that an alien notion?

Do any of them suppress/resist identification with their colonisation?

    ??
if they can start over then they can assimilate. the foreign lands are encountered at the borders of the reservations.
besides, some tribes cope better than others. if a white man claims some indian blood, it would most likely be cherokee

    ??
slow collective suicide ring a bell?

I used to date a Native American. Her mother's mother was a Princess. Anyway, she was a normal yank. And I think this is what has happened with the majority of Native Americans. They lived in a normal house, her father worked at GM on the line. They were classic middle America. We met at a part in University.

She wanted to get free University (because in MI Native Americans get free University). So, being 100% she went back to "her" tribe to get the papers she needed. The Chief in no short terms told her to F*ck off. She was sad. I understood where he was coming from. She didn't live on a reservation so why should she get anything free? If people like her keep coming around, then people will bitch it's a freebie and take it away from the "real" Native Americans who actually NEED support to go to University (which ironically I heard talk about before I left MI).

Oh, is that what the Europeans were doing. It seemed to me like the Europeans were incapable of learning new tricks - except surreptitiously, like the way they copied democratic features of some Eastern tribes - and that was where all the problems began.

But it was a kind and generous metaphor on your part for the survivors of genocide.

I don't think it has anything to do with being Native American. It has to do with generations of welfare recipients. You see it in all communities, no matter what race.

Anyone ever been to a casino on a reservation? Very few Indians work there. Why should they? Just sit back, get a US gvmt check for being Native American, maybe get a check from the tribe from casino profits, get a welfare check, get food stamps, get WIC, etc.

I couldn't do it, but it works for some people. If your culture doesn't focus on material possessions, but more on community, why not. Both parents sit at home with the kids, play cards/dominoes with friends, hang out in the bar, etc.
