I'll pass that kind thought on to him.

To be fair, my friend wasn't accusatory in his bitterness. It was more his lamenting (thanks for reminding me of that word) the loss of former lovers, colleagues, and friends and how advances in science came too late for them. And there was a sort of judgmental complacency among the rest of us who avoided the problem by not being gay - until it became obvious that HIV can be caught by anyone coming in contact with the virus.

Thanks for the link. At least in 40 years it's gone from a death sentence to a life sentence to the possibility of a complete cure and an effective vaccine.

Es exchemist points out, HIV infection should be amenable to a vaccination treatment. In AIDS, the damage done to the immune system does not occur until HIV gets a hold, which vaccination would prevent.

Yes. My understanding is most people with HIV can expect a fairly normal lifespan, if they are careful.

Regarding your friend, I'm sure we all know people whose lives might have been prolonged by new treatments if only they had been available earlier. That's the nature of medical progress, I suppose. I feel a slight pang every time I read of advances in treating ovarian cancer, which killed my wife five years ago, at the age of 55. But then she was kept going, mostly in reasonable health, for 7 years after diagnosis, which is pretty good for that type of cancer. And nobody would argue that cancer is a Cinderella condition when it comes to research effort. Maybe AIDS was, initially.

    i think your being silly

conscious verses subconscious self control of bodily functions is a tricky subject
womens menstrual cycles have been proven beyond doubt to be effected by psycho schematic control levers
this would be an evolutionary compulsory for stress etc

    example
women with aggressive domineering sexual partners tend to have mostly all male children
equally if the woman is constantly scared or paranoid she is more likely to have male children
but this evolutionary development may have been wiped out in india & china

SARS-CoV-2 stands for severe acute respiratory syndrome / coronavirus type 2. It is a pathogen, specifically a coronavirus.
COVID-19 stands for coronavirus disease 2019. It is the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2.

Many people mix them up. But there's a difference; you can have a SARS-CoV-2 infection without having COVID-19.
Yes. But again, getting that COVID-19 vaccine does NOTHING to help you with a current infection. The only reason to get a COVID vaccine is to protect you against the NEXT infection.

And if the experimental HIV vaccine makes it to market, exactly the same caution will apply.

I'm so sorry to hear that, exchemist. I don't know what to say.

Nothing: death is all around us, though we often pretend it isn't. I had a ringside seat observing the latest chemotherapy, for a number of years. It is really quite good now. Curiously though, cis-platinate drugs (carboplatin) remain one of the mainstays, even today. I remember learning about those in the 6th form at school, in 1971. And the one that makes your hair fall out, taxol, named I think after the Pacific Yew tree. Plus some very new things that were not even NICE-approved. But I would not want to be an oncologist. In the end you always lose - at any rate with ovarian cancer - and have to tell your patients the game is up.

    Why not?

Your body is fighting the virus with the body's own immune system defence. Waking up the troops and starting up a recruitment drive to get more troops

The vaccine provides reinforcement fighters with the ability to provide more

The virus itself has already pulled the fire alarm in the troop barracks. The vaccine pulling a second alarm doesn't alert them more.

No it doesn't. The vaccine doesn't provide fighters. It gets the fighters riled up to grab their guns and shoot. If they're all ready under attack, it's too late.

    https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/different-vaccines/mrna.html

........ The mRNA will enter the muscle cells and instruct the cells’ machinery to produce a harmless piece of what is called the spike protein........Next, our cells display the spike protein piece on their surface. Our immune system recognizes that the protein doesn’t belong there. This triggers our immune system to produce antibodies and activate other immune cells to fight off what it thinks is an infection

recognizes that the protein doesn’t belong there - points out the fake enemy and says look for these bastards

    ie more alert

    activate other immune cells

    rounds up reinforcements

Guess we have different ways of expressing the workings
