Psychopaths and sociopaths excel in life quite often. From bosses/supervisors at countless companies, to the very wealthy captains of industry and finance. Sociopaths and psychopaths are common in those groups.
The issue is that to the layman, who doesn't really understand such things, the terms 'psychopath' or 'sociopath' are sorely misunderstood. They imagine a person of either type must be violent, as evidenced by posts in this thread. So the lack of understanding clouds the issue.
The fact that Assad's regime has now started mixing up the precursors into Sarin are very troubling in the last two days. If they use gas on the populace this conflict will blow up.

Since only a summary of the information about his apprehension and execution has been made public, we're unable to second-guess the decision of the Americans to shoot him. Nonetheless no one has suggested that he was wearing a suicide-bomber vest, which would have made it necessary to kill him in self-defense.
I think we're all a little uneasy about the way information about his capture, arguably the biggest news story in years, has been withheld. We don't even know that it really happened, or that it was really bin Laden. Considering that there's an entire cottage industry denying the reality of the Moon landing, where are the wackos when we need them???
They dumped his body in the sea in accordance with Islamic law in order to avoid offending Muslims? Isn't it about sixty years too late for the U.S. government to start pretending to care what Muslims think? Besides, surely they had every conceivable resource waiting on those ships. Before dumping his body they could have done a DNA test in front of trustworthy witnesses from both U.S. parties and several foreign representatives.
As I have often opined, in all but a small minority of cases there's no justification for killing a criminal once you've managed to capture him. It becomes nothing more than an act of revenge, the most evil and destructive of all our primitive caveman emotions. It sends the message that sometimes it's okay to kill people you're angry at, that violence is sometimes acceptable. This is a message our children should never hear.
One of the few exceptions is for people who can continue to wreak havoc from prison because of:
- Their power: Mafia dons continue to run their organizations from their cell.
- Their friends: imprison a terrorist and his buddies will capture twenty of your people and kill them if you don't release him.
- Their influence: Mandela (who of course is a good guy, although flawed like all of us) inspired a lot of people by simply existing.
- Their resources: wealthy kingpins bribe officials to let them out.
- He'd find a way to communicate with his lieutenants and continue running the terror network.
- Every month we'd read about an Al Qaeda cell capturing ten Americans and promising to decapitate them on camera if their boss is not released.
- He would certainly inspire the loyalty of terrorists the world over.
- The only one that would probably not happen is #4: there'd be no way to break him out of that prison.
Assad is nowhere close to Bin Laden, he runs a country and does not comply to Western demands for resources.
Not sure if he's a psychopath, per se, but he and his wife are certainly fiddling while Rome burns.

Rome burned quite a while ago. It's ruins remind on what the West bases their civilization on. Assad is defending his nation from Western control, terrorists, and countries like Turkey who initiated this.

The U.N. disagrees with the United States all the time. About every ten years they do something that motivates Americans to lobby our government to withdraw our membership from the organization and to tell them to move their headquarters to another country.
As far back as 1964, Barry Goldwater ran for President on a very conservative platform, and one of his promises was to resign from the U.N. The bumper stickers read: "U.S. out of U.N., U.N. out of U.S."
The most recent thing the UN did to rile the US was to take the plight of the Palestinians seriously. The U.S. government regards itself as the protector of Israel (no matter how evil Israel becomes in its campaign to punish the Palestinians for the Holocaust because it was never allowed to kill all the Germans) so it cannot allow this.

I'm afraid it doesn't help at all, at most it confuses people unfamiliar with rigorous science.
Talking about psychiatry isn't really that different from talking about religion/astrology/witchcraft/homeopathy and so on.
How about voting on malaria or aids infection? Could we vote them in or out of existence, just because we want so, the same way the folks at the APA do with "mental illnesses?"
The myths of psychiatry are still very pervasive in the 21st century. Unfortunately very few people realize that there's no real science in psychiatry.

Most likely because that assertion is controversial and not universally accepted, so anyone who states it without qualification, as you just did, is automatically under suspicion. Psychiatry is an awkward combination of psychology (one of the "soft sciences" which strives to adhere to the scientific method but is constrained from using many of its important tools such as experimentation) and medicine (itself an offshoot of the "hard science" of biology and also constrained for the same reason: rigorous use of some the toolset of the scientific method would be impractical, immoral or even illegal outside of the Third Reich). Nonetheless, although this may make it difficult for some people to include psychiatry among the "soft sciences" (a tough call since even economics is allowed in that category), it hardly supports the claim that there is absolutely no science in it. Hell, as a musician I can assure you that there's science in music!
If you're going to make an inflammatory statement insulting an entire profession that many people (including members of SciForums) have found both honorable and helpful, you need to provide supporting evidence for your point of view.
Either that or adopt a more scholarly rhetorical style and edit your statement to, "Many people, including this writer, believe that there is very little science in psychiatry. I will provide evidence supporting this assertion if requested."
Since you are surely an honorable man and therefore that is probably what you meant to write, I hereby challenge you to provide your evidence.
The behavior of Assad was predictable. When Libia was liberated in the Arab Spring, Khadafi was killed. Once the Arab spring moved to Syria, that same writing was on the walls for Assad. Khadafi gave up without a fight, but he was still killed for the past.
Assad knew his fate would more than likely be the same, as soon the mob got hold of him and his family. His reaction reflects his fear and how hard he feels he needs to fight to survive. As the rebels get closer, he gets more afraid, and more deadly.
