I don't know about other places, but where I live, Australia, there's been alot said recently about the "emo scene." Emo's are portrayed as depressed wrist-cutters, but do you think that's fair? i mean, in every scene there are extremists, but to say every emo is like this... And it's not just emo's but also other scenes are starting to be frowned upon too.

I'm not emo but I know lots of emos and the majority of them are just normal people. Do you think things have been blown out of proportion by the media, just because of a stupid, minority? I'd love to hear people's thoughts, especially people from overseas, or people in the "emo scene" themselves...

    Thanks guys...

What media and what a emo scene? Have seen nothing.
And since when do teenager angst deserves a special subculture?

As I understand it they are just young people with psychological problems and a crappy attitude towards others.

Well in Australia, the emo scene is pretty big. and i agree that some of them do have psych problems and a crappy attitude towards others, but at the same time, that's just usually the minority that try to act 'hardcore.'

But what annoys the hell out of me is, the people who judge usually have never even spoken to an emo (or whatever person), and they just have pre-conceived ideas, due to what they've 'heard.'

I don't know about overseas, but emos have been all over the news lately, and parents are being warned to 'watch out for emos.' Again, these people have never met an emo in their lives...

It's not just emos. it's insane how so many people jet ridiculed and judged instantly just because of how they dress or what kind of music they listen to??? Before people even take the chance to get to know them...

first of all, what exactly is a emo ? , is it someone that looks at life and death a bit differently than others, or is it someone that takes a perverse joy in hurting themselves ?

What's the difference between an 'emo' and a 'goth'? If they are the same thing, then the style has been around since the 80s (nothing new, including the compulsion to ridicule it).

Angsty teenagers and 20year olds that listen to whiny music on how it hurts that their gf left them, or how all the world is mean and so they will show it by being assholes.

The unusual/black hair, makeup, nails and clothes scream for attention. Why do they get all upset when they get that attention?

Nah, not goths. goths are more about individualism, black clothes, vampires and sadness and doom.

Emos are just your general people with psychological problems that don't know how to express themselves, therefore they created their own scene of unoriginal whining.

For anyone sad enough to care, you might find out a little more here.

If you choose to wear the 'badge' of a particular grouping then you should not be surprised if others associate your position/views/outlook with others who wear this badge.

To the extent that every Goth I know says "I'm a real Goth, the rest are just wannabe poseurs"...

I'm fairly young and I have just learned about "emo". It doesn't really strike me as a genre worth learning more about to be quite honest.

Being young is a pretty tough period of time to go through. Kids at that age haven't been around long enough to actually understand much about life in general and a lot of what they see depresses them, primarily because of that lack of life experience - they don't quite know what to make of it.

As a result, kids have always been rebels and try to find ways that mark themselves as being set apart from the society that they don't fully understand yet. They've always tried to do that. And what I find amusing about it is that each new generation thinks they are the VERY first ones to do that. Little do they realize that they are nothing more than the latest phase of something that's been going on forever.

Pretty sad, really. They're nothing more than a group of tiny fish awash in a very large ocean.

i agrred with you up until the very last sentence, how is it sad if you just described why they do it in the majority of your post?

going by what you said it makes it normal behaviour, and to be expected of the youth until it phases out and they conform to society and accept all the bs going on around them and stop rebeling.

actualy theres nothing wrong with some good old fashion non conformism.

    peace,

Then you got the main points but completely missed to moral of the story. It's sad because they think they've invented something new and actually believe they can accomplish something by it. And it's sad because they are so confused.

I Think thats a touch unfair, emo means emotive or emotional, i dress in balck wear black make up, and people call me emo, but i do not cut myself, also it is about the type of music you listen to, and i think people should leave these people alone to express themselves, because not letting people express they're fealings breads angry young men and women.

Emos do not necessarily cut themselves, some may: there's sad individulas in any subculture.
They're no worse (and no better) than any other youth trend, except that the music is particularly crap.
