No, the simple electrolysis of a saline solution cannot produce atomic sodium and chlorine. It will produce other compounds - namely sodium hydroxide and HCL (hydrochloric acid).
Commercially, metallic sodium is produced by the Down's process and the chlorine is a byproduct.

How pure would t he HCl be during the electrolysis of salt water? Would it be fair to slowly pump the water off during electrolysis, or maybe partition the innermost portion of it off? Maybe freeze it during electrolysis... Thanks for helping a noob :D:o
