how about some notes to put down thoughts of posts or threads before posting..also with an instant save function like gmail..in case you have to log off or just want to come back to it later..

i was thinking of something similar to the digg (thumbs up or down) system..it's because many of the best posts are so good you can't add anything to them, but from the POV of the poster it's a lack of feedback which might discourage him..i'm asking for a way to show our appreciation to posts we can't reply to..as itmight sound stupid quoting something and saying.."thanks..that was very nice post"..

You mean a rating system?

Alternatively, you can always just post and say "good post", link the post you meant instead of quoting it.

waaaa.

This is exactly what's been going wrong on here for some time.
People want to change this into some sort of pseudo- facebook/myspace 'social' site. That's not the intent of SciForums. Too much whining, not enough content.

Does this perhaps refer to sciforums photo album or visitor message & friends list thing?

For the photo album, all I did is just arranging the photos of the members which they post from time to time in the Picture Thread Mark threads so that they can easily be found... also, this is not obligatory (for member to post pics). Some members like to post pics of themselves, some others like to post pics of their pets (in the appropriate subforum). What exactly is wrong with that?

Though I am not the one who create the visitor message box and friends list things, I am in favor for that, because I (and I guess many other members, too), would like to be informed about their personal things sometimes. Also, those things are hidden from the threads board, so it does not disturb "scientific discussion", is it?

Another suggestion is to make post count invisible. It is meaningless since it is not weighted for quality.

yes, but embedded online, not all people access sciforums from the same computer all the time.

it won't be as simple as a "thank you" or "thumbs up" button..if twenty people liked a post, i don't one will link to the post and say; "good post" and the other 19 will "i second that"..

idk just voicing my thoughts
:)

This is probably just something that is already available to moderators and administrators, but I am personally opposed to deceit and lies in discussions. I know that when I visit some social networking sites, some peoples pages display wigets that say, "you are currently visiting from IP address, # XXX.XXX.XX.XX I think it would be absolutely wonderful if when reading posts around the forum, I could know who is really who, INCLUDING moderators. IP addresses should be posted after peoples Avatars. EVERYONE. This would enable all to identify socks immediately.

I feel like I post around here, and people are walking around with sheets on their heads. lol I mean, sure, there are those that have lots of big post counts, and I have very small post count, so I shouldn't talk, yes. But, if anything, those who have big post counts should understand what I mean by this idea.

The very idea that people around here make more than one ID to support their own points of view, or for whatever reason, seems juvenile.. The fact that only moderators get to know about it, or the ones that listen to the devils radio get to know about it seems to be rather unfair in my opinion. If a person is caught making socks, or has more than one ID currently registered to their name, I think they should have a little asterisk next to their avatar to warn other users to be on the look out for said deceit, so they know that said individual has such character attributes.

(Dear Plazma Inferno!: I whole heartedly apologize if such an idea would out YOUR socks, and if this would disturb the culture of the board, I herewith withdraw any such notion. :p)

The whole Internet is about privacy, so I guess revealing IPs would be a huge mistake.
Either we would lose members, or they would post using proxy, so identification would be still impossible.
Also, it's against forum ToS.
Thanks for suggestion.

P.S.
I don't have socks, except Captain Kremmen, skaught and Enmos. ;)
I sold Gustav to anonymous bidder last year.

Oh? lol I am utterly technologically enept. "I'm the most inept that ever stepped" ~ Morrisey

How does one go about posting using a "proxy"?

or is this, "classified" information?

I don't have socks, except Captain Kremmen, skaught and Enmos.
So, like am I the ONLY person in this forum that is in the complete dark about who is running around under which sheet? I feel so. . . . so. . . naive.

Like, Tiassa is actually also S.A.M., and inzomnia is also takandjive, and Challenger78 is also Asguard, etc. etc. etc.

oye' I'm so confused :bawl:

I was referring more to the notion of an active chatbox.

I've no problem with people posting images (although they are annoying when of large file size and dropped into threads). Personally though, I'd limit them to being part of one's profile.

Though I am not the one who create the visitor message box and friends list things, I am in favor for that, because I (and I guess many other members, too), would like to be informed about their personal things sometimes. Also, those things are hidden from the threads board, so it does not disturb "scientific discussion", is it?

Again, I have no problem with the current visitor message box. As you said, it doesn't actively interfere with the forums, and to an extent, it can remain private.

Overall, my contention is that we should be promoting more posting, not an 'interactive social network'...

Suggestions so far:

1. Embedded media (videos)
2. Image hosting on site
3. SciForums Toolbar application
4. Integrated Chat Box
5. Bigger avatars
6. Signatures enabled
7. Advanced Ignore option
8. No 'Go Advanced' reply button
9. Vending machine

10. Subscribe to Poster option
11. Multiple forum skins
12. Show/Hide Signature button
13. Reputation System

In order of importance (to me of course):

  • "Bigger avatars".
Even slightly larger ones would be an improvement (80x80 would be fine I think).
I often have to discard an image because it either isn't that recognizable at 60x60 or because it appears deformed because of the reduction in pixels.
  • If it's at all possible, "Image hosting on site" would be nice.
  • Also "Multiple forum skins" could be nice.

I would have to go with a live chat system for each topic. Or at least a live chat topic for each most visited thread.

Yeah, that would be neat ;-)

You shouldn't be, you're my sockpuppet. ;)

:bugeye: ahhhhh. I'm not sure who should be more flattered Oli, myself, or thou. Admittedly, it could nearly pass for truth. I'd never pull it off though, you are for more brainy when it comes to science. I could never B.S. my way through a topic unrelated to social sciences, any humanities, or history and pass myself off as you.

However, from the flavor and characteristics of the people on this board, I have found that the person I have the most in common with is Tiassa. I'd more likely be his sock if we were playing the "who's sock could I be game."

I'm not sure this is the appropriate thread, do you? If you want to start a . . . . "If I were someone's "sock puppet," and go first, by all means.

No, just mildly curious. But you're right, not the appropriate forum - apologies. 'Course, I didn't start the tangent...

Tables? Maybe? Maybe not?

Is there any way to install a table function for BBcode?

two lines of text the same font size and color as now under your screen name extending 1/4 to 1/2 of the post width. this can act as a signature and not be too intrusive.
advanced reply box as default or some way to preview your post before posting.
free beer.
