Wiki said:
Sagan was a user of marijuana, although he never admitted this publicly during his life. Under the pseudonym "Mr. X", he wrote an essay concerning cannabis smoking in the 1971 book Marihuana Reconsidered, whose editor was Lester Grinspoon.[8][9] In his essay, Sagan commented that marijuana encouraged some of his works and enhanced experiences. After Sagan's death, Grinspoon disclosed this to Sagan's biographer, Keay Davidson. The publishing of this biography, Carl Sagan: A Life, in 1999, brought much media attention to the issue of the use and legalisation of marijuana.[10]

The plethora of misconceptions about Marijuana just saddens me.

Well, it got me throught the university after all :m: :p

Yeah, all the false information about pot that is out there just pisses me off to no end.

I've enjoyed it since I was 21. I've taken several IQ tests since then as well. They have ranged from 116, to a 128 from the one I took about a year ago. Weed doesn't make someone stupid, their own stupidity makes them stupid.

Amen to that bro!!
I too get a little cranky with all the ignorance about it that goes around.

When I was in HS, I didn´t even dream to take a spliff; because of all the: "drugs are bad" and D.A.R.E. stuff.

But in my last year, we had to make a scientific research about a subject we chose, so I chose "cannabis sativa" out of curiosity. I did a 300 pages essay with a lot of good sources, like Biology books that my parents had (mom and dad are biologists, as well as my step-dad); so I had a lot of biography to do so.
I was surprised with my own research to find out that MJ is one of the few plants that are considered "drugs" and that is not physically addictive; plus, I didn´t find any credible source on which it stated that MJ is damaging for your health.
So there I was, in High School, making a presentation to all of the students (from 13-17 years old), telling them all the real info. about cannabis, and telling them that there is actually nothing wrong with it.
Next thing I knew, all of the 8th and 9th graders were smoking it, and it created a whole "weed culture" in my HS; I didn´t know my research would have that impact, but it surely did. That was cool to experience... :m:

Kind of like you, I´ve enjoyed it since I was 19 years old; it is very good stuff to have around.

As I always say: "For God´s sake, Legalize the stuff!!"

timothy leery had a position at one of our prestigious universities, he got it by advocating drug use as a way to expand mental faculties.
there must be an element of truth in this.

I'm not judging anyone but "at first the rats got dumber but eventually the brain grew new neurons after a prolong period of use" means their brain got worse at first (neurons died) and then recovered. This means its not exactly good for your brain, despite the brains ability to recover.

The rats didn´t "get dumber" because their neurons died, that is your assumption. At the beggining weed induces lethargic behaviour but that is not because neurons die; that happens in alcohol, not weed. The lethargic behaviour is just a response of the nervous system from the contact with the THC molecule.
But it is a "natural lethargy", it just makes your heart beat faster, and more blood flows through your brain, therefore it becomes more oxygenated (have you noticed the effects of inhaling pure oxygen?) it is a very similar effect, if not the same.
Peace.

Even if weed is perfectly safe (which I think it can't be because of smoke setting in lungs) I wouldn't smoke it, because it makes people act stupid.

It's fun to act stupid sometimes, but acting stupid, and being stupid, are 2 entirely different things.

If you spend too much time in the cuckoos nest you become a cuckoo.
Happened with punks.

Define stupid (in this context).

Alcohol makes people act stupid, yet it's legal and people seem to think it's soooo much better than pot.

Of course it does, and I don't use it, and I'm not saying it's better than weed.

I'm not sure I want to waste my time to describe someone who's high on weed. We've all seen it.

What? Sitting on the couch eating chips and dip laughing at the show on TV? Uhhhh, yeah, very stupid. God for fucking bid that someone sits on the couch, munches on some snacks and watches TV.

If, as in my case, being high on weed inspires you and gives you the energy to spend up to 15 hours a day creating original music or writing novels, then I think you owe it to us to describe your version.

See post #3 above where I made the reference to Carl Sagan. Surely you know who he is. What your telling me is that he, an Astronomer and Astrobiologist, is stupid?
And if I didn't know any better, I would say that you are making stereotypical generalizations about pot smokers.

Critical thinking error - false authority. He's not a medical doctor, he's not a chemist, he's not a biologist.
Any way, think what you wish, I've said what I think. I don't give a rats' ass what you inhale.

Oh, and smoking weed lowels your reflexes/reaction time as well. I've seen that first hand and have been told by weed smokers as well.

It's not about being a false authority. He's not a medical doctor. He doesn't need to be. But to say that he's stupid, is stupid.
He wasn't a biologist, he was an ASTROBIOLOGIST. Read up on it a bit,
Astrobiology is a multidisciplinary field utilizing physics, biology, and geology as well as philosophy to speculate about the nature of life on other worlds
So my rhetoric is not about Carl Sagan arguing the effects and advantages of weed, I'm saying that he smoked weed regularly and said that it helped him with his ideas. If weed makes you stupid as you say, I highly doubt Mr. Sagan would have had the mental capacity to become an astrobiologist.

Nothing gets by you, does it? Of course it lowers your reflexes and reaction time. Count one more weed smoker that has told you that.
It's not really a big secret considering that the low reflex/reaction time is part of the reason people smoke pot. To relax. I wouldn't smoke weed, then go play a volleyball or flag football game. But if I wanted to just go sit on the couch and relax and do nothing for a while, there is nothing better for that than weed.
