self driving car

Good idea for anyone. But I have my doubts they can make a totally autonomous vehicle that can navigate lane changes, parking lots and any other situations that are not "cut and dry, stay in my lane" scenarios.

They can certainly make an autonomous vehicle that is better than people at those things. It will never be perfect, though.

Man is not perfect.
Does it not then follow that anything made by man must necessarily be imperfect ?

No. I mean, nothing is perfect, man-made or otherwise. The Sun will burn out. Orbits of planets decay. Satellites become tidally locked. Radioisotopes decay.

self driving car
great idea for blind people?
Well certainly not a none self driving

True story

Late one evening in Bali I was window shopping the streets when I saw a elderly - estimate late 70s - park his motorbike
Dismount
Fumble around the side of the motorbike
Find and extract his WHITE cane
Tap tap his way down the narrow alleyway

Took me a few moments to replay to make sure that I had seen what I had seen before I decide - Go back hotel

:)

I need to travel twice a month, there and back, ten hours with rest stops, and so I would love to just hop in the car and tell it to wake me when we arrive.

ne too
...............................
so the story goes
grand dad liked his spirits(not the kind you commune with)
and
much like Tam o' Shanter
he would stay after market, and drink with his friends in town into the wee hours
and then
somewhat inebriated
climb into the back of the wagon
whereupon, his horse would take him home(at least to the barn)
I would like a car as smart as grand dad's horse

When I moved to the bush that was my plan but I found out you need to be sober to control a horse and cart.
And perhaps it was not a good idea to plan how to maximise drunkenness.

The above most story likely had a lot to do with the horse's desire to go back to the barn?

Having no horse forced me unwillingly to go to various parties after , the pub closed and come home the following day or week.
I remember...we would go to the pub in Tenterfield and our group was cheerful and often the publican would call the local copper to get us out of there after closing and to go home offering the lame excuse that he could not sell anymore beer. I would go back with all of them to one girls house to drink and play guitar..her neighbour was the copper who would get us to leave the pub and so I thought how ironic, he moves us on to go home with us partying until day break next door.
I stayed there so often her kids thought I was their father.
She thought I was their father..I thought...did we drink all those beers and how did my guitar end up in the fridge.
I slept in my car rather than ..well you know. She was nice however I did tell her that I loved her once because I needed a ride home. I just wish she did not tell everyone as I feel somehow that it's my fault she quit her job...we could never taken that world cruise my boat was not up to it..she should have worked that out.
You know all this was back when I was young 55 going on 16.
These days I would put that chilli sauce than n my bag and enjoy it over the following days when all you had left for food was cornflakes.
Those kids now have their kids and none of them drink. I did all I could but....
They just won't learn.
Those were the days..I could jump the cue ball onto the cush have it roll all the way from the middle pocket to the bottom pocket drop down to pot the black for the win and be shouted more beer than I could drink for the show of bravery...fortunately I was always able to drink those free beers and not feel guilty for not accepting the gifts from addmiration offered as recognition that what they saw was impossible.
I felt I was making a difference showing that the impossible was manageable when you had taken your medicine.
Then there were the arm wrestles..no woman could beat me but it was fun holding their hand and looking into their eyes.. I never let them win and upset the assumption that men are superior to women...the men, they tried and lost confirming they had no idea how to win...and I love the suck up after their defeat ..those times were great...seeing the opponents eyes change...and the night I drank a bottle of chilli sauce to prove something ...simple folk they thought I was mad...but I got more chilli sauce than they did.

Who is the winner now.

And when you jump off the roof you won't hurt yourself if you drop and roll...some of them just could not get the drop and roll thing.
I told them how to do it so it's not my fault they hurt themselves.
And that guy who said he could hang from the rafters ..sure we said we would catch him if he fell but he fell before we had finished our beers..not our fault. The carton broke his fall but stuffed the beer cause from then on it fizzed all over when you openned a can.
Who says you can't ride a Harley indoors...anything is possible when you are bulletproof...when that knife was against my throat I knew he would back down. And he did the wimp...the wisdom of Tom foolery beats the pretenders every time. And the king hitters...they line you up...you can see the swing coming like for a minute or two...and to pull back and have them miss to the the screams of those watching...heck it's Friday night, where is my guitar... let's party.
The problem is you go out make friends drink with them and in twenty years they are dead and you have to find a new croud.

I have two horses and they are fun to watch. One is boss ...prevents the other having a drink..beautiful creatures...almost like humans.

I have some humans almost like pets but they are so much trouble...fortunately one of them won't talk to me so I support their independance and let them be...A happy result for me...they now great my house as if it were theirs..I can't lose.
Had a brown snake invade one of the house up North...the cat didn't attack it..they are a worry cause even a small one will kill you...the snake not the cat although that cat nearly finished me with a major mauling. It is a big cat..Norweigen Forrest cat ..but he is so beautiful...you just have to understand that he is very powerful if tweaked.
Had one dog killed by a snake recently.
I hope we can all live together and no one bites another.
The fires are under control but the smoke is deadly...life is great death is forever.

Owner. Just like now.
but the owner is not the one who caused the journey
the passenger is the one who chose to make the journey happen and take that particular route.

if the passenger had decided to take the buss the family away on holiday that were wiped out would be the fault of the passenger who chose to travel that day.

that logic is used for unlicensed vehicles causing accidents

incidentally
community's could pool a car for travel
such a car could be listed as owned by a charity
people pay the charity in tax deductible donations and the car gets to avoid sales tax on fuel and running costs.
equally who gets the blame when the self driving charity owned car wipes out the family on holiday ?

as this debate goes on and gets more technical
the value of the lifes lost becomes a mney game
the idea of compulsory insurance becomes a loss event as less and less people purchase vehicle insurance.
will the accident rate go down the the insurance premiums go down ?

no one will need a license to drive

the driver no longer becomes at fault for accidents

blade runner reality ...
all vehicles will become taxis
except for the super rich
cost of taxi fares will dominate wage rates as a cost

will people save and invest the money they dont spend buying a car on money to pay for the massive inflation in costs using taxis ?

how are insurance companys going to react to losing 50% of their income stream ?

but the owner is not the one who caused the journey
What does that have to do with it? A taxi driver who owns his cab didn't "cause the journey" - but he carries the insurance.
if the passenger had decided to take the buss the family away on holiday that were wiped out would be the fault of the passenger who chose to travel that day.
No, it would be the bus driver who hit the family and killed them.
as this debate goes on and gets more technical
the value of the lifes lost becomes a mney game
It has been that way for centuries.
how are insurance companys going to react to losing 50% of their income stream ?
By raising their rates of course.

What does that have to do with it? A taxi driver who owns his cab didn't "cause the journey" - but he carries the insurance.

so you are saying the person who causes the death & injury & loss should not be accountable ?

No, it would be the bus driver who hit the family and killed them.
the buss is self driven and didnt crash
the self driven car hired as a taxi service to take the person to their holiday is what has crashed killing the innocent family

why twist it ?
... ? failed to apply a general rule of accountable moral equity ...

If self driving cars could be programmed to deliver people to their location safer and more efficiently than a human can it may make a lot of sense to have them. Flying cars, if they come to be, may have to be self driving cars by design, considering flying is much harder than driving on a road.
