Cortés's conquest of the Aztec Empire has been greatly simplified in legend. The Aztecs were cruel masters of their conquered peoples, on a par with the Stalinists, the Nazis, the Khmer Rouge, and the other monsters of our era. When the Christian armies arrived, subjugated peoples queued up with great enthusiasm to enlist in their campaign to overthrow Aztec tyranny.
On the other hand, it took the Spaniards two centuries to conquer the Maya, who were not as reviled by their neighbors.
