What you do care about, is swearing at people. Evidence of this abounds - there is an abundance of clearly insulting material which is allowed and even encouraged so long as it does not contain profanity.

I think James has said that.
He does not want libraries to screen us out.
So clever, G-rated put downs are mostly ignored.

@ Me-Ki - *shrug* Phrases they are and, while some of them are somewhat... disgusting... in my honest opinion they are just as acceptable as "boot up yer ass". Granted, some of them I don't care to know just WHAT they mean... but meh

I think we are way past the library , but then again back in the early 80s that one library let a pedophile organization hold there meeting there so go figure what Libraries allow .

This is where it come back to the community.

Should I punish Nobody for starting a lame thread?
Yes. Unless it has a point. This one did.

Or maybe, in other threads, I might punish other people for making lame contributions. You know, like in A&C, when people were asked to go beyond simply listing a song or album title, and actually spend a few words explaining why they liked it? That sort of thing is asking too much of a good number of people.

Should we simply purge those folks?
Yes. At first you'll have to let them know what it is you're trying to achieve. In time, they'll know without being told.

And, of course, that sounds like something of a severe leap, but I'm trying to find a baseline.
That's where you're going wrong.
No child left behind, Tiassa? Is it working? The fix is in. Do you still defend it?
Tell me. You gut feeling, your instinct. Do you want to ban Gendanken again? Or do you feel you have to, given your guidelines?

Your turn: How should Sciforums aim higher? Is this the sole responsibility of the staff? What do you expect of the membership?
I expect enormity. I expect the future. I expect dreams.
I expect not to be bored. I expect to be able to come on here any hour, any minute, any day and find something worth responding to. I expect to be able to do that without scrolling through a hundred posts containing nothing but dross. I expect to be able to do that without searching for one or two posters who have caught my eye.

I expect you to know what to get rid of and what to keep. I expect you to be a dictator. I expect you to be ruthless. I expect you to encourage creativity, intellect, and entertainment. I expect you to know what those things are.

I expect you to recognise what is inspiring without confining that only to your own viewpoint or experience.

I expect you to be a pioneer. To dispense with numbers, to dispense with those who have nothing to offer. I expect you to have vision, and the courage and strength to enforce it.

I expect a site which has, and has always had, the framework for something truly original and groundbreaking within its grasp.
I expect you to take your balls in your hand and remember you have them.

I expect too much.

That help?

Man walks into a bar. Gorgeous bar girl. Stunning.
He says "Gimme a crocodile sandwich. And make it snappy."
She slaps him. Security throws him out.

She laughs. Sends the order to the chef.

What's the difference?

So you agree: the sole concern is obscenity, and the issue of insult is completely tangential to that. SciForums does not, in effect, have any policy against insults whatsoever. Insults which do not contain profanity can be reliably expected not to arouse any moderator attention, nor result in any sanctions or other administrative response, and JamesR's statement:

JamesR said:
It's the intent that counts. If the intent is to insult, then we'll do you for insulting other members.

is patently false and, presumably, an intentional deception.

I could go further and make the case that (non-profane) insults are actually encouraged and welcomed here, but we'll leave that for another day.

Now that's the sound of rust flaking.

Enormity? Not when content is sprinkled with alum and reduced to non-threatening pantomime.

Dreams? Not in the current somnambulism where even the instinct of self-defense is tranquilized for the sake of not offending bums at a library?

Did you read that James R. will not permit profanity so as to allow Sciforums to be loaded at libraries?

Care to know who has the time to squat at a library reading Gendanken beating the pulse back into a Marquis?

A bloody street bum named Rufus.
F*ck that sh*t.

Yes. At first you'll have to let them know what it is you're trying to achieve. In time, they'll know without being told.
That's just it.
While it's not as bad as it used to be with the housewives chatting a thread up 6 pages in 2 minutes, its hard to keep track of who's saying what about where.

I don't know what it is.

Some of the blandest opinions are contributed, in the most respectful, user-friendly, pat-on-the-back terminology, followed by a most intense "IMHO" as a qualifier.

At that point, you're left wondering: now what the fuck was his honest opinion again?

Take that Kittamaru guy. I honestly have no clue what he's talking about.

Tell me. You gut feeling, your instinct. Do you want to ban Gendanken again? Or do you feel you have to, given your guidelines?
While I can appreciate not being splat with one of those yellow spitballs they call 'warnings' around here, Tessie and I know why he's already threatened to ban me.

It's already happened, Oh my brother.

To wit-- I even have some member named Chimpkin asking that I 'tone' down the level of some thread she's not even contributing to.

That's the surrealism of it: the moderators have achieved that curious alchemy of turning members into moderators.

Sciforums is a giant Motherator.

That is Motherator Giant to you . She contributed plenty . She came to my defense as I recall . When you tried to lump Me up good . I like a good beating . To bad you got bored trying to beat Me . . Oh hurts so good . Some times love don't feel like it should , Oh it hurts so good . Slap it . Right there . Yeah I like that . Slap it good .

How did you say it Wisp Me away with a lovely eye lash . Sara's eye lash

Not gendy, but perhaps I may contribute that Sciforums is interesting in it's diversity and that the inimitable gustav does have his awesome moments. :D

For which remark, I may well be eviscerated and filleted by gendanken, for my presumptuous manner and conciliatory tone.

Diplomacy, the art of civilized warfare. I observe that between bouts of verbal bile, that gendanken is capable of some rather sophisticated word structure and exchange when conversing with posters on various other threads.

you are a fucking idiot
that would be the only thing praiseworthy about sci

Replying to your own post......

An interesting strategy which puts the response in a unique context, lol....

I did? mmmkay...
I did note you had mangled another member's name deliberately...and if it's the thread I'm thinking of, I wanted to contribute to the thread...but as you seemed intent on turning it into nothing but a festival of flung feces...
I was actually hoping we might be able to talk substantively about social issues...nope, didn't happen.

You bait your hooks, it's up to the baited whether they bite. I figure you're skilled enough to find ways to get at your victims within strictures and, oddly enough, I look forward to seeing you do it.
I observe you are one of the best baiters I've seen...I'd go so far as to call you a master baiter.;)

I guess he finally found a way to insult someone without getting in trouble :D

One would have to be some sort of illiterate ingrate not to have realized that non-profane insults do not land people in trouble around here, a long time ago.
