Gawdzilla Sama have you read Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy? It's a master class in advanced colonization and eventual areformation of Mars.

They use many of the methods you referred to here, including digging very deep holes (using autonomous robots).

Another possibility is to inhabit the lava tubes. We've seen "skylights" where the "roof" of the tube has collapsed. There is a proposal to inhabit some of those. Solid shelter and they've been there since the Moon had liquid lava. Line up mirrors on the surface with mounts to turn them to reflect the sun down into the tube farms.

Rock was in the mini-series, at least the last one, "Meet the Martians" or some such. (Kids ask "where are the Martians?" He takes them to a pool and points downward. "There they are!" The kids look down and see their own reflections.

Yeah. There was a awful lot of handwaving in that series, but it was a good one overall.

I was trying to think of the appropriate word for that kind of remark - homily seems to fit it best. A platitudinous or inspirational saying. The religious instruction origins of the term fits too; don't let facts or reason turn people aside from their faith in the worthiness and achievability of Mars colonization, yay. To the faithful failure can always be a consequence of lack of faith and support - and opposition - of unbelievers. Not that I am opposed, I just don't see any chance of viability.

Should I go over the many ways Mars colonization now is utterly unlike the development of powered flight in the time of the Wright brothers? Aside from the obvious confirmation bias of that example?

"They laughed at Einstein, too, you know!"... and the confirmation bias of that one too.

When it comes to Mars the putting aside of basic skepticism for the sake of the dream is the norm. I think the problems run far deeper and are more tangible than excessive pessimism of critics. As thought experiment goes it is fine and fun. As an article of faith it is ripe for making fun.
