My son at 14 wants to be a marine and kill Osamas in the desert

My son is all but ready to join the Marines and go to foreign lands and kill Osamas in the name of liberty. I did not instill this desire in him; I believe it's his own opinion. He is all but a Rambo in the Boy Scouts currently and can't wait to go out and kill enemy Arabs in the name of liberty.

I am looking for your thoughts on this matter. I did not plan this to be his future but he is all for it; he has been on an "an American rant" for over a year now- proud to wear the flag etc... (which leads me to believe he may be Marine material).

Thanks.

Sounds like he's got a vocation.
He's lucky. He can set his sights on what he wants.
Try to encourage him to set his aims high.
Someone has got to become a General.

The killing aim is not so good, but he's only 14.
Try cancelling Fox News.

That's a good idea, Sam.
It might put him off his idea, or it might not, but it would clear away any Romantic notions of combat.

All you can do is inform and advise on this subject. Push too hard and you'll push him even further on the road you find so distasteful.

Good idea by Sam.

It's fine to feel strongly about being loyal to your country, but at some point he'll need to learn that in real life it's not all about kicking butt and being the good guy.

We are not the good guy when 1/3 of the world HATES us.

Umm...Osama is dead already, tough luck...

Get him to go for Navy Cadets, or JROTC. Suggest him applying for United States Naval Academy eventually.

Should explain that only a small fraction of the military are on the front lines. over three fourths of the military are in supporting types of rolls. There's about 150,000 troops involved in Iraq and Afghanistan and they are now coming home slowly. There's over 2 million people in the total armed forces.

Any effective armed force needs a large auxiliary to support its combat troops.

Umm...you might want to fix that before he face the Judge Advocate General or the ICC for War Crimes...

I strongly agree Shogun. A lot of my family memebers served in the military and considered it as serving their country. Not as a golden opportunity to kill people

I like SAM's idea...let him see vets who've been blown up at.

Boy sounds like he's acquired some anger issues.

Dude, where do you think Marine Corps officers come from? They come from the Naval Academy.

He is permabanned so I stopped replying to him, but just for the record:

Navy Sea Cadets is apparently like JROTC but better and more naval oriented.

Yeah s lot of the Marine Corps Officers came from USNA, but there is also OCS and NROTC.

Same, I have a lot of extended in the military, they joined to protect and defend the interests of Canada and to protect humanity.

I'm planning on going to RMC for the same reason.
