Most powerful empire in history?

I think the most powerful empire was the british colonial empire. come on... these guys ruled almost half the world for almost 200 years
 
British Empire. By far, they colonized S. Africa, Taiwan, India, America, Canada, Europe, the middle east. Romans never controlled that much territory.

Well it depends really how you define an empire. Are you talking about a physical empire like the British or Mongols had? Or a psychological empire which is created by the spread of a particular style of thought? Or a linguistic empire, such as Chinese or English?
 
one thing about the brotish empire compared especially to the roman empire and to an extent the greek empire was that the british empire was very short lived

Neither was it very respected, except of course for the British themselves.
 
Nobody liked the Mongols either.

Everybody underestimates the value of respect, because that plays a huge defining role in the perception for generations to come.
 
most respected the romans as they intergrated themselves rather well than totally take over like the brits
 
First just to point out i just registered just to have my say in this long ongoing debate .so onwards to flames .

1. the British Empire. although the sun might never set on it . did not indeed Cover a lot of territory .. !.. Canada For the british .. was .. eastern Ontario !
America .. Well lets just say it was not 48 states . Africa.. hmmmm parts of Eqypt ..Coastal Western Africa .. Some coasts on the east .. ! as for Australia.. well they had Complete Authority over ..whereever they could go but they didn't really have a lot of area developed did they ? The only region where they had a decent size landsize or population under them was India . So the Empire really was India in terms of population or area.

2. My Contestent is present day China ! after all Which Other nation/Empire has had 1/3 of the world (population) under its Control thru out History ? Some might argue there was this nation or that .. but even the Romans never had an inkling of an influece of the nations living in South America did they ?

So .. Whatda ya all say ?

although china is a country now it did use to be an empire made up of several provinces
