I've been running across videos of natural disasters from around the world, and thought I'd post this one taken of a landslide in Norway. Can't even imagine the horror of watching my home float away, and then disappear into the sea. -_O


Where global warming is expected to increase, bringing about heavier rain events, this may trigger more landslides throughout the world.

A few years ago we had a bad storm and there was a French woman living in a caravan (in a caravan site) next to the sea.

In the morning she was found dead in the caravan which was blown onto the rocks below.

Not a huge cliff but it did for her.

Think I may have seen that footage of the Norwegian houses.About 6 or 7 years ago ,was it?

I think sometimes people get taken out to sea when the ice they are fishing on breaks off....


When I was in Norway I took the train from Oslo to the North (in Winter)

.When we got to the North (Tromso),the weather turned warm and there were avalanches ahead on the track.

We were transfered to a boat from then on to continue the journey up to the very North (Larvik)

It was a strange sensation to hear the rain outside the train when everywhere was snow (and night),but it was the rain that caused the disruption.

That sounds terrifying!

So, these are ''caravans?'' In the states, these would be known as manufactured/mobile homes, looks similar.

 
I drove up the mountain from San Pedro Sula (Honduras) to the Mayan ruins at Copan. It was at night in the rain as I was driving and there was a small section where the pavement gave way to dirt and gravel and then became pavement again.

I didn't think much about it as the whole drive has been tiring, have to go slow and stop when cows decided to just lay on the road (for the heat I guess). The next morning we checked out the ruins at Copan and then drove down the winding mountain road. When I was almost at the bottom I looked up at the road that we had just been on an hour or so before and one of two lanes was GONE! It had slide down the mountain.

That's my only slide story:)

I don't live on a cliff (I do live on a hill though):) There is a place where I used to go (scuba) diving in a suburb of Seattle. There is a cliff nearby and a whole street was closed for a year or so after a couple of houses slid down the cliff after a lot of raining.

In 3rd world countries it's more common on mountainous roads just because the standards and techniques for cutting (and undercutting) roads though the mountains are much more lax than here. The passes around Seattle are frequently closed for hours at a time in the winter though due to avalanches.

I was hiking, in the winter, to a place called Lake Serene (and it is serene in the summer) and when I got to the lake I heard a roar and looked at the shear mountain face above the other side of the lake and two avalanches were letting go.

Stuff happens in nature:)

I shouldn’t say landslides come on suddenly, although some seem to appear that way, many landslides have subtle warnings. In the video I posted above about the landslide in Washington, a nearby road had given out according to residents in the area prior to the cliff giving way, so that looks like an ominous warning of things to come. Curious if one lives in an area prone to landslides, if like hurricane forecasts in the southeast US, if there is anything similar? (if geologists can predict weeks in advance if a landslide may occur in a given place?) So, residents have time to evacuate...

Do you mean for predicting landslides? I’m referring to something akin to the weather networks alerting people to evacuating an area in the event of hurricanes, for example - are there well-organized networks in place to warn people of possible landslides?

There are usually signs. In the case I mentioned the houses are already build on a cliff, it had rained more than usual in a short period of time and there had been some movement in the area. It's rare that houses slide down a cliff without the residents having any warning.

What is more common is that they had to move out, engineers come in an try to save the house and then eventually they can't stabilize things and the house slides down the hill/cliff.

Exactly. It's usually a matter of building houses where there shouldn't be houses. Just like building houses in flood plains or where there are frequent wild fires.

97% of the worlds population do not own a home

and now your stuck in the calamity of your own class perspective

think about how media will suddenly report the death of a
single police officer
or single politician
or single celebrity

but millions are dying every day

the concept of large personal desires and goals set into a nice expensive looking home
if it was owned
being destroyed
goes directly into aspects of personal self worth and life values

but to agrarian people who live in huts made of clay straw sticks and tin...

its a different reality
they know people who are dying from lack of medical services
that is a normal part of their reality

its a bit of porn in reality
the porn of watching material symbology

so its new material
a fresh face & body
a new person
a new idea
a new thing to cause a massive emotional reaction like a new drug

the sudden shift from the projected ideology of
"having everything"
to suddenly

when you dig in to this subject
excuse the pun
you will find often slip areas have been ignored for money purposes by local government for many years
additionally some slips may be subject to natural land divisions resulting in impact to land boundary ownership issues
cost etc money money ...
extracting the hard truth facts can be difficult and deliberately hidden by many different interested partys
additionally
no one wants to get the high tech inspections even though the technology is there because most of the time it involves a result from the inspection to need to spend money with no profit return.
now look at housing developers & all the politicians in bed with them financially

how many millions live in refugee camps and on land they dont own and have ilegaly built houses on ?
millions

its quite normal behavior in many countrys to build illegal houses on un defined land mostly owned as public land
its quite a hot topic

in this latest landslide the vast majority of houses
if you can call them houses
will be illegally built tin huts
on government land

now compare that with those who own the land and have insurance policy's and secured fixed incomes

its a VAST difference

watching all that you own be wiped out
(no government food or social services and no insurance and now cant work, no money cant replace anything and you didn't own the land even if it was still left as a title and the government wont buy you a new land title anywhere)
versus
watching all your material possessions be destroyed so you have to go out and replace them

the subjective "horror" of the different circumstances is vastly different

You're not discussing landslides, you're (again) attempting to analyze members here, whom you know nothing about. Reading into threads and posts, things that simply aren't there. ''I can't imagine the horror of watching my home float away'', isn't a classist comment. You're making it into a classist comment, not sure why. But this thread isn't to discuss what you posted, it's the earth science sub-forum. Please stop derailing threads with this stuff.
