I'm getting a Macintosh ASAP...

This is a simple consideration... my dads CD burner once broke, had he not had a warrenty they would've charged him 290 dollars to install a new drive. This should basically tell you Apples products, while supposedly good, are simply to expensive to maintain in the long haul. Add to that the fact Vista is coming out an your ideas concerning OS X make little practical sense. Why not wait awhile for a Leopard VS Vista comparison?

Anyway I would certainly not pay for a Macintosh computer, they are far from perfect when hardware like a burner costs 300 to replace.

I already know this. I was making a distinction between Macintosh and the Apple computer...

There is no distinction. Apple makes Macs. Hence a Macintosh is the Apple computer. :)
(or did you mean MacOS and Macintosh the machine?)

Maybe I'd rather not have to download everything I want?

Very understandable. However, equivalent bundles are also available from your various brand name Wintel vendors.

Thanks, but I was thinking of other things.

Like? I've had enough experience with Macs to note that many of the activities that Apple claims to be easier on a Mac really isn't

Maybe the general scheme is the same, but I see them as very different from each other.

Not really. They're different enough so that MS and Apple can't sue each other out of existence. Keep in mind we're talking about the user interface only. MacOS and Windows are completely different codewise

I already know quite well what a Mac looks like.

Very cute aren't they :)

Again, I know that a Windows is ever vulnerable.

And I highly doubt I'm gonna end up using Windows more often. I would be on a Mac as much as possible if I had one. I'm just getting a Windows OS on there as well because I don't want to give it up entirely. Choices, see?

Whether or not you use MacOS more, Windows is still in use on your system. Using Windows less just reduced the probability that a weakness will be exploited, but your beef about Windows' security weakness will still exist.

A Mac will have available for it a productivity suite, graphics programs, audio and video editors...all the office-ish tools. However with respect to choices:

1. There won't be many different titles to choose from
2. Macs aren't really in the gaming arena (but if you don't care about games well *shrug*)

MacOS is hardly Fort Knox secure itself. Other than witnessing OS9 and X crashing multiple times, freezing, dropping off the network, there are folks out there that hack macs, they're just way outnumbered by the windows-armed villians.

For the price of a MacPro, I could build you a fearsome rig.
Unless you use OSX, you're pay a premium for nothing.

It's just like paying premium price for an iPod. The iPod is sexy, it's interface is very original. However Creative and Sony devices produce on-par sound for less dollars.

The only valid reason I see for buying a Mac is aesthetics. Why do you think the Mac guy in the ads is so sexy and the PC guy is so dumpy looking? The marketeers expect you to like Macs based on the appearance and confidence and coolness of the hot guy.

So can I, you can spend nearly the same amount to build your own but it just isnt gonna have the features of a MacPro.

One of the coolest things about a Mac Pro is you just plug a hard drive into it and there are 4 drive bays, there are many otherr things but i dont want to keep typing.

Your home built system would be good too.

sderenzi,
Vista is like the latest flavor poptart. It's easy to cook, somewhat tasty but not for those with fine culinary tastes. It lacks substances and brings no real innovation to the table.

Enterprise-D,

It does have a good interface, but the ipods popularity is due mainly to its 'coolness' factor. Its as if people are embarrassed to wear something that doesn't have white earbuds coming out of it.

John99,
I could get a tower with more than four drive bays. Also, I love installing and configuring the system to my exact specifications.

What other featues does a Mac Pro offer?

Another thing here is freedom. It may seem intangible, but when using linux or BSD, you know that the developers are in debt to the community, not some fat-faced shareholders.

My two penneth is that my gf's bro bought a Mac laptop, and it broke just out of warranty. He then went and bought a new one, which broke within two months, so he sent it away for repair, and it came back with the same problem, so he sent it away, and it in the first six months of ownership, it was away for repair for more than three months.

This was probably just bad luck, most Mac owners seem fairly happy with reliability, but the customer service seems lacking when things do go wrong.

Intel senior vice president Pat Gelsinger has described using a Mac as a "religious experience".

Gelsinger told Hexus that he has owned a Mac since the inclusion of the Intel chip, and that he enjoys using the machine so much that he is now purchasing one for his wife. He also intends to buy a copy of Vista – and Parallels – to run on it.

The OS and the machine. I know the software, not the hardware, is what's vulnerable. I understand that if I use a Windows on an Apple machine, it will be exactly as vulnerable as on a PC. I have no trouble comprehending this.

I know the code is different.

I'm not looking for much in productivity suites and such anyway.

As far as I know, Vista will be a resource hog and a security nanny. I don't want that.

Art fag.

Anyway, from what I've been reading, much that's in Vista has already been tried and tested, ironed out and refined in X over the course of X's five year, real-world experience -- inotherwords, been there done that.

Vista is only a resource hog if your machine is old. OSX Leopard would be the same sort of hog on an old Mac.
My own IT dept and a friend's as well are testing Vista now (ignoring the multitudes of reviews online for now)...and Vista seems to be quite "smart" in install. It detects your PC specs and suggests the appropriate flavour of Vista. I will admit that we're both using P4 HT machines with 1GB and 2GB of RAM (Dell and clone PCs).

What's a security nanny?

So...athelwulf...if you aren't looking for much in productivity suites, games...and graphics are now on an equal footing...and if you realise that firewalls and antivirus programs are recommended for all platforms in spite of differences in probability of attack...and "common tasks" are easy on OSX and XP/Vista...I still don't understand why a Mac.

Quite correct. Except my Zen has Creative white earbuds  :D

Don't care for apple because of price mainly. Looks nice and is a stable machine, but the premium you pay is just not worth it.

Windows..... the same. The premium microsoft charges for their OS is absolutely ridiculous. $400 plus for pro version of Vista???? Are you nuts???? You can buy an entire pc for that price and they want to double it just for the OS?

I run Ubuntu Linux with no probs at all and have never looked back. Free software, free updates, no spyware, precious few virus' and my laptop looks better and runs faster than it ever did with windows installed. Plus with wine and crossoffice, you can run windows apps if necessary. (I personally have found that there is a linux version for pretty much everything you would ever want to do on win or apple.)

Just me though, it's your money...

Try and run XMen Legends II on Linux. :)

Linux is only viable if you wanna have no fun on your PC. PS I tried Ubuntu, it locked up my machine on install. Mandriva worked smoothly.

But wow...400US for Vista Pro...ouch. I'll stick with XP for now :bugeye:

what 400$? That's going to be 600 € then when it hits europe.

They are not as vulnerable to viruses and shit as Windows, so I don't have to worry so much about virus programs that slow everything down.

You can get a Zonealarm firewall/antivirus everything for $20, so paying 60% or whatever more doesn't make sense just in this regard. I won't comment on the other points...

I should have said that I do use xp on my desktop computer, linux on laptop. If I didn't use yahoo music and gaming on my desktop I would switch it to linux as well.

Ubuntu has worked flawlessly on my laptop and I use it mostly for internet and office apps ( as well as image. Between The Gimp and Picassa for linux, i can do anything with still images on linux)

Mostly, I'm fed up with corporations that have become WAY to proud of their products and figure they don't have work on improving them.
