How is information stored in the brain?

I recommend the final chapter of Nick Lanes book, "Life Ascending" it discusses brain injury and how very specific that can be. Damaged neurons are not repaired so the brain has to use other neurons in order to complete tasks. That could be something like speech or some sort of movement like walking.
The brain has to "re learn" and that can be successful, partially or not at all if there is too much damage.

But you can remember the smell of popcorn even when there is no popcorn at the moment.
Yes. Im simply pointing out that "the smell of popcorn" is not stored somewhere as a discrete memory in the brain, waiting to be loaded like a file.

So what prompted the brain to simulate the smell and image of popcorn?
Whatever. Perhaps as simple as someone saying "Can you recall the smell of popcorn?"

Are we talking Tarzan the Ape Man and Mowgli from Jungle Book? Or do we have any real-word examples?

I would just as soon stick to analyzing non-fictional people.

Doesn't everyone think in pictures/images? Many of my thoughts are like that, especially if I am analyzing how a mechanical object works. Or, oddly enough, if I am analyzing a piece of recorded music.

Couple of things:

1. Most people think in pictures, yes. That wasn't the issue. The issue was most people also have inner voices. but that requires language. What about people who don't have language? Yes, they surely think in pictures, or in skits (i.e. moving pictures).

2. My wife is at the opposite end of the spectrum. She thinks in words, not pictures. If asked to picture a beach, she is unable to, unless she is first given - or assigns herself - descriptive words like sunny, sandy, hot, blue sky, etc.

Sorry. With half the conversation in Russian it can be difficult to follow. Anyway, I would think that everyone thinks like that before they acquire a language.

But Mowgli children cannot speak. And even learning to walk upright is difficult or impossible for them.
I'm not sure what your point is. A moment ago you are asking if children without language think in images. Yes, that's quite likely.

Yes, the brain gets less plastic over time. The best time to learn new languages is as a child, while still developing. Adults can do it but it's more work.
