Yo turn Akira into a live action would be hard indeed. Actually I think the word hard would be a understatement......incedentally. The new movie that is out "House of the Dead", is this movie based on the video game? Cause if it is then I think that directors are doing the "Video game to a Movie" idea's a injustice. Either do a decent film or pick a game that would really strive as a movie. Anyone else feel this way?

Right you are dude. The movie is after the video game and it didn't have much funding behind it, 12 or so million i believe. We all would want a decent game to movie conversion and vice versa but these movies and games are pumped out for quick cash.
At 12 million even if the movie makes a paltry 30+ million then the studio wins big. They don't care about the mastry of filmmaking, they care about the ka-ching.
Wha. . .? How can people be hating Sailor Moon? It's campy and cute, I love it. The manga isn't that bad either, but oh well maybe I'm just being a girl.

Slayers is a good fantasy comedy and not to mention a classic. Lina Inverse is an anime staple everyoen should be familiar with.
Urusei Yatsura (Those Obnoxious Aliens) is the first series by Rumiko Takahashi (creator of Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha, Rumic World), it is also a classic, has many Japanese style word play jokes that require extensive footnotes to understand but helps overall in a person getting the jokes in other anime. It's about a perverted boy and the jealous alien princess who loves him.
Pet Shop of Horrors is really good, the stories are unrelated shorts, they are incredibly creepy and make me feel weird after watchign them.
Boogiepop Phantom is very mysterious and interesting, I've only seen about 5 episodes, want more.

Lupin the third is incredible. If you pass on this show due to it's dated animation then you deserve to miss this fine show.

I like the plot and structure of Lupin the Third but everything else in the show is either out dated or crap.
They are but Spielberg would never touch that.
Ok so the animation isn't exactly on par with Cowboy Bebop or the likes. I personally couldn't stand the show first but after one night of unending tedium i sat through a whole episode and i was impressed.

Has anyone ever watched an anime and just felt that they'd seen it all before? Even if you can't think of an example offhand it still seems like you've watched it a million times?
This happened when I watched Fushigi Yugi... nothing about it was even remotely entertaining... it all just seemed cliche somehow.

All of Pioneers anime are basically have the thing, from Dual to Tenchi muyo, no surprises watching their animes as you know how the whole story goes anyways.

I'm told Tenchi Muyo had several different series that were written by different people... the piecewise nature of its creation may lead to some inconsistency, wouldn't be the first time if it did.
How about Perfect Blue? Everyone told me that it would be really harsh and disturbing and complicated... then it wasn't. Yeah, it had some stabbing and stuff, but every anime has the stabbing and the shooting and the coughing up of the blood, so that wasn't really a shocker.
It was just a regular psychodrama with an unreliable point of view (or whatever the proper cinematic term is for an "unreliable narrator"). I have never found the "unreliable narrator" to be a good device in books or movies or video games - in Final Fantasy VII I was just about ready to throw a shoe at the TV when it turned out that Cloud had just made up his whole story and then forgotten that he was lying.

Don't get me wrong, there's been plenty of the ol' Japanese cartoons that I've liked, but that one wasn't worth opening the box for in my opinion.

The "murder" scene is depicted as having been done by the singer, not her agent, which means that at the end of the movie we're supposed to go back and reassess what we saw to mean that it was the agent but she thought she was the singer. This notwithstanding that there was another, non-crazy person in the room who would presumably have seen her the way she was and not as the way she was depicted on screen.
As a result the on-screen narrative gets confused as to whether the thing that's being depicted is real, or the hallucination of the singer, or the hallucination of her agent. This is a kind of second-order misinformation where even the misinformation is not coherent.
I mean, that's like that episode of Poirot where he pulls that cheese sandwich that you've never seen before out of his backside at the end and tells everyone that the freakin' sandwich proves that THAT guy did it.
