Are you choosing to ignore the facts, or are you just anti-American? I've already given numerous reasons why we couldn't wait, why we had to act as soon as possible. True, the atomic bombs were horrible and killed around 230,000 people, but that's nothing compared to the number of deaths that would have come had we waited. The Japanese treated the civilians in their overseas empire brutally (in the notorious Nanking Massacre, 370,000 Chinese civilians were murdered in just three weeks http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanking_Massacre), and like I said, there was still lots of fighting going on in southern and southeastern Asia. And then there was the military coup in Japan attempting to prevent Japanese surrender:
The United States strategic bombing of Japan took place between 1942 and 1945. In the last seven months of the campaign, a change to firebombing tactics resulted in great destruction of 67 Japanese cities, as many as 500,000 Japanese deaths and some 5 million more made homeless. Emperor Hirohito's viewing of the destroyed areas of Tokyo in March 1945, is said to have been the beginning of his personal involvement in the peace process, culminating in Japan's surrender five months later..

Japan was destroyed before the big bombs.......?
One thousand six hundred and sixty-seven tons of bombs were dropped on Tokyo in the first attack. The chosen areas were saturated. Fifteen square miles of Tokyo's most densely populated area(civilians) were burned to the ground(march '45).
'Total civilian casualties in Japan, as a result of 9 months of air attack, including those from the atomic bombs, were approximately 806,000'
This is taken from the United States Strategic Bombing Survey, published in 1946..
"The talks by the Japanese ambassador in Moscow and with the Soviet ambassador in Tokyo did not make progress. On 20 June the Emperor, on his own initiative, called the six members of the Supreme War Direction Council to a conference and said it was necessary to have a plan to close the war at once, as well as a plan to defend the home islands. The timing of the Potsdam Conference interfered with a plan to send Prince Konoye to Moscow as a special emissary with instructions from the cabinet to negotiate for peace on terms less than unconditional surrender, but with private instructions from the Emperor to secure peace at any price. Although the Supreme War Direction Council, in its deliberations on the Potsdam Declaration, was agreed on the advisability of ending the war, three of its members, the Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister and the Navy Minister, were prepared to accept unconditional surrender, while the other three, the Army Minister, and the Chiefs of Staff of both services, favored continued resistance unless certain mitigating conditions were obtained...so the Japanese were talking peace in June...? MURDER...IN THE NAME OF PEACE LOOL
..Admiral William Leahy stated in I Was There, "My own feeling is that being the first to use it (the atomic bomb) we had adopted an ethical standard common to the Barbarism of the Dark Ages. I was not taught to make war in that fashion, and wars cannot be won by destroying women and children."......:bugeye:
..General Curtis LeMay, chief of the Air Forces, p.334, "The war would have been over in two weeks without the Russians entering and without the atomic bomb. PRESS INQUIRY: You mean that, sir? Without the Russians and without the atomic bomb? LeMay: The atomic bomb had nothing to do with the end of the war at all." September 29, 1945, statement.
I am reading the facts and sorry dude but I do not condone MASS MURDER OF CIVILIANS in any shape or form or listen to any excuse for it....I could post 5 whole pages on reasons why there was no need to drop the bombs whether you could accept those reasons is another matter...
Look into the Chinese stats. They're much lower than Brit or American. As well, they are (admittedly so by the Chinese press) not a fair sampling. Remember the vast majority of the population is poor and access to many of these areas is difficult at best.Well I'll stick by what "Chen Chunming", 'a nutritional expert at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention' said as he made sense.
I can and I do. They were not hot. Elizabeth Hurley, though...What about the Spice Girls? You can't deny that they (were) hot.

Believe me I've seen ALL of these statistics. And I'm not saying it was a wonderful thing for us to have done. But I am saying that if we hadn't done all of that Japan would never have surrendered. The Allies had already agreed upon nothing less than unconditional surrender, and if we couldn't get that, the war would continue.
Also, if you want to know the reason we had to drop the atomic bombs, read the book Flyboys by James Bradley.

Hey yall,
I've only been living here in my "passport country" for the past three and a half years, and I'm beginning to wonder if I've got some kind of innate dislike of typical Americans that have only known life in this country. I mean, at least in the Midwest, between a very geocentric mindset and a general culture that just has a kind of fake feel to it, I'm in need of reminders of why I should find my countrymen pleasant to be around. Well, not like I'm in dire need or anything, but it came to me as a neat question to put up here, I'm kind of curious how Americans and everyone else will respond.
Believe me I've seen ALL of these statistics. And I'm not saying it was a wonderful thing for us to have done. But I am saying that if we hadn't done all of that Japan would never have surrendered. ]
Why do wealthy Chinese parents let their kids eat anything they want? .
..Fast-food lovers consumed more fats, sugars and carbohydrates and fewer fruits and non-starchy vegetables than youngsters who didn't eat fast food. They also consumed 187 more daily calories, which likely adds up to about six pounds more per year, the study found.
No time to cook Astrup said the huge portions at most fast-food restaurants and the high caloric density of their food were probably responsible for the obesity link.
Because even small amounts of fast food contain lots of calories, people consume a great deal without feeling full and soon get hungry again and eat more, he said.
The Observer article is, unfortunately, a rarity. Most journalists and editors seem to prefer to crank up the attacks on soft targets — the unlovable McDonald's or Coca Cola — rather than expose the dirt that has been swept under the carpet of many parts of urban Britain. The data show quite clearly that lower income families and those living in socially deprived neighbourhoods are far more at risk from becoming obese than the middle and upper classes. A report from the National Statistics office notes:
"Obesity is linked to social class, being more common among those in the routine or semi-routine occupational groups than the managerial and professional groups. The link is stronger among women. In 2001, 30 per cent of women in routine occupations were classified as obese compared with 16 per cent in higher managerial and professional occupations."
Pinocchio's Hoof,
Japan has moved on and become the great country and friend to U.S that is is today, there is no reason for you to pretend to care. I still say this has something to do with Nazi Germany that you are keeping secret.

I don't see Japan sending troops to Iraq though...
They did, under pressure from the same Americans who dismantled their military and made them sign an agreement against ANY offensive war. Since Japan has no "military" anymore they sent their civilian SDF (Self Defense Forces) to Iraq. http://www.wsws.org/articles/2003/dec2003/japa-d16.shtml
Which totally sums up American (il)logic
Reason to like America?
Perhaps a representation of all countries of the world but on a smaller scale.
