NY Resolution - 'Redemption' month

Oh, so we don't even have to say it anymore?
I suppose that makes sense, the board was declining rapidly when I left, no reason to think it plateau'd afterwards.

Wait.
We can still say nigger, can't we?
I would think that we're just not allowed to use it as an insult? It's not very imaginative, you know.

By the way, t'is funny. Up until form 10 at school we used to use the word 'niggers' in classes as a general term referring to Africans (geography, literature, language, etc.). Then at form 10 our geography teacher told us that it's not polite anymore to say 'nigger' and that we instead should use the word 'African'. We totally didn't get it, because saying African was the same as saying nigger, never mind that we hadn't actually seen a black person in our lives.

Thank you.

What I'd like to say is for everyone to hear. I hold no malice towards this forum or any other (well maybe LoveShack.org) and when I look back on the long history I had here I realize it was enjoyable. The forum has been something to entertain and stimulate my imagination in ways I really couldn't understand or perceive (at the time). My path as sderenzi was really a test, it allowed me to see what an internet forum was like and how tolerant the people on it could be.

As sderenzi I really didn't take anything to seriously, after-all I had some pretty bizarre and unusual ideas I had to sort out. I posted quite alot of unusual things and many of you participated fondly because my topics were outside the norm (for a forum of this kind). I'll admit I didn't really think what I was doing was wrong, it just seemed like something to pass time.

When James R originally banned me it was due to my silly threads (really just stories making fun of members) and the outlandish nature of my personality. Adding to that I specifically requested it, well, we can't fault the old boy for actually doing it! So when he did ban me for intruding on the forums over-all style I wasn't to surprised, he wasn't a mean man or cruel just moderating this place. He could hardly know me or who I really was outside this realm, and one certainly couldn't expect him too.

As we all know forums are a place people become different, they show sides of their own mind they might not otherwise share in the open. With such an unusual and amazing frontier how can if be any wonder problems will sometimes arise. After having visited other forums I've found this one is for the most part accepting, unless you are completely brazen in your behavior.

So after my trail as sderenzi ended I began a new one as darksidZz, and while this was (at first) just a way to post some more normal ideas of mine it eventually began on a similar path as that of sderenzi. I know my membership was threatened here and that Fraggle helped to persuade them to keep me, mostly because he felt sorry for me. I can say knowing that fact upset me greatly, but I can understand it too. As a person I would not argue anyone here is a jerk or purposely attacking me, it's clear they only want what's best for the forum / members.

One reason I always posted polls on here was because it was so simple to attach them and get some votes, after awhile I realized it could get annoying sometimes. I felt that if you were going to post about something of interest there was always a single thing everyone wanted to know about it. For example this thread on Crossbows

http://sciforums.com/showthread.php?t=76416

To me I'd say that was a waste of a thread, there's no poll on whether anyones ever used one before. I hope you can see what I'm driving at, there's literally a million questions you can ask in a poll and the answers (if given honestly) will give you insight into the people posting. That's all I ever really wanted, for everyone to gain some real glimpses of those present here.

Now I'll say for the sake of conversation using polls might just make someone lazy and they'll merely vote instead of discussing a topic, that is very possible. Perhaps that's what the real issue has been with the polls (aside from my polls bizarre questions).

I've no idea why you'd allow me back after banning me again, I am certain a great deal are not happy, whether with me or the forums current state. What I will tell you all is I'm really just a nice guy with some eccentric ideas, for the most part I've been able to exercise them a little here. Thank you for encouraging me and offering me your help / minds it has been a pleasure and truly I find I've learned alot here. Some of you may be aware I'm on Spurious's forum, well for the most part I think it's better that way. I do tend to get carried away, and while I could post scientific theories, etc. here if you review my older posts (as sderenzi or darksidzz) you'll see there is something there of a social science experiment (if you will).

I'm not saying I'm asking for a ban, what I'm saying is that if you'll let me I will remain active. I probably won't post but still it's the sentimentality that matters.

And Fraggle / everyone I don't think I have more to learn than I do give, I think I'm just different and a little outside the norm. Adios!

HAPPY NEW YEAR

PS I almost forgot, the people on that list I really liked are:

Singularity
Imaplanck.
Wanderer (Satyr)
IceAgeCivilizations

I never understood why people ganged up to pick on you like they did. Sure, you had some goofy threads, but some were interesting. And you like polls... so? What's wrong with polls? Is it some kind of meme or something that polls are bad?

Anyway. I always found it funny that even newbs would join in the crowd lambasting you. I began to think that it was a way for newbs to ingratiate themselves with the older members (although most of the people who enjoyed bashing you were nothing but newb themselves... with a few notable exceptions.)

I can understand people getting pissy about you thoughts on women, because, face it, they're pretty fucked up. But, that's not what you usually drew heat from.

tech question: can we tell who is a real person and who is a bot?

There are ways to catch bots at signup, I can't give you details on that though. What I can suggest though is in poker there are 'Tells' and dealing with bots for the forum has 'Tells' too.
If you are querying about posters potentially being bots, like an ALICE or ELIZA clone made for forums discussion, they all too often fail to keep structured dialect, since their method of learning is not like that of a human.

People for years have been trying to synthesise human like communication for various reasons (i.e. the Loebner prize) and they have attempted to generate board dwellers before. (There use to be a whole conspiracy over Backslash777 here and concerns that other boards had news bots that could discuss a very little.)

For the most part on this forum the only bots we've seen are usually the advertisement bots which get banned pretty quickly, along with a few ones that just created user accounts and just kept accessing the site constantly to promote their URL through the user accounts website. (Currently we have to check to make sure no more bots like that occur because they burn bandwidth and promote illicit material).

Hmmmm....maybe Nikelodeon is a bot...

Thanks for the response. I wasn't aware that bots can do conversations too. I know about poker bots, that is rather easy to recognize...

From the owner's point of view, bots create pagecounts so they are not necessery bad, correct???

Page counts mean nothing, other than if you have software counting it on a front page and people identify it's purpose. For the most part bots just eat up bandwidth, taking up database space and aiding in other types of congestion.

That's why for the most part it's 'Ban the bot', unless it's adopted for news feeds since they tend to post "ontopic".
