I don't think it should be allowed to stay in that thread for the same reason that pornographic images used for jokes probably wouldn't be allowed stay.

I don't read stuff in the cesspool as a rule.
 
I'm sure if I looked I'd find some anti-Arab or anti-Semitic jokes anyway that's why it's called "the most offensive jokes".

Up to you. Personal theories on that point vary.

Is there a difference between offensive and repulsive? I think these cross that line. Is it unethical to have them on this forum?

A couple of points here:

• The difference between offensive and repulsive is subjective.

• Stuff like that is allowed in large part because it's in the Cesspool and we tend to not monitor that forum as much as we should.

• There is a low-key debate ongoing between moderators over whether we should even have a Cesspool in the first-place, and also whether topics in the Cesspool should be left open or locked.​

For the record, I'm an advocate of keeping the Cesspool and locking those topics. The "Offensive Jokes" thread was cute in its day, and I posted one of my favorite racist jokes in there; I still can't tell it without laughing. However, once it was deemed worthy of the Cesspool, it should have been locked and similar topics should have met the same fate in as soon as they sprouted.

One of the reasons I would argue against eliminating those posts from the record is that they are an historical record. If nothing else, the Cesspool topics are a general reminder about the depravity of the human condition and a specific testament to the stupidity of some people. The posts you've pointed out are a perfect example of both. I mean, they're not even creative jokes. Nor are they low exploitations of the obvious°. And the author has to stop to "LOL" at himself.

If you must be offended, there's nothing I can do to stop you. But I would encourage you to regard that topic and its contents for exactly what it is: a sad reminder of the human condition.

° low exploitations of the obvious — My favorite racist joke is included in post # 10 in that topic. (The punch line is included in #14.) While the cruelty of the joke is what makes me laugh, the thing is an exploitation of the obvious. Given certain terms extant in the culture, it was only a matter of time before someone got around to writing that joke. I learned it about 1987-88. (It was included on a page of jokes circulating around my junior high school; I should still have, somewhere, that very piece of paper.) I figure the joke had been around for a while before I found it. It's too obvious.

There's a difference. It may be a fine line, but its not one I'm willing to step over.

What's the difference?

Also sand nigger is not a true term because it merely applies a terrain to the word "nigger". I could argue that Russians are snow niggers and Brazilians are forestniggers.

You're not entirely wrong. There is a difference between laughing with and laughing at. And sometimes its a fine line.

According to a TV show on the topic:

“Today,” the voiceover begins, “it seems no subject is off limits for sick humour”. A promising enough beginning. But, of course, as is often the case when a programme is trying to land itself on “Planet Right Now”, the definition of “today” is stretched – unless by “today” they really mean “1942”. Because the subject under discussion at one point is Holocaust humour, when prisoners would joke that the upside of being there was the free haircuts. Gallows humour is nothing new, however, and for a joke to be considered “offensive”, there’s a big difference between gags from those who were there and mocking humour by those who weren’t.

The programme shows there’s a difference between “laughing with” and “laughing at” – and that’s not necessarily about the origin of the teller, it’s about the purpose of the joke.

So it’s easy to see that jokes about race (we see a disturbing clip of a young Michael Parkinson almost losing bladder control following a Bernard Manning “paki” gag in the 70s), come from a very unsavoury place indeed. But others (such as Princess Diana and paedophilia gags) arise from the hypocrisy in the way we treat such topics. And some (such as the Asian tsunami and the war on terror) are simply because of the way humour works.

The way I see it, the purpose of a Cesspool thread on offensive jokes is for some guys to have a laugh that is not really PC. Not to offend anyone.
