Has anyone here had any really nasty snowboarding/skiing/BMXing/biking/surfing/windsurfing/skydiving/etc./etc. accidents? I was just sitting here being bored and I realized I've had some bad wipeouts but nothing involving broken bones or anything serious (spare one concussion). Maybe I'm just lucky, or maybe I havn't been jumping enough stuff. But yeah, let's get a good forum going!

Only scratches and cuts so far, quite a lot actually, but never anything broken or serious. And I have done some pretty stupid stuff... guess I am also pretty lucky, but the injuries that happen while doing sports can look really bad and nasty.

In my Tony Hawk phase I tried to jump the bike over a speed bump...a mountain bike. Fell, got a pretty huge gash on my left elbow, and never tried anything so stupid again.

The scar is pretty cool but I have yet to meet a hot girl who thinks I am bad ass for having that scar.

There is a lesson here kids: Not all girls dig scars....you'll need an actual personality to attract girls.

Lol, I tried a somersault over a speedbumb with rollerblades, now that was dumb, only got it halfway through and now I have some scars on my shoulder, elbow and head...

I took a corner too fast on my Centurion Turbo racing bicycle, went wide and smacked into a car. I hit the windshield and dislocated my shoulder. My lovely bicycle, which I had scrimped and saved to buy (and was only three months old) was completely destroyed.

My shoulder has never been the same, and it has popped out three times in the 21 years since I had that accident. I've had numerous other bicycle racing related accidents that trashed bikes and gave me extensive road rash, but that was the worst one ever. Don't ever dislocate your shoulder if you can avoid it.

I had a huge wipeout on the ski hill once. I basically went STRAIGHT down, full-speed. It must of been a 35 degree angle. Had the bindings been tighter, my boots would not have come undone..who knows, I might've been crippled.

i once tried to BMX with a mountain bike, went of the jump, kept going then fell over. Then my sock started bleeding, and i discovered an open wound. 6 stitches on that one. our old soccer coach told us a story about how he as a semi-pro was doing a goal kick, and some guy was standing too close. Our coach ended up kicking the guy right below to kneecap, and broke the fibula and tibia, pushing both out the back of the other guys leg. We saw a video of it. fast and nasty. :m:

Never had one myself, but here's a site with some videos of other people's sporting injuries.

Especially see the one entitled "This Makes grown men weep"...

Failed a dropin on rollerblades and hear my upperspine and neck compress or something to that extend when i landed on my ass 2m down, anyway it was real cool sound the sound that makes you go "oh shit". But i was lucky, I only got a wipelash and a wierd tick once in a while when i turn my head to the left as the muscels in my neck contracted, lesson taugth leasson learned :).

Then another time on rollerblades, i was going backwards and wanted to do a 180 to return farwarn, as i start the turn(upper body first), 1 skate got stuck in a waterdrain.
Basicly everything but my right leg was doing the turn and it did not take long before my knee made some sound i never knew it could. But again i was lucky, momentum set me free, flying in to a bush almost hittin a 12x12cm wooden pole with my head.

I was snowboarding, fell, hit my head on a rock, and forgot what happened untill many hours later. I found myself waking up in a CAT scan machine at the hospital, that is a SCARY situation to wake up in! Fortunately no permanent damage, or at least I hope not... *twitch, twitch*

I've had many ski accidents. I used to live 5 minutes ( it closed down a couple of years ago) away from the biggest ski hill in the province. There also used to be a HUGE jump park. My worst fall was when I was about twelve years old and I was skiing with my cousins and our friends (there was about ten os us ranging from 12 years old to 18 years). We used to hit the biggest jumps in the park (that are now illegal without supervisors, so they don't exise hardly at all at other hills anymore). We used to spend as much time as we could at the ski hill. One time, we built a gigantic jump by stacking five picnick tables on top of eachother and making the sweetest lift ever. My older cousin who was 17 hit the jump at an odd angle and swiped a tree. His best friend (who was the best jumper out of all of us) hit the jump so fast that he flew 30 feet or more (I'm not kidding) over a nole into the middle of the half pipe. Everyone was too chicken to hit it but I thought I was cool and decided to hit the jump. I lost control in the air and landed face-first in the snow. I cracked my $100 ski goggles that I had gotten at chistmas in half. I was knocked out for about a minute or so. I pretended that I was OK but I think I had a concussion. I never even went to the hospital. I've never been the same sice on skis. I still hit jumps but I don't go over rock cuts and cliffs like I used to...

I've had several bloody noses, skimmed knees, elbows, massive bruises (mostly from being a goalie for the provincial team even with PRO equipment), broken fingers but nothing serious.

I can't play any good sports this year (I particularly miss hockey) because I'm going in for orthoscopy and a lateral release on my knee in January. I can't play hockey without my knee fully dislocating. I may need reconstructive surgery... :(

Come to think of it: does a torn lip and broken teeth from being knocked off my bike in the street count as a sporting injury? It certainly hurt, and commuting by bike can be considered a form of fitness training.

Broke my left leg snowboarding. Tibia and Fibula above the ankle, where the strap secured my boot the the bindings. Broke Tibia at an angle for about 2.5 inches, and Fibula had a 4 inch spiral fracture.

Getting my boot off hurt like hell. I spent 5 months in plaster, as there wasn't enough bone by the ankle to get a screw in. Leg set nearly straight.

I still snowboard.

The worst thing about it must be that the scar would form in a very prominent position. I needed scar revision surgery, and you can just about still see it. More of a problem for a woman, who can't hide the scar by growing a beard...

@Phlogistician: I'm not sure I would have the guts to continue the sport after an accident like that! You must be genuinely courageous, well done. :D

I have to admit I was a bit scared when I went back, but skiing and boarding kind of get under your skin, and if you're hooked, you're hooked. It's not about courage, but addiction, really.

I agree. Despite several accidents (none that broke anything... I still don't understand how I didn't break anything) I have skied in the mountains. I even went heleskiing once (one of the most amazing experiences of my life). It is all about addiction.

ILikeSalt,

They have HELESKIING in ontario? or is this in the rockies.

Another potentially bad accident--
I was going off this one jump at a place called 'wintergreen' (now closed as so many others in the past two years) and this idiot snowboarder was sitting UNDERNEATH! I kind of landed on him but purposely wiped out on my side..then he got angry at me...

I use to kickbox and one time one of my training partners threw a head kick at a guy and the guy ducked for some reason and swallowed his two front teeth. I know a guy who got his ear cut off with a sword during a live blade drill but somehow got his shoulder out of the way. I saw a guy get his ankle broken in a wrestling meet in college trying to spin out of a hold.

damn you robtex, hard to follow that
i broke my collerbone playing badminton (i ran into the net - how was i meant to know someone had tied it at the top and bottom)
broke an arm on a ramp blading
broke a finger playing football

Two more stories:

1) This track & field coach was was supervising the shotput event (my personal fav). One guy threw the thing, and he couldn't get out of the way in time. His skull collapsed and he died instantly (and no, I wasn't there.)

2) Wrestling: This one house-painter was reminiscing to me about his high school wrestling times. He was pretty big (6'6",) and built. So this one guy came up to him, said something that he shouldn't have, and next thing you know, big painter guy puts him into a suplex position and drives him straight onto the hardwood gym floor, breaking his collarbone or something.

(I want to add that he's a smart guy, not somebody who likes to cause pain for no reason )

I hope you don't mind if I re open this thread. I just came across it.

When I was about 9-10 I remember trying to learn to ride my bike with no hands. One day I was doing really good and was going really fast. I am not sure
what happened but the next thing I know I swerved into a parked car on the road. I flew off my bike like an idiot.

This is when I was older,

I remember having a wipe out on a wooden tobaggon. We decided we would go down the ski hill instead of the tobaggon hill because it wasn't big enough. Well we got going at a pretty damn good speed. We didn't realize at the bottom was a big dip in the ground. We found out soon enough and bounced in and back out of this ditch. I smashed my chin on their shoulder ( I was sitting in the back) I thought I had broken a tooth. Banged my nose (felt like it was broken) and broke my sunglasses. They were still on my face, but all crooked. We rolled off and tried to stand. They took one look at me with the crooked broken glasses on and were laughing their head off.

I hurt someone else while playing baseball. I was up to bat and I could really hit a ball back then. I smashed the ball right into the pitchers forehead. She fell to the ground, and had the imprint of the ball on her forehead. It immediately starting swelling up. That was the biggest goose egg I ever saw. It took a lot for me not to laugh because I really couldn't stand this girl. Yes it really was an accident.

Cracked a rib and made a lovely jagged cut on my left upper arm in a mountain bike crash. Still got that scar. :)

Dislocated left knee at kickboxing. How it happened, I have no idea, I launched a kick at someone, and the joint just pulled apart.

Have you seen the Ultimate Fighting video of the guy low kicking someone and having his leg break on the other guy's leg? It just flopped around like rubber. Really awesome.

No surgery yet. I'm thinking more and more about it, though. I'm thinking I'm going to try acupuncture to manage the pain.

Yeah I know exactly how you feel. I am curious to find out if that works. If you do try it, let us know how it goes.
