Xelasnave.1947 Post #12 is basically correct: The North Star (Polaris) is the only star which can be used to guide a traveler in the northern hemisphere & the Southern Cross constellation contains the only stars which can be used in the southern hemisphere.

Following a star or constellation until it is overhead can only lead to the North or South Pole of a planet which rotates. I have not given thought to using a star to navigate on a planet which does not rotate.

The biblical story of the magi being guided by a star in a myth, indicating ignorance of basic astronomy & the rotation of the Earth. No star, constellation, or other astronomical object could be stationary over Bethlehem & used to guide the magi.

I read that the start of Bethlehem was a comet. Below is the path of Comet 55P. A comet is relatively small and can appear out of nowhere when it gets close enough to sun, where to can be seen with the naked eye. It can then appear hold a position in the sky, like a new star, due to its orbital path. See Below.

The birth of the Divine child was predicted by the prophets and astrologers. Mary and Joseph went to the Bethlehem, their place of birth, for a nation wide census. Each person was to be counted at the place to their birth. There were so many people in town for the census, there were no rooms at the inn. Joseph was a carpenter, which was a good trade and business. He could afford a room at the Inn. However, Mary was about nine months pregnant, so they were slow and got to the inn, late. They were given shelter in the animal stalls, for half price, which was better than nothing. The three wise men were aware of the predictions of the astrology. When they saw the new comet/star, they began a journey to see the child. Their paths met at the inn.

I have observed and photographed a few comets.
For practical purposes you find they don't move very much night to night and following one would be no different to following a star in so far you could set out heading NE and later in the night heading NW.
A comet moves a few degrees each night.
They move but not to the degree needed to make the myth real.
Again as the story was not written down until the life of Jesus plus say fifty years we can only guess but I bet the Christians just stole the three kings stars and Sirius pointing to where the Sun was born at Solstice be cause lots of folk made astronomical observations and nothing of note can be found around that time.
Certainly by the time the New Testament was written any eye witness would be 80 to 100 years old.
I can't remember any details of comets I have observed and the last would have been only six or seven years ago.
I think the most plausible take is the three kings star plus Sirius explanation.

I definitively disagree with you " Certainly by the time the New Testament was written any eye witness would be 80 to 100 years old."

The Gospels individually were available in different cultures in different places in the Roman empire. They might have brought and bound together under the same cover later.

Those times are all I could arrive at but I am not expert so I welcome your input.

Your suggestion that something in writting existed would seem reasonable as it would be rather strange if what I suggest could be the way it happened.

Do you have anything to indicate The Gospels were written and were individually available in different cultures and different places in the Roman empire.

I few days ago I watched a program were Theologian discussed the Gospels and in the languages they were written , I would need time to research this point.

How exact does a star, comet, or supernova lead anyone to a specific town and then an animal stall?

There's a comet tomorrow night shortly after sunset. Venus is also out. Follow either one of them and tell me where it takes you.

Flying saucers? Where from? Earth is the first inhabited planet in the universe. It's ONLY two-thousands-and-seventeen. We may one day build spaceships and inhabit other planets, only for future beings to fly through the air backwards, again, as their ancestors did, and pass through the fire that is the Sun to visit the almighty through the family tree that is us, but as of yet this is undocumented...

Does any of this make sense?

    Anyone?

Put simply any being traversing the family tree will have to come THROUGH here.

Even beings on Spaceships must be traversed...

Yes ...if you can read and understand the Bible you should be able to make sence of this.
Clearly the author is using symbolism but I have translated it and find it just a rehash of the often quoted by me on these forums the following....
When the Sun (son) sets in the saucer of milk the Cat (cat) will sing to the Cuckoo Clock.
Ask Poe he may have a diffent interpretation.

You jest when you expect Poe to make sense?

Don't know what they served at Mad Hatters Tea Party but it was not tea.

Humpty Dumpty slips a blanket on Poe to the soft sounds of Poe's snores.
