as applied to television denotes the brightness component of the transmitted television channel, each channel being 6 Mhz wide. the brightness component is a vestigal sideband AM modulated signal with a carrier frequency of app. 1.25Mhz from the lower edge of the channel. the upper sideband has a bandwidth of approx. 4.5 Mhz and the lower sideband 1.25 Mhz. adding these gives 5.75 Mhz. the other 0.25 Mhz at the upper end is for the audio. it is an inverted signal meaning that less voltage is needed for white scenes. the color information is usually referred to as chroma and is transmitted on a separate carrier. the video signal is identical in both color and B/W sets.
