Datamining is called so because it refers to Data being like an "open mine", and to get to the "ore" or in this case important data, Robots (Bot) have to mine everything into chunks that can be handles.
Datamining is used by Search engine firms to collect pages together to be cataloged, but other creations on the internet also use datamining like certain A.I. projects, Spammers and Hackers.
It is the prefered type of mining for environmental organizations like Greenpeace, as well as sociologists.
