ok i was lissioning to ABC mornings and they were talking about the massive drought in australia (which is no joke) and the risk that next year adelaide could actually run out of water for critical human needs as the transport water isnt currently in the system and they got the head of the murry darling basin authority to talk about it and it was all very serious which is understandable. Then they played a portion of a US radio show by Art Bell from 18months ago(a paranormal conspiracy theorist aparentlyPlease Register or Log in to view the hidden image!) and he was saying that our goverment is in secret negotiations with the US and the commonwealth to evacuate 11 million people from australia (out of a population of 20 million) because we dont have the water to surply the food belt (the golden valley). This guy was dead serious about it, it was SOOO funny, evacuate half a countryPlease Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Asguard...what so funny? Australia already had the fires that burned homes without mercy, its time to take a stand and change the way people are treated.
um draqon, why exactly would we evacuate? if things became that desprate we could import food rather than evacuating people. Why the hell would we WANT to evacuate to the US? concidering its lack of social services Evacuating a small group of people to NZ MIGHT be plausable (as you dont need any sort of permit to stay there, you just have to rock up and can live and work there as long as you like) But lastly as if they would actually DO this, there are engerering solutions to the problems like desal plants which could fix the problem alot better than mass evacuation
Well, it is rather "funny" ...cause there are major problems in the USA with water supplies for our own crops! California, where tons of produce is grown, is running out of water. The Rio Grande valley in Texas, where more tons of produce is grwn is running out of water. The entire state of Florida, where more tons of produce is grown, is running out of water. Australia has a major problem, but it's not alone in that same problem. The issue of fresh water supply is a major problem for the entire fuckin' world. And most people aren't even aware of it, or they simply brush it off by saying idiotic things like "Just pump it from the oceans!" Baron Max
baron if that last was aimmed at me i know dam well the implications of a desal plant, they are building one in Adelaide and i already knew how they work on a small scale because i keep marine fish (which need RO water). There are issues with every solution but im sure there are alot more with evacuating a contant
Why not just get an iceberg and tow it to your shore then chip away at it to get the ice off then melt it and sell it.
At present I am in New Zealand what a change from Brown, flat waterless Australia. What wasnt funny was the goverment was in negotiations with the US about turning the outback into a vast nuclear waste dump. Mind you what else is Australia good for as it is one vast wasteland.
Well, Baron, i think there first clue should have been the sale of bottled water. I remember thinking when this first started (Evian): Who in the hell is ever going to pay for water? It's f***ing free! Now look - a multi billion dollar industry! Little clues like this should make people wake up and look around - we are running out of many natural resources, water being only one of them. It would be funny if it weren't so sad...
Randwolf actually i take that more as a sign of the trumph of marketing in the westen world and of its decidence. Only a ritch moron pays for something when they can get as good a product for free. Im still waiting for companies to start marketing airPlease Register or Log in to view the hidden image! (as in portable cyllanders of normal air not medical O2, essential SCBA or diving air)
Get some perspective. 180 people died in the recent fires. That's about 0.00072% of the population of Australia.
Maybe so, maybe no. I've noticed a trend here in the states, even amongst lower income families, to include bottled drinking water in their budgets. I'm kind of old school and laugh at this whilst I continue to use tap water, but I have to admit - the quality of this tap water, along with the taste, has declined markedly over the last 30+ years. I'm not sure what this means, exactly, but it is based on my own personal experience. Something is going on... You know, Asguard, I have often reached this same thought... What happens when the sea level eventually rises 90 metres and you all have to move inland? You won't be wanting nuclear waste dumps in the interior of Oz then. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
is there really enough water trapped as ice to raise the sea levels that high not that I care..living at 7000 ft
PieAreSquared inspite of what people keep saying its not water in the caps melting which will cause a rise in sea levels. Ok its not ALL the water in the caps melting which will anyway, the stuff in antatica which is currently on land will cause a rise but the artic where its all sea ice wont anyway. The big problem is that as you heat water the molicules move away from each other, so the sea ITSELF will expand, THATS what will cause the flooding. As to your specific question i dont know
What? You take him seriously? He's an entertainer with an amazing ability to speak with wackjobs while keeping a straight face and acting as though he believes everything they say. His show is quite entertaining, great to listen to if you can't fall asleep because it's entertaining but you know damned well it's as relevent as an X files episode and so you never get so interested in it that it actually keeps you awake. If you think he's serious about all this crap, the jokes on you.
