We get Smithsonian magazine. It has a list of the Board of Regents. VP Dick Cheney is on it. 1 - What is a board of regents? 2 - Is it a VP position or is it just something Dick Cheney is involved in?

In a museum? I've been to all of them, and I'd be hard put to see any political influence at all. I liked the Museum of Natural History and The Native American museums best

"Regent" literally means "ruler," from Latin. It is commonly used for the governing bodies of universities, but it is not limited to that. In monarchies, sometimes there is a hiatus between the death of one monarch and the ascension of the next, perhaps due to his infancy. In some cases a regent might be appointed to run the country in his name until he's potty-trained. The Smithsonian is a prestigious institution so being on its board of regents is an honor. Cheney has a lot of influential friends so it was easy for him to get it. Its official name is the Smithsonian Institution. In addition to its many museums it includes a number of research centers. The National Zoo is also part of the Smithsonian. It qualifies as an educational institution and like most museums it even has educational programs, but it's not a college or university because it does not grant degrees. On Sunday evenings they have free concerts and recitals at the National Gallery of Art. I've seen some fabulous performances there.
