We get Smithsonian magazine. It has a list of the Board of Regents. VP Dick Cheney is on it.
1 - What is a board of regents?
2 - Is it a VP position or is it just something Dick Cheney is involved in?

    Hello, Orleander,

No, things like that are mostly just honorary positions.

No, only the ones they chose. Every college chooses their boards.

    "2.02 Appointment
Members of the Board of Regents are appointed or elected in the manner specified by the Charter. When a vacancy arises from death, resignation or retirement of a citizen member elected by joint resolution of Congress, the Board of Regents shall nominate a proposed successor for consideration by the Senate and the House of Representatives. In a museum?

I've been to all of them, and I'd be hard put to see any political influence at all.

I liked the Museum of Natural History and The Native American museums best

Just do some basic research on how much stuff goes "missing" on it's way to the Smithsonian...

...Up until now there has been quite a debate as to whether G. E. Kincaid actually existed. There have been no records of his work, nor any proof from the Smithsonian he was actually involved with them. Many have proposed the newspaper article was an "April Fools Day" joke!...

"....The only possible proof might be the "other" article mentioned in the Arizona Republic article which presented the story. Finding the proof was difficult, but not impossible. Here, shown below for the first time in almost 100 years is the "first article" from 1909, a full month before the legendary 1909 Arizona Republic article was published. As you can see, G.C.Kincaid's expedition occurred as reported! We have also found other articles offering further evidence the story is real. "

Gee Orleander, you should apply at the Smithsonian, I think you'd do well there. Only tell half the story correct...

That webpage goes on to detail the personal expedition of the webmaster into the Grand Canyon, stoping at a point some distance from the cave, which is sectioned off by the U.S Government, which controlled the surrounding area shortly after the find. Funny thing, that.

"Regent" literally means "ruler," from Latin. It is commonly used for the governing bodies of universities, but it is not limited to that. In monarchies, sometimes there is a hiatus between the death of one monarch and the ascension of the next, perhaps due to his infancy. In some cases a regent might be appointed to run the country in his name until he's potty-trained.
The Smithsonian is a prestigious institution so being on its board of regents is an honor. Cheney has a lot of influential friends so it was easy for him to get it.
Its official name is the Smithsonian Institution. In addition to its many museums it includes a number of research centers. The National Zoo is also part of the Smithsonian. It qualifies as an educational institution and like most museums it even has educational programs, but it's not a college or university because it does not grant degrees.

On Sunday evenings they have free concerts and recitals at the National Gallery of Art. I've seen some fabulous performances there.
