I'm going to say this in a very serious way-I graduated from elementary school.
Any pets?

James R 12-12-01, 08:04 PM Chagur,
Q. Why survey since unvalidated data?
I like to get an idea of who I'm talking to. It's amazing how much you can tell about a person from their pets! ;)
Sure, people can lie, but that doesn't worry me too much. I personally wouldn't see the point in replying to this type of thing if you're going to lie. After all, I haven't asked for any really personal information.
Anyway, how many survey responses are validated?
It is interesting that people are so wary so far, though. This thread (at the time of writing this) has so far been viewed almost 100 times, yet there have been less than 10 responses.

by even a small bit of exposure?

Should the hamster post twice for its two identities??
I love coming back to read everyone's contributions to the demographics thread, I just wish more people would join in.
Can anyone think of a way to promote more participation? I feel like I'm meeting new friends.
Cheers to all,
Teri
:)

scilosopher 02-08-02, 09:54 AM Goofyfish,
Judging by ther number of people who have responded to this thread - and the level of anonymity still involved - I'm guessing space wouldn't be an issue. Personally I just don't have any pictures of myself in electronic format. Or normal pictures either apart from my various ids (well maybe a couple, but nothing recent). I would certainly be curious to see other people's pictures (though I'm sure some jokers would put up cartoons/joke pics/etc).
Pollux V 02-08-02, 11:10 AM It's time for someone to invent a disposable digital camera. I think that it's possible to digitize (if that's a word) regular pictures by either scanning them at a friend's place or forking them over to any chain 1 hour photo store.
I have a crappy digital camera now but I lost the software which renders the thing useless, lucky for me I lost the software RIGHT after a total system wipe, losing hundreds of .jpgs of everything.
How did tht happen!
Were playing with registry or perhaps a virii?
(I have bought for a 1Gb hdd for yust a few bucks($6) and keep it as my backup. starts to run short of space recently though).
1. How did you first hear about or discover sciforums.com?

Roughly 21 years, 7 months, 4 days.
5. What do you do when you're not here (i.e. occupation etc.)?
I'm a student at CSUS (http://www.csus.edu). I was a computer science major for 3 1/2 years until I, uh, flunked my way into being a philosophy major this semester. :o (I hated math related requirements, so I now hope to come up with a theory to talk math out of existence...)
Another thing I spend my time on when not here is working on my websites: QuietPlease.org (http://www.quietplease.org), Free-webmaster-resources.net (http://www.free-webmaster-resources.net) and BaseballSite.net (http://www.baseballsite.net)

Philosophy (see 1 and 5), plus any Star Wars topics and to a lesser extent maybe Star Trek topics.

I'm supposed to have qualifications? :bugeye: Well, if it helps, I come highly recommended by myself.
8. Do you have any pets? What are their names?
Cats: India, Daisy. Dog: Goldie (golden retriever).
9. Give one fact about yourself not already provided in the above answers.
Hmm... my name is Paul, but someone who last posted in July of 1999 has that username here.
Pollux V 02-09-02, 01:43 PM actually avatar we (my family and I) think it was a virus from this program called 'marketscore.' If you ever see that on the net avoid it, the thing totally f*d up the internet for me and we spent a week ripping apart our pc and then throwing it back together.
I'd start a picture forum if I had any pictures of myself...

9. Give one fact about yourself not already provided in the above answers.
Uh....I'm a caffine addict...:bugeye:
Quite frankly, I don't know how I discovered Sci-forum; I surfed in,signed up, and bookmarked the page, the rest, it's a mystery to me, dude.
I'm here about every 3 day.
I am permanently out of my mind as to my body's physical location, it's somewhere in the USA; now if I could just remember where I left it. I know I left my heart in Rialto, but as to the rest of the pieces, well, uh, I think I was distracted by a lovely pair of legs.
I am old enough to know better, but young enough to do it anyway, e.g.: 30 something (like that OLD tv series...)
Which topics (objective case) have I an interest?
Mostly Morality issues. These of course bleed into the theological issues of religion (opposed to the sociological).
I write, I post denegrations to most daily newspapers (and their inane uneducated reporters) which may or may NOT be printed, depending upon how liberal/green/stupid the editors are. I also custom design spread sheets (accounting sheets for computers that small businessmen haven't time to do for themselves (or are just flat too lazy to learn how to do it themselves--I don't care WHY they don't, as long as they PAY me to do it for them).
I think logically. It scares women.
I have two DSH puddytats that sit up and beg on command, ALWAYS come when called, and love being (mildly) abused. I used to train horses to drive, and did quite well even with Belgian progesterine drops which are noted for their abject stupidity.
Only one fact? Well here's three I despise television which is why I spend 18 hours a day on the 'puter (mostly working, and some puttering...). I believe EVERY person in the
US over the age of 21 should train in fire arms safety, practice at least ONE hour per week at a range, and carry a personal (yeah, concealed) fire arm--there'd be a LOT less hijacks (although we've only seen 4 actuals, and two attempts in the past year--there would be a lot less street crime. As to conservationists, They can buy all the land they want, and do whatever they want ON it so far as I am concerned (as to telling me what I may or may not do, well, there we have a problem).

Err, i love to argue (hheheheh thats why i love this site)
1. How did you first hear about or discover sciforums.com?
Mailing list ... Dave invited those who subscribed to his AUFORA mailing list to check out his new site.
2. How often do you visit sciforums?
Oh ... f--k. Dave must be terrified when he looks at the user statistics. These days, technically, I never leave; it's the start page on every internet browser I use and before I quit my job I got used to just having the page minimized on my desktop. Habit, mostly. But every time I sit down at the iMac, I pop Sciforums out of my dock and see what people are saying.
3. What city/town/state/country are you in?
Seattle, Washington, USA ...
4. How old are you, roughly? (please answer the poll, too).
28, Gemini
5. What do you do when you're not here (i.e. occupation etc.)?
I'm trying to avoid going back to work (a noble venture), write the novel (always, always), and smoke my body weight in marijuana (what?) ....
6. Which topics in sciforums interest you the most? Why?
Religion, World Affairs, Philosophy, Art & Culture, Ethics ... not quite in that order but whatever ... ;)
Well, you're sort of looking at my childhood: Religion, Politics, Art/Culture, and eventually Philosophy. The topics happen to chase after the parts of the human experience most vital to me.
7. What qualifications do you have (if any)?
Umm ... I can smoke you under the table ...?
Actually, it's the scariest thing: I have no qualifications whatsoever. I finished high school ... that's about the only thing I've finished. Even the lost novel I wrote when I was 14 & 15 wasn't finished when the forces of the Universe conspired to destroy two electronic and one paper copy of the manuscript, leaving me with nothing.
But what can I say? It's like a job interview: What experience do you have with computers? "Well, I've been around them since I was 9, used them nearly every day." Yes, but qualifications ... do you have any Word proficiency certificates? Have you taken a PowerPoint class? "No, but I considered it education enough putting those things together for the people who had taken the class."
Hey! There's a genuine qualification! ;) I can type 80-100 words a minute. (60 - 80 with this crappy MacAlly keyboard ... can you believe an Apple store that won't sell me an iMac keyboard?)
But yeah ... qualifications? I'm a college dropout who smokes massive amounts of dope in order to hide the fact that I am the most intelligent person I know. There's one other, used to be two. But one has chosen to renounce his considerable intellecutal prowess. I'm hardly the brightest guy in the world, but it's starting to scare me how stupid my closest friends are becoming by the day.
I have no qualifications ....
8. Do you have any pets? What are their names
A cat and a girlfriend.
Okay, it's a bad joke. The girlfriend acts like a pet, though ... I can't seem to make her go away. I've tried pleading, cajoling, bribing, sneaking out the back door ... everything short of violence. It's kind of like teaching a cat to roll over and play dead.
I do, however, have a cat ... her name is Liban, a mixed-breed smoke alpha-female with blue eyes and Siamese tendencies.
9. Give one fact about yourself not already provided in the above answers
I am the Duck of Truth. (Don't ask.)

I am an evangelical skeptic:
I am the very model of a skeptic evangelical
I've information rational, empirical and clinical
I know the precise moment when my thinking must turn critical
From alchemy to zombies and all sort of claims ethereal
I'm very well acquainted with the new age woo woo paradigm
I understand why I must keep a relatively open mind
While faced with the unlikely chance that once perhaps some light may shine
When honestly considered though, it's mostly been a waste of time
I'm very good at sizing up a reasonable argument
I know the Uri Gellers and I know how all the spoons got bent
In short in matters rational, empirical and clinical
I am the very model of a skeptic evangelical
In short in matters rational, empirical and clinical
She is the very model of a skeptic evangelical
When I can hold the bible up to skeptical analysis
When I can tell the big bang from a tale that's told in Genesis
When I know that abduction is more likely sleep paralysis
And I can tell from evidence what's real from tests and common sense
When I can tell a theory from what's mainly hypothetical
When I can tell a scam from something worthy and more practical
When I know that a future can't be foretold astrological
And I can tell a Nessy from a log a boat or mackeral
Then I can write a letter that is seething and incredulous
To Fox TV and TLC for airing the ridiculous
In short in matters rational, empirical and clinical
I am the very model of a skeptic evangelical
In short in matters rational, empirical and clinical
She is the very model of a skeptic evangelical
In fact, when I can say for certain, pyramids were for the dead
Nowhere in ancient Egypt were they seen as fashion for the head
When I can be appalled at psychic surgery and laetrile
I guarantee that hemlock tea is every bit as natural
When I can recognize appeals to test my own credulity
And I can catch each one thereby escaping with impunity
When I know that the speed of light has only one velocity
And I can tell a snake oil without checking it's viscosity
My skeptical pursuits have caused a few to say I'm cynical
I can say I'm not and not be one ounce hypocritical
And still in matters rational, empirical and clinical
I am the very model of a skeptic evangelical

Merlijn 04-18-02, 02:46 AM 5. What do you do when you're not here (i.e. occupation etc.)?
- I got a new job as mathematics teacher. It's really fun. Unforrtunately it's only for 2,5 days a week. So -still looking for another job.
8. Do you have any pets? What are their names?
- Finally I decided to have a cat. (even though I still got my financial problems). He's called Boender. He is about 15 yrs of age. So, when i saw him in that cage in the animal shelter, I just thought of giving this poor creature a save home for his old day. I can tell this is much better for him. He is much more vivacious, looks more healthy and generrally seems to enjoy life with me. I am very happy.
*stRgrL* 04-18-02, 12:37 PM Wow, it sounds like things are really picking up for you! Im very happy for you. And about he cat... I would of done the same thing. tallest 04-26-02, 08:35 AM 1. I stumbled across these boards whilst looking for info on a 3600 mile long 'supercolony' of ants that I had heard about a few weeks ago (There's a thread here somewhere).
2. I visit the boards and have a quick look whenevr I'm online but I only post if a) I have something to say and b) I have time.....
3. I live in Scotland and am quite patriotic about it. Given that I believe in a one-world setup where there are no economic borders and everyone is treated equally my patriotism bothers me slightly!
4. I am 31 years old, which never fails to shock me (surely it was my 21st last year?!)
5. I am the Health and Safety consultant to a (fairly) large hotel chain.
6. I try to maintain an equal interest in all subjects but I have little time for those whose answer to difficult questions invokes (any) god- lower case intentional. It just smacks of the head-in-the-sand mentality that I believe is hampering our development of knowledge.
7. I got good grades in every subject I took at school, including all the sciences on offer and then in my carefree (foolish) 18 year old way I elected not to go to university immediately but to take a year out and work. Needless to say I got caught up in the joy of a regular paycheck and have still not expanded my formal studies. I have dozens of personnel, catering and health and safety quals and am a qualified trainer, but I've never checked to see whether these quals carrry any weight outside of the UK. I do, however, understand people (my time as a personnel manager).
8. I do not believe that it is right to keep pets, certainly not in towns or cities, unless they have all the space and freedom to live as natural a life as possible. A bit of a sweeping statement I know, but there you have it.
9. Let me see, one fact not shown above....
I am a bleeding-heart liberal type who believes that everyone should be allowed to do whatever the hell they please as long as their actions do not detriment any other individuals. I sometimes come across as a bit of a hippy because of this.
Oh, and tiassa , you couldn't smoke me under the table, but the chat would be interesting (to us)

1. How did you first hear about or discover sciforums.com?
I saw a link to a specific post a couple of days ago from an atheist website.
2. How often do you visit sciforums?

3. What city/town/state/country are you in?
Chemainus (South Vancouver Island)/British Columbia/Canada.
4. How old are you, roughly? (please answer the poll, too).
About 17.5.
5. What do you do when you're not here (i.e. occupation etc.)?
I'm a Student in grade 11... mom held me back a year from starting school so I may seem a bit old for grade 11.. point being: I didn't fail Anything! I like electronics, computers, and philosophy a little bit... but discussing it gets really annoying sometimes. I'm also learning Japanese because I wanted to learn a language (it feels like a real accomplishment) and it was interesting. As for highschool, I am lazy, hate doing any work & homework (and so i dont), but usually manage to get 90+ percent anyways.. I DESPISE CHEMISTRY.
6. Which topics in sciforums interest you the most? Why?
Religion (I'm atheist obviously), computers, and politics a little bit (But I don't know too much about it). I am most interested in learning about the arguments for/against relgion being a farce, so that I can debate it with people I know in real life.
7. What qualifications do you have (if any)?
Uhhhh, passed grade 10 ;) Will get a bachelors in either language, philosophy, economics, computers, or engineering (electrical).. dunno yet.
8. Do you have any pets? What are their names?
One pet rat, named Hibiki. Fairly common japanese name I think. And I can write it in Japanese :)
9. Give one fact about yourself not already provided in the above answers.
I wish I knew more so I could talk in more interesting subjects. So i'll probably talk in the aforementioned subjects anyways and annoy the hell out of you! Beware.
There you go.

I haven't bought a computer yet, I've been spoiled growing up on massive doses of 'Star Trek', and am waiting for an affordable, semi-AI computer. In about 5 years from now, I guess? But I'll wait until after the first ones come out, since they will still be expensive & have a lot of bugs.

GB-GIL Trans-global 07-07-02, 02:27 AM 1. How did you first hear about or discover sciforums.com?
I had a premonition one rainy night last October, more letters in the URL filled in every once in a while in my mind until I knew the whole thing.
2. How often do you visit sciforums?
Pretty often.
3. What city/town/state/country are you in?
Err... Phoenix, Arizona, USA
4. How old are you, roughly? (please answer the poll, too).
12, 13 in August
5. What do you do when you're not here (i.e. occupation etc.)?
Err... Basically just student. Although I do multiple things most of the time which do not include student, they aren't exactly my occupation...
6. Which topics in sciforums interest you the most? Why?
US involvement in international affairs, religion, Mideast conflict.
Why? That isn't a very easy question to answer...
7. What qualifications do you have (if any)?
Well, I spent a few weeks reading just books about the conflict, I did quite a bit of research on it. US involvement in international affairs? Generally I read the newspaper and have read quite a bit on foreign policy. Religion? Well, considering I spent one year in religious school (that was preschool, lol) which doesn't really qualify me... However I did read a modern translation of the Bible from cover to cover, I've witnessed evolution, and I am God... (I've witnessed evolution, yes, but I'm not God lol.)
8. Do you have any pets? What are their names?
I've got 3.
Rabbits:
=Honey, Rabbit, part Netherlands Dwarf, part something else, light brown-orange colour, perhaps like honey mixed with mayonnaise, female, my own rabbit, spayed
=Wicket, Rabbit, purebred Netherlands Dwarf, jet black colour, male, my older sister's rabbit, neutered
Wicket and Honey live together and are quite close, and he instinctually defends her against danger even though she is quite a bit larger than him. They're both very small, have lived about half their lifespans already, and are adopted rabbits (she's been with me for about 1~2 years now, he has been 3~4 years now), she came from a woman who could no longer take care of her, he came from a traumatic situation in which he was one of the last surviving rabbits of a kid who went to college, leaving his father to take care of his barn of rabbits (but his father never did), also the youngest of them.
=Speedy, Desert tortise. Family pet, perhaps about 10~11 years old, more sentimental than most tortises (craves attention and high voices, neck stroking)
About 5 years ago, my 3rd Grade teacher found him in the middle of the road on the way to school, searched for an owner (he seemed to have had extensive contact with humans before) but never found one, sort of just absorbed him from the teacher who didn't want to have to take care of him.

12? Wow, you're very mature! I used to be second-youngest, and now I'm third or fourth...or ninth! (at least to my knowledge). I remember when I was 12, the world was in the palm of my hand, and I could still get away with being immature. You lucky one. Use your youth wisely. Be as crazy as you want, while you still have the time.. :) After 14, it all goes downhill. :( :D
1. How did you first hear about or discover sciforums.com?
I was sitting there one night on herb and John Lennon looked from the cover of my Sgt. Pepper's album and said 'Hey man, you should check out sciforums dot com. it's real groovy' in his old accent.
Okay, now that the standard joke is over; I had heard something about some time-space thing on Discovery and wanted to find out the whole story. A google search led me to here.

1. How did you first hear about or discover sciforums.com?
A friend gave me the link. I just registered tonight, and this is my first post. Hooray.
2. How often do you visit sciforums?
A couple of times so far. Probably a few more times, and maybe a lot more if it looks interesting.

Twenty-one years, one month, eight days.
5. What do you do when you're not here (i.e. occupation etc.)?
I'm a college student at a snobbish liberal arts school. If there's an archaeological dig anywhere near, I'm usually trying to be in the middle of it. Most of my time not here is being spent studying, exploring (the urban spelunking kind), reading, harmonica-ing, playing video games, studying, or visiting friends, or doing something else entirely. Like studying.

Human sciences, and whatever else has a nice discussion going. I don't know much about physics or chemistry or most of biology, but I've read my Sagan, Dawkins, and Gould.
7. What qualifications do you have (if any)?
HA! None. I'm working towards a BA in history and anthropology with emphasis on the Classical period, and one day I hope do have a big shiny PhD in Classical Archaeology hanging on my wall. I'm fairly good at reading and translating Classical and Medieval Latin, and I'm not too shabby at web-design.
8. Do you have any pets? What are their names?
I used to have a ferret, but she died this past winter. The next pet I get is either going to be a malamute or a mastiff, and it will be named "Caracalla" after my favorite Roman emperor. You know, the one that Rise and Fall... called "The Common Enemy of All Mankind?" S/he's going to be a good dog.
9. Give one fact about yourself not already provided in the above answers.
Right now, thanks to the painkillers provided for my recovery from getting a wisdom tooth removed, I'm feeling really happy. And if none of this makes sense, that's why. Oxycodone!

Hi everybody,
I'm interested in finding out a bit more about the people who post to this board. Since there doesn't seem to be any kind of survey so far, I thought it might be interesting to ask a few questions. Respond to however much of this you want to.

1. I visit the www.alliedassault.com off-topic forum once in a while and someone said that this was THE forum to visit and participate in. I agree...
2. I try to visit once a day and look at each section (the downside to being interested in almost all topics...)
3. I live in Gatineau, Quebec in Canada. It's getting cold ;)
4. I am 21 years old.
5. Depending on the time of day, I might be playing chess, basket-ball, weight-lifting, playing billiards, video-games, eating, sleeping, reading or doing some math...
6. I am still new to the forum and I haven't had the chance to check out all of the sections in detail so I will answer this at a later time.
7. I consider myself a jack of all trades, as I find most people incomplete: aside from the special hobby the person might have, he/she will usually have a very general education (nothing very impressive) but ONE specialisation. I want to be as knowledgeable as possible in ALL areas :D
8. When I was younger, I had 2 pet rats. Now we have a family dog (Shi-Tzu) named Tenchi.
9. One fact about myself ? I am usually underestimated and my talents/skills, underappreciated. Life in the dark isn't always bright :D :D :D

I'm interested in the Genetics stuff also due to the last developments and achievements and all the moral problem these bring. Furthermore, I like this subject very much and maybe my occupation will be around this in the future.
Subcultures: Pseudoscience (I hate this name, it's not a suitable one for this such of issue, in my opinion)
I've been reading and learning about UFOs, aliens, beings and all of this stuff for many years. I've gotten into it mysteriously; Simply one of my hobbies.
and the Site Fidback, of course. It's very interesting knowing more about people you don't know very well, but hearing their emotions, feelings and opinions.

8. I HAD pets, fish and some hamsters, but my parents didn't like it very much.. :(
