I had an idea for this topic while reinstalling my mdk10 because of one more of my "discoveries" while experimenting with it.
Basically this thread should be for those little tips and warnings that we can share from our daily experience (trial and error) with different operating systems and programs.
Things you mustn't do under any circumstances :rolleyes: :D
Every entry should start with the version of the OS you are running (and) the program the tip is for.

think I should start :D

-> Linux Mandrake 10 Community Edition / KDE 3.2 / installing fonts
it is not adviced to install 100dpi fonts while 75dpi fonts are still installed and enabled. Will mess up your fontlist, some fonts will dissapear and Xmms (and possilby other applications) will have ugly and smeared up letters in it's internal menu's
 
Never restart your computer during a 7-cd full debian install so you can play some warcraft 3... it just ain't there, man.
 
Here's one: know who you are and where you are.

While for a regular user rm -rf / might not work for root it WILL work ;)
 
Fork out some money and buy a legal copy of WinXP or you can't install any service packs or updates.

Dont write viruses or ill run you down if I see you on the street :)

wrong and wrong
prior to using Linux I used WinXp, got SP1 on it, and all the updates I needed
 
Its probably not best that way, my xp plays up constantly now, im getting CRC errors and all sorts with games and other CD's and i know its not the CD's i've tested them on another computer, sometimes i hate computers.

Using fullpaths with chown/chmod as root is advisoble.
Using "chown nobody.nobody / -r" because you think you are in a samba root is not

Perhaps the warning about using the root user was there for a reason.... naaaa :)
 
When installing linux do your homework, or you be kept up with after hours detention trying to work out why it all went wrong.

I have one linux on a 1'44, it's a router os
(I have deattached my floppy drive though :rolleyes: - hd cooler needed space :D)
 
indeed, as the files zooooom by on the screen, my first thougth was "wow lots of files" follow by "was that that /bin /sbin" follow by "SHIIIT... ups"
