What if I just bought the computer that best suited me, you bought the computer that you prefer, and everyone buys what they want, and we all keep our bitter opinions to ourselves and we all live to hate another day?

I wouldn't know about "idiot owners", however the rebooting of the server is applied during an "Off-peak" time, I'm not entire sure though if it follows daylight saving or not.

If I had access, I would however alter the maintenance to be done 1hr earlier. (There's a lot of other things I'd change too, but that's me trying to resolve problems. For instance the reason the site goes down is because the database is going through maintenance, so it locks it from any data changes during that period, to increase the uptime would require creating a second database and rotating them between primary and secondary, this would mean one database can be maintained while another is active. However this would mean constant database swaps to keep them parallel.)

The best time for server maintenance is actually about 8am - 10am UTC ±1 (daylight savings causes peoples clocks to change so UTC has to have a leeway of 1 hour, so it's usually best to just go with 8am - 10am GMT with daylight savings included)
 
WTF Stryder.. Cleaning a data base every day????? What are you cleaning????? I have run many DB's. A good data engine should never need cleaning.. Whats going on that needs sciforum cleaning???

A good database engine, however you have to take into consideration that the database here isn't run on CRON jobs, it's actually run by user activity. There is alot of data activities that are logged like the users IP changes and any bots/access to the site. Posts, threads and their movements are also done based upon specific "Cron" like events at as near the time as they are specified.

You also have to consider the database here is pretty huge for what it is.

That just covers site maintenance, there is always the possibility that the shared host has it's own CRON jobs set, it's possible there might be DoS attacks set against this site or others on the same server etc. It's also possible that the server is behind a router that gets overloaded at that time of day.

So many potential reasons for any slowdown, the database is just the main thing that I believe is maintained around then.
 
Well what ever the reason for the slowdown or pause there is something wrong with the database design if this needs to happen daily. Personally I like sciforums.

But imagine if google, myspace, youtube, or a host of other sites had to shutdown daily..

I assume that the database is MySql. Any cleans "ie deleting irrelevant records" can easily be done without interrupting functionality..

how hard is it to understand that? for instance, yahoo is hosted on freebsd/apache so why not a piddling website like sci?

I've never understood why people give so much credence to a kernel, so what..it's Unix..big woop. It's the OS on top of the kernel that matters; freeBSD 7 (the ancestor of a shared kernel) for example is one of the most secure OS on the market, Mac OS 10.5 on the other hand is the least secure on the market. Every year PWN2OWN hackers attack Mac computers coupled with ANY browser and they go down faster than every other, sometimes in less than 1 minute..Mac programmers don't even attempt to prevent exploits. In comparison; IE8 on Win7 is one of the most secure, and Google Chrome (with their wonderful sandboxing) on Win7 is the most secure of standard Operating Systems/Browser combos.

That being said...if you want to dick around on the internet and chat with your bff's get a Mac. If you want to do business, get a Windows machine.

I use Linux, but I hate Ubuntu...it's basically the Mac OSX of Linux. OpenDAP doesn't work on it, scipy barely works, and getting matlab libraries to function is so difficult you might as well do it by hand (not really).

You see? It's not the kernel that matters, it's the OS. And in the case of Mac OS-X; it's as worthless as its users.

$2000 for a 13" 120Gig 2GigRam Macbook...
$1000 for a 15.6" 500Gig 4GigRam Windows Laptop
Its quite obvious why macs suck. Oh not to mention the inferior diversity of applications.

Ps. Linux sux's in my view. I write games, 3D apps, databases, plus the normal PC apps. Windows is by far the easiest, cheapest (try finding a Linux expert in a hurry), best resource base, and finally the most numerous client base.

None of my fav games for the PC ever found them self on a mac or Linux. PC gaming has be one of the greatest driving forces for new high speed computing (GPU's) thanks to Microsoft's DirectX.

Mac lovers enjoy your overpriced toy. Linux user enjoy your obscure, app challenged , righteousness.
 
Blindman: app challenged? Just yesterday I was using a Windows machine; I was trying to accomplish two things so I could instructs my colleagues how to accomplish them on a Windows machine..
1. I wanted to create a script which would access gridded binary and perform extrapolation algorithms and then spline interpolations.

2. Compile a python script which would render the resultant 5D gridded binaries in to a batch of PNG output files.

I spent two hours just trying to find all the dependencies for Windows to access gridded binary only to have it consistently throw Buffer overflow and one I/O error after another. I even set it to clear its buffer after n-iterations, which would make it work for longer...but no matter what it persisted to fail.
So I just got on linux and did it...then I wanted to do the second step.

I messed around with the Python library forever only to give up as a result of the funky pyGUI and the even funkier pyConsole.

The end result after three hours was an e-mail which said "You can't."

Finishing the slightly offtopic direction, Google, Myspace, Youtube etc never use just one single database with a chronological job for backing up, they parallel against multiple databases for data integrity. Otherwise it's putting all your eggs in one basket.

Well dont know what you are coding in but Microsoft provide free of charge Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 with C#,C++,VB.

C# is one of the best languages ever created, fully managed, and object orientated. Thanks Microsoft:bravo::bravo:

Buffer overflow and IO errors are your fault :rolleyes:. There are plenty of math libs available that can be found easily (google is your friend) just drag and drop into your project and instant access to the managed com object. Some are free, some have trial periods, and some require purchase.

Thanks Microsoft for free, state of the art, visual development systems. There is nothing better. And thanks to the millions of coders that have provided endless list of component that cover almost any common processing requirement.
 
The OS is basically the same only different wrappers. Those hackers hacked every OS and web browser except for Chrome which had just been updated like a day before the vent.

It may be for another topic all together...but I'm not sure it they would have cracked it anyways. There are security holes in it...but its visualization seems to weed out any codes directly inserted into memory. You have to program an exploit which injects from the memory to the virtual memory and then from the virtual memory to the browser...right? I hear this is not easy...

Yes very true.. They also have lots of money. But there is still no need for any database to have to shut down. I managed a racing system covering all Australian, New Zealand and Hong Kong, trots, horses and dog races that ran for 3 years straight. The only reset was when we lost power in the city for several hours and the UPS batteries ran down.

Window server can provide easy parallel database implementation. I could run a development beta, release main, and release beta. I could switch between databases, and server api's without the users seeing any glitch or slowdown. This included a forum, mailing service, and the all important (https) secure billing system.

Of course we had a small user base (around 15000) all paying monthly. We ran it easily on a single rack mount windows NT box. One reset in 3 years.

What is your point, anyways? That Mac can access GrADS while Windows can't...all after I stated Windows couldn't? That's fine...there's plenty of other nice things Mac can't do.

The criticism I gave of Mac was its insecurity and poorly designed OS Candy WRapper.
