When I die

Neverfly and I have ridden a roller coaster with such strong g force that we both began to lose consciousness in one part of the ride just before it stops half way through only to take off again reaching the same Gs again. It was a strange feeling for me to not be under any sedation yet to see everything going dim because, I'm assuming, the blood was being pulled out of my brain. Then of course when we stop the blood comes rushing back and the lights come back on.

But having been clinically dead before, it's not that spectactular. A quick hallucination before it all goes black and all is peaceful. Kinda like when you sleep really hard and have no recollection of any dreams. Its like you didn't exist rather than having slept well. I am guessing that is what death feels like. Nothing.

That would be my assumption: "A quick hallucination before it all goes black and all is peaceful." We would hope for such a demise. My thought is, what happens when you know you're near the end? Those that I've witnessed were all unconscious.

I posted something stupid as a response to someone only realizing I hadn't read their post correctly. Feel free to delete this.

Ignorance is bliss until a person or society shatters your innocent preconceptions of your world view. For some they see or try to see good in all people. For me I can only see or attempt to see their hidden motives and negative quirks of their personalities without revealing too much of my own. Do genuinely nice, good people exist…yes…but from my experience they are chance encounters in a sea of bullshit. I simply hope your son continues to live with that innocence and experiences less prejudice and discrimination than other Aspies have encountered in the past. Regards - SP

I apologize for asking, but I was curious, and I know that aspies usually have a higher degree of integrity, and therefore, will give a more honest answer. It’s more about expressing the marginalization of an aspie atheist with a dash of strategic defensiveness, right? Are you merely frustrated by their shortcomings or do they generally have to earn your disdain? We all have trouble weeding out our unwanted character traits, albeit some more than others. I’m sure aspies would struggle with tolerance because it requires a great deal of introspection.

Hmm…Let me see if I can play off their “easter egg bit”…:bugeye:

Well, traditionally, the eggs were exchanged and shared, as a symbol of friendship. Stop focusing on their weaknesses. You don’t have to search for the good in people, just their strengths. Everyone has some knowledge, or something interesting to offer, their story, perhaps. Even religion has it's strengths.

We are always imagining ourselves over time, even unto death. I’m going to build a rock walk. So today, I did a little recon to locate rocks that would compliment my surroundings. Oh my god, it was such a beautiful day. The fall colors were amazing and I thought to myself, “When my time comes, I’m really-really going to miss the seasons.” Then it dawned on me, I’m not going to miss a thing. I will no longer exist. So, I hope I have a little to time to reflect or at least enough time for one last thought ---“Life” Wow! That was one hell of an adventure, wasn't it?

Don’t feel bad for asking a question, one cannot learn unless one questions or seeks out answers. Many of my compatriots or friends have traits of strengths that I find valuable or desirable in a person. Some of my associates may not be as well spoken or knowledgeable in my areas of interest but they do make up for it by being entertaining or asking me questions, i enjoy sloving expelling information or answering questions. I’m the human encyclopedia, in my small but close net group and I’m fine with that position and ranking. Many others however are simply too extroverted or rowdy for my taste. ISTJ is my personality type. http://typelogic.com/istj.html Here is some information on ISTJ's

Well, I’m sure you’re well aware of latest controversy regarding the proposal for a new definition, which would create a more stringent criteria for diagnosis. I think that this a great, especially since it’s become so popularized. It may reduce the misconceptions and misdiagnosis. How do you feel about people self-diagnosing? It’s almost like a country song, “I was an aspie before aspies were cool.” I’ve notice a lot of people on science forums claiming to have AS because it’s associated with higher intelligence. Although, it was quite apparent that most of them were not even above average.

If ISTJ is your personality type then do you think it’s a misconception that people with NLD tend to be more introspective than people with Asperger’s?

Introspection vs. introversion…do you think these differences are accurate?

Introspection is interest in one's internal processes (e.g. subjective reactions, personal history, feeling states).

Introversion is disinterest in externals (lack of external input required to feel stimulated).

I’m an introvert but I crave input. I can be very social with the right people. I just don’t like unnecessary input. Many others are too extroverted, rowdy, loud, and way too needy for my taste, as well. However, watching them burn would not be my metaphorical choice.

I think the assumption that aspies are more intelligent is a bad assumption. The thing is, quite often, they seem really really smart. They can have wide vocabularies and be somewhat obsessed with details. And in the subject that interests them most, they seem to know everything. But how often do you meet an aspie that has an interest in a subject that YOU happen to be an expert on? People used to think my son was a genius when it came to dinosaurs. He used to read book after book on the subject and I assumed when he talked to me about it that he knew what he was talking about. Then one day we met a paleontologist at a park. He started rattling off his collection of knowledge only to be repeatedly corrected. He got frustrated. So I told him to start writing down what she was correcting him on and we went over it when we got home. As it turns out he didn't know much of anything. He simply gathered a small amount of data and then from there used his imagination to decide what that data meant. Now he had great ideas, probably some that early paleontologists may have assumed early in the history of the paleontology. But he simply didn't know what he thought he did. He could not seperate what he had read from what he had assumed. Now I am not going to say that that is the case here, with Saturine Pariah or with Spidergoat. They both seem quite knowledgable. They are also older than my son was back then. Maybe it is something that happens as they develop or maybe it was something unique to my son, or he may have some other issues in addition to Aspergers that is yet undiagnosed. I have met one other aspie. His aspergers was so extreme he may have been a stronger(is that the right word) form of autism. But he claimed to know alot about human biology, and after what I had been through with my son, I started double checking his facts. Finding that as smart as he sounded, most of what he said seemed to come right out of his ass. He was older and quite hateful towards people in general. My son on the other hand is quite sweet.

I just think its a bad idea to stereotype aspies. Like the rest of us, they are individuals who have a few things in common.

I don’t believe that it is limited to those of normal or higher intelligence, but the association of genius is out there, and numerous studies lean in this direction. Do you really think that this should be considered a stereotype?

I believe Aspergers is blended with Autism, and is really a type of autism where the person isn't mentally handicapped: which elevates IQ artificially as normal people do suffer from mental handicaps.

This site is interesting read:

I hear plenty of people who have little first hand experience with Aspergers say that higher intelligence and Aspergers go together. Some even say high intelligence and Autism in general. I think too many people watch a movie or maybe meet one person with such a situation and assume that ALL people with Aspergers or Autism are the same. I remember after seeing Rain Man when I was a kid, assuming that all people with Autism could count cards and falling toothpicks.

None of my son's doctors have ever suggested that because he has aspergers he should be expected to display higher intelligence at all. He learns differently. Certain parts of his IQ test would range higher than normal (160+)while other parts would range very low(<60). Making his combined IQ normal. Its more of a difference in where their intelligence lies. At least that is the case with my son.

All areas of his IQ were normal to high (100-160) except for his language comprehension and expression which were less than 60. Having trouble to understand language, the method in which we communicate and thereby passing information to one another, hinders his ability to comprehend the subject matter that he is trying to learn. In areas where language is not absolutely necessary, such as using Blender and gimp to create a 3d cgi game, he excels. He learns the software by trial and error though. Reading tutorials does not work. He does sometimes watch video tutorials with the sound off because the person talking confuses him. He is also an excellent artist in drawing and painting. he is very expressive with non lingual methods of doing so.

Obviously, Saturine Pariah is very good at using language to express himself. Actually I may not have figured out that Saturine Pariah even had Aspergers had he not said so. I know I would have never guessed that Spidergoat was. Oddly enough, people have asked me if I have Aspergers. As far as I know I don't display any Aspergers traits, but who knows. I doubt I can evaluate myself accurately.

but you are right, the association of genius is out there, but it is not necessarily an accurate association. Kinda like an association of promiscuity and a lumbar tattoo. The do not necessarily go together even if popular assumption says that they do.

I consider any inaccurate generalizations to be stereotypes. Your point of view is however as valid as any other.

Edit to add:

I didn't look at your links until after I posted, Sorry about that. Sometimes I think I know everything :p. Usually I am wrong. In regards to the child of the MIT parents, his parents were both very intelligent people and that is likely why the kid was so smart. In my son's case. I have a somewhat high IQ. Not a genius but nothing to be embarrassed about. I doubt I rank as high as most of the people who post here. My IQ was about 145 when I was tested. My son's average IQ was the same. But his father's IQ was 51. I kid you not, 51. He is legally retarded. And all the years I was with him I thought he was just stupid. So my son has average intelligence with Aspergers. That being said, I was reading the anecdotes of the engineers and realized that I do also have some things in common with them. I also think in pictures. I struggle with language sometimes. Though I spend a lot of time making a conscious effort trying to figure out how something I say may be interpreted by others. I don't detect inferences or hints. I take you for what you say, exactly. I have trouble assuming anyone means anything other than what they actually say. I also speak very directly, saying exactly what I mean. I don't imply things usually. I prefer the language of computers and recently started learning about programming. I love it because a computer takes your words as is and follows instructions. They don't assume I am calling them ugly because I want them to move one piece of data to another location in memory. I hate the way humans communicate. Especially women, it seems women tend to speak more in implications rather than being direct. So I have usually maintained friendships with men better than with women. If a woman asks me if she looks fat I will be honest with her. I don't understand why they ask if they just want you to lie. And I don't care to cater to their ego. Maintaining their self esteem is not my job. Men do it sometimes too and I react to them the same way. At least my kids know I won't lie to them. lol. I don't know, do I sound like I have Aspergers to you? I have never been checked for it.

This is very common with aspies. Their narrow focus often excludes the broad array of knowledge that a true expert would have. For instance, they may be obsessed with cameras, but when meeting a photographer, they may only know the model numbers and features of cameras, and not know how to take pictures.

I was obsessed with kayaks and built three of them, but I have still never actually gone kayak camping or taken one out on the ocean.

I feel that the expectation of genius in aspies is unrealistic and puts them under stress when many of them are actually quite average in ability. This happened to me in school. I was great at some very specific things, so the expectation was that I could handle all advanced classes, which was mostly a mistake.

I can't blame you, I am terrified of natural bodies of water. I used to swim in lakes but would always have something bump into me. It freaked me out. The deepest I have ever stepped into the ocean was up to my ankles. There are things that can eat you in that water. I will stick to the sterile disinfected environment of a swimming pool.

I found this online quiz to see if you have Aspergers. I don't know how reliable it is but it could be interesting and fun to see where you may rank.

Aspergers Test

My results... a bit shocked actually,

Your score in the Aspergers AQ Test was 37 . This indicates a high degree of autistic tendencies.

The scores of the AQ test are based on statistical analysis of people with Autism who have taken the test compared with the results of the general population. The following guidelines can be used for interpretation of the score.

11 - 22 is average for the general population.
22 - 31 indicates that one has slightly higher than average autistic traits.
32 + indicates a high degree of autistic tendencies

Please bear in mind that the results of the AQ test are not definitive but can be helpful in the process of self diagnosis. Professional medical advice should be requested following higher test results of 32 or more.

More information about the Aspergers AQ Test can be found here

As you have been identified as potential having a high degree of autistic tendencies, you have been subscribed to a free mini course about Aspergers Syndrome.

I scored 35.

A few years ago, I took a test at Cooijman's Website and one category having strong responses in 9 out of 10 questions seemed very unusual but the rest of the categories seemed to turn out more normal. I am aware that my childhood was very shy and I did have a seizure when I was a toddler.

For various reasons, I'm afraid of death.

I think fear of death is considered normal. I'm going to start a new thread about the aspie stuff because it seems we have gotten off course with the OP.

30, but I didn't like the wording of the questions or the format of the test. I wouldn't take this pop online quiz too seriously...

A short poem by Mason Williams, entitled Death:

You will know me by my touch
It is the last

When i die, i don't want to be there at all - anaesthetic, coma, knocked unconscious by a falling brick or asleep, doesn't matter, just so i get a head start on oblivion.
My brother had a theory that whatever you experience in the last minutes before death is your personal eternity (because there is no 'after' to put in perspective) and i don't want that to be pain, fear, hate, sorrow or anger. Bliss or nothing.

That's my exact fear too, your not my brother are you? :p

I actually had a conversation with mum about wether if this is true its ethical to have a child as you are condemning them to eternal pain simply by being born.
