What the hell happened?

So will there be any explanation, any apology coming forth as to the why and how of this latest disaster down lasting almost 30 hrs? Plus the apparent total wipe-out of all posts after ~ Wed 8:30AM - latest one showing after forum reboot being 8:28AM, here: http://www.sciforums.com/posts/3339290/). No loss for some, maybe quite convenient, to have their entries lost, not for others.

Stuff happens. I give them credit for pasting it back together. Whatever happened, it must have been traumatic if it kept them down so long.

It might be a wake-up call to those foolish enough to put their faith in 'the cloud'.

Okay..

I have PM'ed the owners to try to find out what has happened. I have posted in the backroom as well, to see if maybe someone on staff has an idea.

I have noticed that it is not just posts, but also PM's after that time on Wednesday have disappeared. The site sputtered at one point a few days ago, was unavailable for a period of time, came back up shortly and then went down for close to 30 hours or so. And we also know there was a major roll back, possibly to get the site back to the stable point before whatever it is that happened actually happened. So that may explain the roll back. Speculation, but it is the best I can come up with as a possible explanation.

So, on behalf of the staff, I apologise for any inconvenience and we shall let you know what happened as soon as we find out ourselves.

Thanks for a timely as possible update. So far, ISIS/ISIL/IS/Daesh/(add extra label(s) as needed here) have not claimed responsibility.

on my end i have this message as a header:
Dear SciForums members, As you've noticed SciForums was recently unavailable. The cause for this problem was a hard disk failure on one of our servers. We installed a new disk and we're currently transferring a data backup to the new disk. Unfortunately, topics and posts made during 05/11 and 06/11 couldn't be retrieved. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused by this downtime. Thank you for understanding, SciForums Staff
maybe this will clear up the frivolous whining

Such alarm, I guess you financially donate to this site. Your last sentence...if it's such a life and death matter for you, keep your own copies of everything you post or go esle where. Keep calm it's only a public forum, your posts aren't going to change the scientific world.

Well said!
Unbelievable really how certain people react to certain unavoidable happenings.
:) With regards to posts on a science forum changing the scientific world, I suppose that depends on the depth of delusions of grandeur one would be afflicted with.

You could argue that a few good rebuttals and refutations got lost, but I live in the hope that they'll be repeated.

The down time actually worked in my favour. It gave me time to do a couple of jobs around the house that the Mrs has been nagging at me to do, and paint the feature wall of the mezzanine level of my man cave.:)

Not everyone contributes just bowel evacuations, and that's being reflected in the proportionate sense of loss being expressed. For some reason your buddy, whose avatar has freshly metamorphized, didn't offer you a [hugs] - like finished up happening posts #13-#15 here: http://www.sciforums.com/threads/gravitational-waves-plus-bh-rethink.152909/
Weirdos just keep getting weirder.
And btw, fyi, try to stop and think before rushing in next time - this thread was started well before that banner notice even you couldn't miss.

Does this mean everything will eventually be restored? Otherwise, I can and intend to replace all posts in threads I participated in over that period. But need a reply asap as any new postings those threads will add obvious complications.
[On 2nd thoughts - best I start now, and admin can just overwrite/replace with originals if they are in fact able to do so.]

I think it is so cute that you think that any of your old post are so important that you are going to try and replace them on your own.

And I'm sure you are being so sincere. There is another explanation - trying to help out where I can. By spending precious time and effort that would otherwise be best spent elsewhere.
The effort obviously wasted on some spiteful snipers here.
