Wandering around online

Looks a bit dead, but still pleasant seeing this old pre-social media throwback still exists. I'm wandering around the internet exploring what the "topic oriented discussion" landscape looks like these days (outside of reddit).

Magical Realist, CC, and Yazata seem to be active there. Yazata seems to have become a RW conspiracy theorist, with copious threads where the floors are slick with mouth foam, believers sling phrases like TDS in lieu of reasoned analysis and the rubbery factoids are piled hip deep. MR almost looks like a voice of sanity, over there. Unless my doctor informs me that I need to raise my systolic BP about thirty points, I will probably not register there.

Yes I took a quick look and rapidly came to a similar conclusion.

Yuck. Never mind about Scivillage then.

And yet Sciforums chastened MR for years and finally banned him. Go figure. ;)

But when in Rome... blend in with the bacchanalia.

Stryder is the owner of Scivillage. Purely a recreational, free speech forum -- no moderater. The whole spectrum from left to right -- Rainbow Unicorn once frequented there, for instance (especially at the start of the Russia Ukraine war).

And I guess it's ironically a monument or ongoing demonstration as to why many actually do not want free speech in a literal context. Since everything goes (though not truly -- there's the untold story of Q-reeus going to Scivillage after he got banned here).

One can argue there with MR about UFOs, ghosts, etc -- just as one can argue with Syne about politics. But it's a "you're on your own" situation, since there is no authority to step in, no comforting hand to hold, no treat merchant to offer ice cream and cookies amidst the bogeys.

Syne appears antagonistic because debate and arguing and baiting is his primary purpose for being online.

Otherwise, indifference largely prevails because the regulars know it's a waste of time trying to change anyone's mind (granting that there would be a missionary or crusader's desire to do so, to begin with). I guess that's counter to the bogey side of it -- one could go there to create a scene by plonking down something that would normally raise hackles, and yet contingently not even stir an eyebrow (except again, with respect to a confrontation with Syne).

And Poe's law potentially lurks in many a corner. A slippery art-like illustration of how both left and right can be parodied or poked at, sans even the believers noticing a distinction. Definitely a frightening place -- what's real, and what's an illusion?

That's my paid spiel for it. (Not)

Got it!

He is attacking a lot of stuff including scientific research so..
Unless he's actually someone significant to that research, I think "attacking" is probably being generous. If he's like most other random internet nobodies, they probably have as much to do with the topic as someone watching TV has with the outcome of a ball game lol. Opinions may as well be birds chirping or something.

Sorry I was not clear. I meant Trump, he has cut funding to the NIH and may slash the NSF funding also.
His withdrawal from the WHO equates to 240 million dollars taken away from the upkeep of labs, admin, staff, a lot.

I just don’t recognize the descriptions given in the posts above as referring to Scivillage at all.
I have this shirt in five colours!
To be fair, I just sampled pretty randomly, so my impressions should be taken with a larger chunk of halite. And CC posting there is a point in its favor.

MR was a troll though. I was amazed he survived as long as he did.

The same CC? Right, yes that is a plus.

I thought it would be a Revelation in space, MR, Tony Huan, Axocanth apocalypse.
