Today is Australia Day.

Australia Day is the official national day of Australia. Celebrated annually on 26 January, it marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British Ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales, and raising of the Flag of Great Britain at that site by Governor Arthur Phillip.
It is an opportunity for Australians to come together to celebrate their country and culture.
A country of only 25 million inhabitants in a land mass just slightly smaller the mainland USA,

It is celebrated nation wide in many ways.....BBQs, parades, fireworks, sporting events such as cricket, tennis, and surfing, and an announcement for "Australian of the Year.

As a nation of only 25 million, we do seem to punch well above our weight in many aspects, especially sport.
Of course, there is still some resentment from some indigenous Australians who may see it as "Invasion Day" but even in that respect, many of the past wrongs against our indigenous population are being righted including land rights and other symbolic gestures.

I'm not an Aussie but would like to offer my joy and happiness to all you blokes over there.
 
Something rather uniquely Australian.....
A surf boat race from the many Surf Carnivals along the beaches of Sydney, NSW and Queensland......

 
We've spent the week cleaning up from the extreme weather we have had in the past week and preparing for the severe storms that are forming in the ranges to the west of us, while battling the heat.. Having just cleaned out the gutters again, secured all the outdoor furniture, toys and loose items, stepping into the house for lunch made us want to sob with joy. We thought about throwing some seafood and the obligatory sausages (these are a must if we turn on the BBQ or the eldest and partner sulk because you cannot have one without the other *sigh*) on the BBQ, but it's just too hot.

Thank Christ for air-conditioning. The pool feels like a warm bath at the moment and even the kids are refusing to swim because "it's too hot". Even the dog is refusing to set foot out of the air-conditioned house at the moment. I tried to tempt him outside with the water hose (he adores playing in the water from the hose), but he just sat by the glass doors and looked at me as if I was an idiot to think he would even contemplate stepping outside. So did my kids for that matter.

Neighbours all look to be doing the same..

Yay.. Happy Australia Day!

The biggest cheer where I am from, from all and sundry is YAY SCHOOL GOES BACK TOMORROW!! :D

Sydney was a balmy 23 C, drizzly day all day, which postponed a few times the ODI cricket between Australia and India, had the Bondi beach thong race cancelled, but did nothing to dampen the spirits of most that had BBQ's at home or ventured into the city to watch the ferry races, concerts and many other events.
Fireworks may be a washout tonight, but who knows?

How do you tell the difference between an Australian Police Officer, a Canadian Police Officer, an American Police Officer and a Scottish police officer?
The answer is found below. I just know this question has been on your minds for years!

QUESTION:
You’re a policeman, on duty by yourself. You are walking on a deserted street late at night.
Suddenly, an armed man with a huge knife comes around the corner, locks eyes with you and screaming something that sounds like obscenities, raises the knife and lunges at you.
You are carrying your truncheon and are an expert in using it. However, you have only a split second to react before he reaches you. What do you do?

ANSWER:
Australian Police Officer
Firstly, the Officer must consider the man's human rights.
1) Does the man look poor and/or oppressed?
2) Is he newly arrived in this country and does not yet understand the law?
3) Is this really a knife or a ceremonial dagger?
4) Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack?
5) Am I dressed provocatively?
6) Could I run away?
7) Could I possibly swing my truncheon and knock the knife out of his hand?
8) Should I try and negotiate with him to discuss his wrong-doings?
9) Why am I carrying a truncheon anyway and what kind of message does this send to society?
10) Does he definitely want to kill me or would he be content just to wound me?
11) If I were to grab his knees and hold on, would he still want to stab and kill me?
12) If I raise my truncheon and he turns and runs away, do I get blamed if he falls over, knocks his head and kills himself?
13) If I hurt him and lose the subsequent court case, does he have the opportunity to sue me, cost me my job, my credibility and the loss of my family home?

Canadian Police Officer:

American Police Officer:
