The greatest city in the world????

You see one of the great things about london is it has aspects of other contries incorparated into it, for example weve got little india(south hall), little Istambul(Haringey), Little Marrakesh(Ladbroke grove),Little China(Soho), Little Jamaica(Brixton/tottenham, argueably) ect.ect. Traveling from one side to the other it seems like traveling the world, even the weather seems different in those places. I confess some citys are more pleasing to visit but you have to live in London to experience its true beauty.

Vancouver is a great place as long as you stay out of the East Side.
Huh. I thought the East Side was the fun side. Cosmopolitan, mysterious, up all night. The rest of Vancouver is so orderly, so tidy, so responsible... so Canadian. :)

I'm tied between Prague, Beijing and Montreal. Hmmm Beijing it is! (Simply because I bought 10 beers for £2!)

Vancouver, San Francisco, or Seattle

Marquette, MI is also a great "city"- population 30,000, located on Lake Superior, the largest body of freshwater in the world. Please visit and spend your money, but don't move here ;)

If you're going to rank cities by "greatness", what are the criteria?

Size?
Cost of living?
Availability of recreational activities?
Commerce?
Night life?
Amount of parkland?
Proximity to other places?
Fame of the people who live there?

There are many ways to slice and dice cities.

That sounds about right kind of criteria to rate them in lets rate the cities out of 10 for these factors

For london my opinoin would be

Size : 8/10
Cost of living : 3/10
Availability of recreational activities :10/10
Commerce : 8/10
Night life :10/10
Amount of parkland : 5/10
Proximity to other places : 7/10
Fame of the people who live there :9/10
City fame :10/10
Famous land marks :8/10
Weather :6/10

If any one wants to add anything else to rank at feel free to do so

Wouldn't London be 10/10 for size? It's one of the world's biggest cities.

Anyway...

I'll put in a ranking for Melbourne, Australia:

Size : 7/10
Cost of living : 8/10
Availability of recreational activities :8/10
Commerce : 8/10
Night life : 9/10
Amount of parkland : 9/10
Proximity to other places : 6/10
Fame of the people who live there : 5/10
City fame : 4/10
Famous land marks : 2/10
Weather : 8/10

Weather 6/10, now 8/10. Why? London is notorious for it's rainy days and lately called by some as "pea-souper" fog. There's even a website: londonfog.com (a blank page)?

Average annual rainfall exceeds 2000 mm.
Todays forecast: "Cloudy spells tonight with scattered rain and wintery showers."

Travel advisories state that "although it doesn't rain every day in London, make sure that you bring rain gear."

So far the consensus is for Vancouver.

A recent survey (2005) by the Economist Intelligence Unit lists Vancouver as the world's most desirable place to live, among 127 cities.

Quote from CNN:

Other top-ranking Canadian cities were Toronto, Calgary and Montreal.

Australia also fared well in the survey by the London-based group, with Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Sydney scoring high marks along with Vienna, Austria, and Geneva and Zurich in Switzerland.

The EIU study assessed nearly 40 indicators in five broad categories -- stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.

"In the current global political climate, it is no surprise that the most desirable destinations are those with a lower perceived threat of terrorism," said Jon Copestake, editor of the report.

Joining Port Moresby at the bottom of the list were Algiers, Algeria, and Dhaka, Bangladesh. Karachi, Pakistan, and Lagos, Nigeria, also ranked poorly. The EIU said 10 cities -- all in Asia, Africa or the Middle East -- had aspects of daily life that "present challenges."

By contrast, the EIU said 63 cities fell into the top livability bracket.

"This reflects the fact that many global business centers have a developed infrastructure and widespread availability," the report states. "Still, the overwhelming majority of cities in the top livability range are based in western Europe and North America."

The report said Canada, "with low crime, little threat from instability or terrorism and a highly developed infrastructure," is the most livable destination in the world.

"Although higher crime rates and a greater threat of terror puts U.S. cities below those of Canada, U.S. cities are still among the world's most livable." Cleveland and Pittsburgh had the highest American scores.

Only three cities in eastern Europe fall into this bracket along with 13 cities from Asia, the EUI said."

Hi Fraggle,

Yep, Tab`s right. Pronounced "Mewzo". I could tell you played though. I was just curious. Your nik was bit of a giveaway, also you seem to know your way around music. Neil Young is one of my all time faves. "Out on the weekend" was my door into his music. Never looked back. Went on to cover some of his stuff.

smog, 100 mc donalds, traffic, shit whether - london has it all.

the best city i have been to, or even learnt much about secondhand, is the city of the blue mountains.
it has going for it;
a low population density
immense areas of protected nature
friendly people
no crime to speak of

Oxymoronic: great city. Cities suck.

...LOL! I agree wholeheartedly! Give me the wide open countryside any day of the week. Cities mean lots of people, and people suck giant donkey dicks!
