So, when I was a teenager I had the most incredible dream. I was with a group of other teenagers, and we were listening to a kid playing a guitar. The whole time I was immersed in a feeling of love. It was a feeling that was very powerful but not overwhelming. I awoke with a smile. As opposed to a dream of fear, it was unique and not typical of my dream experiences.

Would the feeling of love be classified as an emotion?

По настоящему нас любят только наши родители, и то, если нам с ними повезло. И дети, у кого они есть, если с ними тоже повезло. И это уже не эмоция, это кровное родство, а кровь, как известно, "не вода".

Unconditional or enduring love is based on duty.

Love wholly grounded in emotion comes and goes; is contingent, provisionary, fickle, unreliable. The person who loves _X_ today can be sick of them one month or three years from now, because the novelty or newness once generating the feeling has dissipated from the overfamiliarity, various frictions, eroding of former conditions, etc.

Parental love is duty when a genuinely functional relationship (the child can't lose the commitment, almost no matter what they do); and is wavering emotion when genuinely dysfunctional ("can't wait for the menace or disappointing burden to either grown up or run off during adolescence").

Я где то слышала выражение: "любовь к другим - это отречение от любви к себе". Действительно - что такое самоотверженность, например? Когда человек жертвует своей жизнью ради других? Это эмоция? Или жизненное кредо? И это несомненно Любовь с большой буквы.
