The Arrogance of Ignorance

Does anybody read before they reply: black and white!
A PhD is only one part of the story..you didn't take into account my suffering as a soldier, my compassion in teaching maladjusted children,my social outlook to other people from different languages and cultures...and the suffering of trying to improve ones intellect whilst supporting a family..
That is experience, knowledge and authority, based on Truth , reality and Love.

I used to work as a Systems Test Engineer in a R&D department of about 80 people. At least half of which were either doing or finished their PhDs. Most of the rest were doing Masters, I've quit twice then been talked into returning weeks/months later(3rd time lucky this time:) ). At least a graduate degree was generally required for employment, but I haven't even finished high school. It was quite funny watching the graduates come in every year after who knows how long at uni to be earning less than half of what I was.
A PhD means nothing IMHO :)

Also I have served in the army seen action , death, misery, tuaught maladjusted kids from poor backrounds, helped with soup kitchens...and had to obtain a PHd whilst trying to support a family........

And I will repeat MYSELF....
I could care less what else you personally have done.
I was not talking about you specifically.

But let's do that...
What I am saying is that those experiences you had (other than schooling) are immensely more valuable than any degree you hold in your hand and wave about like a flag IF you learn from them and use the experiences wisely.

No matter how loudly you yell, "But I have a PhD!!" it will not make me see you in a more positive light.
I judge people based on who they ARE, not how long they went to school.
The experiences you have SHAPE who you are.
The more diverse your live experiences you have had, the more well rounded and interesting you will tend to be.
There ARE (painfully obviously) some exceptions to that.

A PhD does not mean you are intelligent, or inetersting, or wise, or anything else.
I am not saying it makes you LESS of any of those things either.
I am saying it makes no difference either way.

I will judge the person I am talking to, not what pieces of paper they try to beat me into submission with while shouting at me how smart they are.

If you want to prove to people how smart or wise you are, don't tell them, show them.

You haven't convinced me so far.

Arrogance comes in a variety of forms. The arrogance of great wealth, the arrogance of great power, the arrogance of great beauty, and the arrogance of a great master are bearable because they rest on an acknowledged and measurable base. The arrogance of ignorance, however, is unbearable because it is rooted in smug satisfaction with being isolated from the facts of the case. The anti-evolution plank in the platform of Christian fundamentalism, is a classic example of the arrogance of know-nothings.....why do so many arrogant immature people on this forum set themselves up as Gurus?.....where do they get their authority from?DOES ANYONE ELSE ON THIS FORUM FEEL THE SAME WAY AS I DO?

see how far you have come away wih the archetypal question....It had nothing to do with PhD.,

QUOTE;If you want to prove to people how smart or wise you are, don't tell them, show them. ...IF THE PEOPLE ARE DEAF AND BLIND....and suffer from pride and vanity.....all you get in a discussion is a paradox...

quote: could care less what else you personally have done. ..that is a contradiction of terms..especially after talking about experience being so vital...and you had the cheek to say that English was not my language...see arrogance and ignorance...

I do not want this thread to end up a pissing contest....get your facts straight before you reply and try to get back to the original question....honi soit qui mal y pense...please add a bit of joie de vivre and enlightenment in your thought!
:)

hello James,

Metaphysics , Ontology linked to alternative medicine...
some people do not realize the hard work involved with breaking new ground....humility is one thing..making the blind see and deaf hear is hard work:)

...pride and vanity
Well you know about pride and vanity!

Actually, what do you know about these things? What are your thoughts on pride and vanity as sins? (Sorry to give you another question when there is one on the previous post.)

An a side note, you keep repeating yourself on this thread. Are you trying to tell us you have something important to say? if so, I'd like to hear it.

Also you never answered my question about when you looked after your parents. When was this please?

It is said that ignorance is bliss

I say:-

Ignorance is the foundation for arrogance.

Why?

BECAUSE I BLOODY WELL SAID SO ------ ARE YOU DEAF????

..................................AND I'VE GOT A DhP in Dyslexia

Thats a thought!

Why is dyslexia so hard to spell???

Person 1: someone who has spent their entire life in the lap of luxury, had faced no finacial hardships, no emotional tragedies to speak of and never ventured outside their own pampered lifestyle into the lives and worlds of other cultures, lifestyles and difficulties.
Everything they have learned comes from books, lectures and teachers that TELL them what the world is about.
He earns his PhD in whatever dicipline (doesn't matter) and retires at age 60 to float in his pool in the backyard till he dies.

Person 2: 26 years old. Grew up poor on the street. Decides NOT to go to college. Reads all the same books as our PhD up there, plus many books on OTHER subjects. Packs a bag to hitchhike across Europe and learn about different cultures first hand. Meets many different people from many different walks of life and cultures. Lives in different difficult situations. Spends a few nights in jail here and there.

Who has had richer life experiences?
Who (if both are equally intelligent and open minded) is more wise?
Who is more apt to handle different situations in life and adapt?

If you think the PhD has had more valuable character building experiences and gained more wisdom and insight into life then I think YOU are the deluded and arrogant one.

A university degree proves only ONE thing.
You went to a University.

So which of the two "wise" people you describe above would you elect to become a leader of your country.

a) The elder studious person....or

b) The young criminal nomad

And the ignorance of morality, such as those who say confidently "race doesn't exist" while basing their entity pity politics upon race...

thanx stu.......eloquently put.....

bill clinton cigar,
Pride is based on intellectual negative thought patterns which has in it falsehoods , and non sequiter
Vanity is based on negative emotional thought patterns ..which will also include hate......therefore a person who is suffers from pride is deaf and a person who suffers from vanity is blind...make the blind see and the deaf hear is almost impossible ,
the trouble is deaf and blind people create more deaf and blind people....

Only me! I've been away for a bit.

See this thread has "developed".

Now to see what I can see.

There you go again arrogance.....I did a PhD in Philosophy..and as far as religion is concerned I AM AN AUTHORTY IN MY COUNTRY....so therfore again you are quoting falsehood , deception nonsequiter through your arrogance and ignorance....
What, you did a PhD in Philosophy, what about that Metaphysics one?? If you had bothered to quote me fully except only reading half of it you would have noticed the "Okay then, if eductaion means so much to you I guess I could be more knowledgable". I was trying to proof that your way of thinking is downright moronic.

arrogance and ignorance are based on pride , false intellectual thought patterns , and vanity negative emotional thought patterns which tally's up with your short life of suffering.... think before you speak.....
Don't preach what you don't do. I guess you rarely think before you spurt out all this verbal diarrhoea.

Its not power I am talking about its arrogance and ignorance and where do they get their authority from?
I wander what the hell your definition of authority is. You're not proving to be a very smart customer.

Snippet of the definition of authority - Power assigned to another; authorization

Many threads are spoilt because people come in with their innane comments and then of course the thread deteriorates through the archetypal battle of pride......no side gives way.......
There's a difference in between pride and being right. I'm one and you're the other, guess which ones which.

and maybe you would like to tell Thor how hard taking a PhD IS...TO HIM BECAUSE HE LIVES IN A WORLD OF FALSEHOOD JUST CALLS IT A BIT OF PAPER.....see arrogance and ignorance
I don't give a flying f*ck about your PhD, it doesn't make you any better than anyone else. Education makes no-one superior. Do us all a favour and go back to the middle-age social heirarchy you seem to pine for. The so called "World of Falsehood".

Onother falsehood non sequiter......I have experienced all of these:a bag to hitchhike across Europe and learn about different cultures first hand. Met many different people from many different walks of life and cultures. Lived in different difficult situations.
Okay, if this is your main arguement, how about this? I was born ad spent my early years in Germany. I moved around that country and experienced it's many cultures at an age where it qwould be a huge influence. I moved to England when I was a little older and also have moved around. I have a huge cultural outlook compared to many people my age. I have loved, I have hated. I've known fear and saftey, happiness and sorrow. I have experienced hardship but almost never luxury. How dare you say I am not experienced in life. You are the arrogant one here who has built up this world of fantasy where he is always right. Welcome to my world of reality buddy.

and had to obtain a PHd whilst trying to support a family
I am single handedly trying to put myself through college, no help from parents, peers or anyone...well, except lodging. But hey, can't have everything bad.

But we're not talking about ourselves and our experiences. It's about you and your ignorance to your own arrogance.

Does anybody read before they reply: black and white!
Yes, everyone except the thread starter.

see how far you have come away wih the archetypal question....It had nothing to do with PhD.,
You brought it up first, not us.

therefore a person who is suffers from pride is deaf and a person who suffers from vanity is blind.
Well then open your eyes and start listening!

You complain about how people think they are an "authority" and then critise someones character purely based on age alone. Then you go about thinking you're an authority because you've experienced 'stuff' and is reasonablly educated. You want arrogance to stop, then stop being arrogant towards others then it may do. You're an extremely hypocritical person. If I didn't know any better I'd say you were religious because that's what this reminds me of, a 'debate' with a religious person who cannot accept truth in fact.

You deny me my right to speak my mind because of my age? Who the hell do you think you are? You and your single minded views shouldn't be tolerated in a civilised society such as our own, I use the word civilised loosly.

If age and, I'm gonna say it again, a piece of paper makes you feel big, then go ahead. You'll not get any respect from me nor from a lot of people for you have most definatly proven age does not bring wisdom.

I would have thought that the majority of posts here would have pointed that out but you are blind, to blind to see

Edit to add: Got the reply to the PM, replying now

Interesting subject, but what was the title of your paper? What did you investigate in this field of metaphysics, what was your statement?

Being a PhD, you must have published somewhere. Perhaps, we can find some of your work online?

saying the arrogance of ignorance does not technically make sense because the minute you look at it you realize that they are two sides of the same coin.
