Taliban's opposition, the Northern Alliance

The Northern Alliance...who are these people? Do we want them on our side?

The questions have been bothering me lately. If we allow them to take control, will they bring more misery to the country or will they make improvement? Once this is over, will they then split back into warring camps? I'm wondering if anyone is planing for the future stability of Afghanistan?

Russia is willing to help the group take over the talibans. But as soon as that happens, USA will throw a money wrench, because we do not want the russians to get the upper hand. So stability? forget it....

Unless there is a deal made between Russia and USA beforehand.

Didn't read this before posting elsewhere.

The Northern Alliance is a loose (very loose) grouping of several ethnic Tajik, Uzbeki and Afghan tribes, quite different from those in the rest of Afghanistan. They are largely Shi'a Muslims (Taliban are Sunni), and less extreme than the Taliban, but with no love of the US.

I do not think the group can form an effective government of any sort. If the US attempted to put this group in power, it would immediately arouse opposition. The new government would also almost certainly degenerate into internecine conflict itself.

At least, those are my opinions.

I do not think so. The NA is now being supported by the Russians. As long as others are involved, they will be less hostile to us.

I'm not so sure that that would be true, we helped the Afghans against the Russians in the '80's & the Kuwaitis against the Iraqis in the '90's. Both attempts came back to haunt us, because bin Laden took offense at American troops in Saudi Arabia and he received military training in the Afghan War (which didn't help us, because those we helped did not survive the Taliban, & Pakistan was sanctioned soon thereafter because they developed the 'bomb' against India). We can't pick any sides there, unless we get worldwide Islamic scholars & clerics, giving the US a 'fatwah' against bin Laden, & American muslim soldiers defend Saudi Arabia & Kuwait. And American muslim clerics will need to declare Jihad, so that we can fight against the US's Islamic enemies, like Iraq, Libya & Afghanistan. We can easily blow any goodwill & support from Islamic countries if we make any mis-steps. Israel supposedly was hailed as a liberator by the Shi'a muslims of southern Lebanon, after they pushed the Palestinians out of that country in the '80's. But since the Israelis would not treat them fairly, & occupied them just as bad as the Palestinians had, the Hezbollah was born. Let us learn from others mistakes! Or we are bound to repeat them, ad infinitum....

We will continue to repeat them every four years anyway....are you saying that the Democrats will learn from the Republicans and vice versa?

What planet are you from? I want to move in there.

The northern alliance are every bit as bad as the Taliban. The fact that they're being considered as potential allies shows how little America cares for the rst of the world, and now reluctant they are to learn from history.

There was suggestion from their side that, when the war ends, a UN force should be placed in Kabul, for the purpose of adding stability to the interim government. I think the advantage of the Northern alliance is the fact that it IS composed of many groups and not just one--unlike the Taliban. There is, I think, an advantage there for creating a more moderate government, providing that no one part is given the opportunity to rule over the other parts. The future of Afghanistan, the future stability of that country, depends on their acceptance of mutual consent for and equal representation within any future government.

It can be done. Whoever comes to power will have to keep peace with all the border countries. The key countries being Pakisatn, Uzbekistan, Iran and China. Iran has good relationship with UK. So they can come to the table. US is working with all the other countries.

So, it is doable.

They need to unify the factions under a common heritage, something that all can rally around. I agree. Those border countries will either contribute to its stability or its instability. I would think that a unified Afghanistan would bring more stability to the region, but who knows what threats or disadvantages her neighbors might see with that idea.
