Suddenly, only members can view images within posts. Why?

This so called forum is a fraud...

So, all of a sudden, you have to be logged in to view images within posts.

1. Why was this done?
2. Please put it back the way it was.

Thanks,

If I had to guess, this probably occurred as a result of the changeover to the new forum software several months ago, and is only now being discovered - I am not aware of any recent changes to the forum settings (though I do not claim to know of all the goings-on on the back-end of the forum)

So, now that it has been discovered, will it be put back the way it was?

That I couldn't tell you - if my hunch is correct, and it is because of the change in forum software, it may not even be a setting that can be changed; even if it is one that can be configured, I believe only James R or Plazma Inferno would have access to do so (moderators and super mods can't make changes to those types of settings)

No Kitt, it's new - in the past couple of days. It now says something to the effect of "Please login or register to see the hidden message". I "lurk" all the time and just noticed it a day or two ago...

I figured it was a Plazma thing, along with the many, many, many threads he's starting as of late - presumably in an attempt to drive up views and / or membership. Who wouldn't want to register to see that "hidden message"? :)

Ah, thanks for the 411 Randwolf.

Can you ask them?

Thanks.

I'll pass the message along!

The "Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!" message isn't limited to replacing images - I don't even know for sure that it correlates with images at all. That was an assumption on my part based on the coincidental timing of Futilitist's inquiry. Whatever it is, it's new - within a few days.

I post a lot of charts and graphs. They are no longer visible to the general public. That feels like censorship.

" only members can view images within posts "
whom cares-- why are whining about such frivolous things.
:) (shakes head)

Maybe it's to save bandwidth on the server.
Is that a joke James? Lost count of how many times I've pointed out the irresponsibility of habitually posting full reproductions of web-pages - including high-bandwidth large high resolution graphics - by one chronic poster in particular. Cut that sort of thing out, and the need for OP here would surely vanish. Unless there is indeed a change in strategy. If so it would be nice to be informed of that.

It can cut hotlinking, which can save significant bandwidth, but I don't know how many people are pulling from Sciforums in the first place.

I've generally tried to stop hotlinking from various source sites, and try to use remote storage such as WordPress and Google/Picasa. Hell, give me that much storage―all of three gigs per blog at WordPress, but in five years of one blog I've used six percent of my storage, and over eight years at another has consumed two percent―and I pretty much don't have an excuse to hotlink.

I want to post a link but now I can't, what's the problem this time? When I left click to post all it says is inspect element.

*tilt* inspect element...? in the right click context menu? This is what I see:
