Florian Fricke's work (as Popol Vuh) for Herzog's films was consistently excellent. It's hard to pick a favorite, but this--from Nosferatu: The Vampyre--is sublime:

Herzog also used Wagner's Prelude to Das Rheingold--

--in Nosferatu, and the fact that that was Wagner's only drone piece seriously brings his alleged "genius" into question.

Colin Stetson's remarkably similar, yet somehow not derivative (unlike most of John William's work--sorry!), soundtrack to Hereditary is also great:

I'm cheating a bit here, I am thinking about the great films I have seen then checking the music.

I don't think it counts because a musical is much of songs bound by a story.
A film is a story with some music running through it.

Have you seen the original "CATS"? It's T. S. Eliot's https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Possum's_Book_of_Practical_Cats with a different school of dance for each song. Some folks were confused, thinking it was supposed to be ... I have no idea what they thought they were going to see.
